UNIT OUTCOMES:

At the end of this unit, the student should be able to:

1. Perform the proper handwashing, soiled glove removal and proper


donning and doffing of PPE
I. Hand Hygiene
1. Handwashing and use of Alcohol-Based
Sanitizers

2. Alcohol-based sanitizers are for when


your hands are not visibly contaminated

-Spread sanitizer over cleansing area


-Rub space between fingers
-Continue until alcohol runs dry

I. Hand Hygiene
1. Handwashing:

a) Antimicrobial Soap
b) Paper Towels
c) Running Water
d) Waste Container

Note:
Remove any jewelry in the hands, wrists,

Handwashing:

1. Stand a few inches in front of the sink


2. Turn on faucet; place hands in running
water
3. Use soap and work up lather
4. Scrub for at least 15 seconds. Make
sure all surfaces are scrubbed, esp. in-
between fingers and knuckles

Handwashing:

5. Rinse hands from the wrist downward


to fingertips

6. Dry hands using paper towel

7. Use paper towel to close faucet

II. Soiled Glove Removal
Proper Removal of Gloves:
1. The wrist part of one glove is
grasped by the opposite hand

2. The glove is pulled inside-out and


off the hand

Proper Removal of Gloves:
3. The removed glove is placed in the
gloved hand.

The fingers of the non-gloved hand are


slipped under the wrist of the remaining
glove; do not touch the exterior surface

II. Soiled Glove Removal
Proper Removal of Gloves:
4. The second glove is pulled out

5. The gloves must be thrown in the


appropriate waste container

III. Donning and Doffing of PPE
Donning of PPE
1. Gown should be worn first

2. Mask should be worn next.

3. Gloves should be worn last.

Note:
Goggles, Respirators, Face Shields are worn after the mask, but before
the gloves. Gloves are always worn last.

III. Donning and Doffing of PPE
Doffing of PPE
1. Gloves should be removed first

2. Gown should be removed next. Gown should be removed


from the shoulders toward the hand.

3. Mask should be removed last. Remove the mask by


holding only the string.
Note:
Goggles, Respirators, Face Shields are removed after the gloves.
