Inflation: India’s Wholesale Price Inflation (WPI) Index came in at 4.73% YoY during the current month as compared to 4.95% for the previous month on account of high fuel, food and commodity prices.
CPI inflation stood at 6.52% (5.72%). Inflation is expected to moderate gradually in 2HFY23E.
Growth:
India’s real GDP (at market prices) grew by 4.4% YoY in the December-22 quarter (Q3FY23) and by 9.1% YoY in FY22 – revised up from 8.7% for the year. Capital formation growth stood at 8.3% for Q3FY23. Going
forward, consensus expects a 6.8% to 7% GDP growth for FY23.
Other macro developments (fiscal deficit and household savings)
India’s Q1FY23 current account balance registered a deficit of US$ 23.9bn (2.8% of GDP) from a deficit of US$13.5bn (1.5% of GDP) in Q4FY22. The deficit represents widening of the trade deficit, as imports pick-up
with revival in domestic demand and higher crude price.
India’s fiscal deficit was kept in check at 6.7% in FY2022 with higher-than-estimated tax revenues. FY23 deficit is expected at around 6.8%.
FY22 net household financial savings rate stood at 8.3% of GDP. The same ratio had moved higher during the pandemic period to 12% in FY21 compared to 7.7% in FY20.
Market Outlook
Over the past few months some segments of corporate India specially consumer discretionary has been reporting slower growth. Within discretionary it is interesting to note that premium/luxury goods continue to grow
at a fast pace whereas affordable category segment is showing some signs of demand moderation. These are early days and one can’t form an opinion based on purely a couple of months data.
High frequency monthly indicators on India continue to suggest growth momentum on the positive side with power demand for January 2023 rising by 13%. Credit growth for Banking sector at 16.7% – our channel
checks on banks remain positive across data parameters like growth, mix, margins, credit cost etc. Government capital spending year to date is up 25% compared to same period last year. Ecommerce and Retail spend
by consumer is up 22% for Q3FY23. Demand for work with the government rural employment scheme (MNREGA) is down 30% yoy on a 3 month moving average basis suggesting better job prospects available for labor
in India. Tractor sales hovering near 5 year highs with healthy double digit growth. All industrial/capital goods companies in the listed space are full with order books and are seeing new order pipeline being robust
indicating healthy capex growth going forward. Residential real estate ready inventory in top 10 cities in India is at a multi-year low closer to 12 months prompting developers to launch new projects which in turn will
lead to construction activity increasing going ahead. On the other hand, certain select data points have weakened a bit like IT sector hiring on the back of global growth slowdown has plateaued with salary levels
stagnating.
On balance we believe demand environment in the economy remains robust with healthy outlook going forward.
We in our portfolios are focused on companies which can grow earnings at a fast pace and most importantly balance sheets/cash flow being on the positive side with less leverage.
Long-term structural drivers like demographic advantage, low household debt, limited penetration across different consumer categories, increased potential for financial savings and urbanization makes India a compelling
equity story from medium to long term perspective.
We believe investors would be well advised to invest with medium to long term perspective and systematically increase exposure to Indian equity markets.

Bond markets traded with a negative bias due to domestic and global factors. US non-farm payroll for the month of January came at 5,17,000 against market expectations of 1,87,000. US CPI inflation for the month of
January was 6.4 % versus expectation of 6.2 % spooked global markets. US ten-year yields moved towards 4 % levels. The US market is now pricing a full 100 basis point of rate hike with terminal fed fund rates at
5.75 % levels and Fed fund rates staying higher for longer in the current calendar year. The 2 year US yields moved to 5 % as many Federal Reserve voting committee members stuck to their hawkish tones of solely
focusing on bringing US CPI Inflation to 2 % levels. The chance of a fifty basis points hike in the next policy meeting has increased to 30 % levels from 10 % levels last month.
In domestic markets, we had hawkish comments from RBI after its monetary policy meeting on 8th February 2023 .For the next financial year, RBI in its monetary policy guided GDP growth at 6.4 % and average CPI
inflation at 5.3 % . Most market participants excepted this could be the last policy rate hike in the current hiking cycle but RBI stuck to its stance of withdrawal of accommodation and indicated more hikes may be required.
CPI inflation for the month of January 2023 was higher at 6.52 % versus market expectation of 6.2 %. Cereals prices increased by 16.2 % and pulses increased by 21 % on a y-o-y basis, milk and egg prices increasing
by 8.80 % on y-o-y basis
Domestic Yields increased by 5 to 20 basis points across the yield curve as the market priced two more rate hikes by RBI in its April and June monetary policy. The short end of the yield curve was the most affected.
The three months CD rates moving up by 39 basis points and one year CD rates moving up by 15 basis points. The 3 year AAA PSU yields moved up by 20 to 25 basis points due to heavy positioning of the players in
this segment. G sec yields in the 3 to 5 segment moved up by 20 to 25 basis points. Debt market players unwound their positions in this segment which was built on expectation of terminal repo rates of 6.50 % in this
cycle.
Indian Government securities and Corporate bond yields have become inverted as the one year Certificate of Deposit is at 7.90, 3 year PSU bonds yields at 7.85 – 7.90 % levels and the 10 year PSU bonds yields trading
at 7.65 % levels. In the Government securities market, 4 year G sec yields to 10 year Government securities is trading in the band of 7.38 % to 7.43 % and the 30 year yields are trading in the band of 7.38 – 7.40 %
levels. US yields are now trading at historical inversion levels with the 2 year at 5 % levels and the ten year yields at 4 % levels. However, data flows in the US is strong with retail sales increasing by 3 % versus market
expectation of 1.8 %. The unemployment rate is at a 50 year low of 3.4 %.
Domestic Liquidity conditions continue to be in deficit with RBI doing repo of 14 days to inject liquidity into the markets. RBI has been buying dollars which has led to some easing of liquidity but there is reversal of long
term repo injection of Rs 75000 crores during pandemic times done by RBI. This Long Term Repo will mature in March and April 2023. GST collection for the month has been Rs 1.50 Lakh crores. The Government is
keeping a tight leash on its expenditures. The shortfall in divestment and increase in subsidies is expected to be funded for the current year by issuing Rs 50000 Crores of T bills in the month of March . This is expected
to keep liquid tight in the month of March 2023 .
US non-farm payroll and CPI inflation for February 2023 could decide the trajectory of rates movement in the current month. Indian CPI inflation is also expected to around 6 % levels but food inflation is expected to come
down in the coming month due to fall in onion and other vegetable prices. Wheat prices are expected to come below MSP price of Rs 21.15 per kg in Gujarat and other states due to new arrivals of wheat. The price of
one kg of wheat was Rs 30 last year and was trading in the range of Rs 27 -28 till two months back. The Indian bond markets is expected to trade range bound during this month as there is no supply of government
securities. Corporate bond yield and state government securities yields are expected to move up due to supply considerations and year end redemptions pressures in mutual funds.

• The Std. Dev., Sharpe Ratio, Jensen’s Alpha, Treynor, Portfolio Beta & R-squared are based on one month return calculated using last 3 years data.
• Price/Earning Ratio, Price/Book Value Ratio, are based on the historical earnings and accounting numbers, and have been computed only for the invested portion of the portfolio.
• Portfolio turnover has been computed as the ratio of the lower value of average purchase and average sales to the average net assets in the past one year (For schemes that have not completed one year, since
inception is considered)
• Cash & Cash Equivalents includes CBLO, REPO, Fixed Deposits and Cash & Bank Balance.
$-ICRA’s mutual fund rating methodology is based on evaluating the inherent credit quality of the fund’s portfolio. As a measure of the credit quality of a debt fund’s assets. ICRA uses the concept of ‘credit
scores’. These scores are based on ICRA’s estimates of credit risk associated with each exposure of the portfolio taking into account its maturity. To quantify the credit risk scores, ICRA uses its database
of historical default rates for various rating categories for various maturity buckets. The credit risk ratings incorporate ICRA’s assessment of a debt fund’s published investment objectives and policies, its
management characteristics, and the creditworthiness of its investment portfolio. ICRA reviews relevant fund information on an ongoing basis to support its published rating opinions. If the portfolio credit
score meets the benchmark of the assigned rating during the review, the rating is retained. In an event that the benchmark credit score is breached, ICRA gives a month’s time to the debt fund manager to
bring the portfolio credit score within the benchmark credit score. If the debt fund manager is able to reduce the portfolio credit score within the benchmark credit score, the rating is retained. If the portfolio
still continues to breach the benchmark credit score, the rating is revised to reflect the change in credit quality.

Application Amount for Fresh Subscription: This is the minimum investment amount for a new investor in a mutual fund scheme.
Minimum Additional Amount: This is the minimum investment amount for an existing investor in a mutual fund scheme.
Yield to Maturity: The Yield to Maturity or the YTM is the rate of return anticipated on a bond if held until maturity. YTM is expressed as an annual rate. The YTM
factors in the bond’s current market price, par value, coupon interest rate and time to maturity.
SIP: SIP or systematic investment plan works on the principle of making periodic investments of a fixed sum. It works similar to a recurring bank deposit. For
instance, an investor may opt for an SIP that invests Rs 500 every 15th of the month in an equity fund for a period of three years.
NAV: The NAV or the net asset value is the total asset value per unit of the mutual fund after deducting all related and permissible expenses. The NAV is calculated
at the end of every business day. It is the value at which the investor enters or exits the mutual fund.
Benchmark: A group of securities, usually a market index, whose performance is used as a standard or benchmark to measure investment performance of mutual
funds, among other investments. Some typical benchmarks include the Nifty, Sensex, BSE200, BSE500, 10-Year Gsec.
Entry Load: A mutual fund may have a sales charge or load at the time of entry and/or exit to compensate the distributor/agent.
Entry load is charged at the time an investor purchases the units of a mutual fund. The entry load is added to the prevailing NAV at the time of investment. For
instance, if the NAV is Rs. 100 and the entry load is 1%, the investor will enter the fund at Rs 101.
Exit Load: Exit load is charged at the time an investor redeems the units of a mutual fund. The exit load is reduced from the prevailing NAV at the time of redemption
The investor will receive redemption proceeds at net value of NAV less Exit Load. For instance, if the NAV is Rs 100 and the exit load is 1%, the investor will receive
Rs 99.
Modified Duration: Modified duration is the price sensitivity and the percentage change in price for a unit change in yield.
Standard Deviation: Standard deviation is a statistical measure of the range of an investment’s performance. When a mutual fund has a high standard deviation,
its means its range of performance is wide, implying greater volatility.
Sharpe Ratio: The Sharpe Ratio, named after its founder, the Nobel Laureate William Sharpe, is a measure of risk-adjusted returns. It is calculated using standard
deviation and excess return to determine reward per unit of risk.
Beta: Beta is a measure of an investment’s volatility vis-à-vis the market. Beta of less than 1 means that the security will be less volatile than the market. A beta
of greater than 1 implies that the security’s price will be more volatile than the market.
AUM: AUM or assets under management refers to the recent / updated cumulative market value of investments managed by a mutual fund or any investment firm.
Holdings: The holdings or the portfolio is a mutual fund’s latest or updated reported statement of investments/securities. These are usually displayed in terms of
percentage to net assets or the rupee value or both. The objective is to give investors an idea of where their money is being invested by the fund manager.
Nature of Scheme: The investment objective and underlying investments determine the nature of the mutual fund scheme. For instance, a mutual fund that aims at
generating capital appreciation by investing in stock markets is an equity fund or growth fund. Likewise, a mutual fund that aims at capital preservation by investing
in debt markets is a debt fund or income fund. Each of these categories may have sub-categories.
Rating Profile: Mutual funds invest in securities after evaluating their creditworthiness as disclosed by the ratings. A depiction of the mutual fund in various
investments based on their ratings becomes the rating profile of the fund. Typically, this is a feature of debt funds.
R-Squared: R-squared measures the relationship between a portfolio and its benchmark. It is simply a measure of the correlation of the portfolio’s returns to the
benchmark’s returns.
Treynor Ratio: Treynor Ratio is a measurement of efficiency utilizing the relationship between annualized risk-adjusted return and risk. Unlike Sharpe Ratio, Treynor
Ratio utilizes “market” risk (beta) instead of tatal risk (standard deviation).
Jensen Alpha: A measure of the difference between a fund’s actual returns and its expected performance, given its level of risk as measured by beta. Jensen’s
Alpha is equivalent to the alpha derived from regressing the same or portfolio’s returns in excess of the risk free rate against the market return in excess of the
risk free rate.
