iction between layers of a liquid which resist the flow of liquid is known as viscosity. The
to measure viscosity is called viscometer. Ostwald’s viscometer is a simple instrument
‘An appropriate and known volume of the liquid under study is allowed to flow through the eapiliary and
the time of flow (f,) from mark D to E is noted. The viscometer is then cleaned and dried. The experiment
is then repeated with an exactly the same volume of reference liquid (usually water) and the time taken
for flow (1,) from D to Eis noted. If n, and n, are the viscosities of the two liquids respectively, we have
we f4
REQUIREMENT
Ostwald Viscometer, stop watch, specific gravity bottle or pyknometer (or R D bottle), distill water,

PROCEDURE
1. Clean the viscometer and other glassware with chromic acid and then wash thoroughly with
distilled water.
2, Take the weight of empty specific gravity (sp. gr) bottle & then fill it with distilled water and
take weight of filled sp. gr. bottle (with stopper). Now empty it and dry it in an oven. Afterwaris
fll the bottle with experimental liquid and weigh the sp, gr. bottle. Use the data for measuring
the densities.
3. Fix the viscometer vertically on the stand,
4. Introduce @ known volume of given liquid through arm F into the larger bulb A.
5. Suck the liquid into the bulb B with the help of rubber tube attached at the end C to a level above
the upper mark D.
6, Allow the liquid to flow freely through the capillary and note the time taken by it in flowing from
‘upper mark D to lower mark E.
7. Repeat the procedure with distill water and other experimental liquids

PRECAUTIONS
1. Glass apparatus should be perfectly cleaned before taking observationtions,
2. Four or five readings of time should be recorded with water and the liquid,
3. Viscometer should stand vertically straight,
Density of water at 25° = 0.99708 giml
