This chapter contains expanded explanations on a number of topics that may be of interest
to customers without previous Xerox exposure. Review this section before discussing Xerox
imaging and workflow solutions with your customers.
The essential nature of print is changing. Jobs are more complex, more urgent, more personal,
and they are printed more frequently. Printers need to produce many more short run jobs, and
those jobs are often complex. It all adds up to the need to process many more jobs in a day.
In-Plant shops must also do more with less; more job complexity, more volume, and more
personalization—but with limited budgets and fewer staff. Your customers have to do more.
This adds pressure on everyone throughout the print process, from the salespeople who bring
in the volume, to the operators who produce the jobs.
Xerox answers these challenges with the Versant 4100. The Versant 4100 is the latest
member of the Versant family of presses from Xerox, and has been engineered to help our
clients meet the challenges of a rapidly changing industry. This press is the successor to the
Versant 2100, the most highly regarded, award-winning platform in its class. The Versant
4100 now extends those capabilities in versatility and time-saving automated features.
In developing the Versant product line, Xerox has carefully monitored the needs of our
customers. The Versant 2100 and 3100 introduced improvements in speed, performance,
and press productivity. And now the Versant 4100 extends that value by providing enhanced
the automated tools to enhance operator and press productivity. The new PredictPrint Media
Manager empowers operators to quickly and accurately use a handheld scanner and on-
screen Wizard to program trays with specific stock properties, perform print engine
adjustments to optimize print performance, and complete Calibration and Profiling for the
stock to maximize image quality and color output. This is all initiated by simply scanning a
Versant delivers high-end press capabilities at a mid-level price point. The Versant presses are
not just refreshed products — they represent a significant engineering investment by Xerox.
Versant shows Xerox’s commitment to maintaining leadership in cut sheet printing.
The Versant 4100 is designed to help print businesses grow—in competitive differentiation,
into new markets, and in response to increasing customer demands for superb results, every
time. With the Versant 4100, Xerox clients get more automated features, so they can do
more. From press maintenance to job delivery, the Versant 4100 is designed to deliver class-
leading performance for in-plant, commercial, and on-demand print shops. The Versant 4100
delivers a consistent Average Monthly Print Volume (AMPV) of between 75,000 to 250,000
prints. The Duty Cycle of the Versant 4100 is 1.2 million images.
Duty cycle is the press’s rated capacity to continuously perform work under normal conditions.
Think of it as sustainable volume that can be printed per month—as opposed to AMPV, which
represents typical volume. For the Versant 4100 and Versant 280, Xerox performed an
analytical study of their predecessor products to determine the actual duty cycle capability.
We found our customers were able to run these products at volumes well above what we
identified in the Versant 180 and Versant 3100 specification sheets. If your clients’ primary
objective is higher production, then the Versant 4100 is their best choice.
The Need
“My customers want the look of offset
printing, but we need the economies
of digital printing.”
Background
We hear this regularly from our
customers, and the drive toward
offset-like quality is matter of ongoing, continuous improvement at Xerox. The offset look is
widely regarded as the Holy Grail of print quality in a digital printing press. There are many
aspects to achieving an offset-like look, and chief among them is the matte finish that offset
Xerox Emulsion Xerox’s EA Toner is a superb toner with exceptionally small, uniform particles
Aggregation that improve the rendering of fine lines and overall image quality. This means
(EA) that pages print more easily, using less ink than with other types of toners. Most
Toner important, EA Toner uses no fuser oil. Like all oils, fuser oil is both slippery and
shiny, and removing it from the imaging process helps to reduce the “shininess”
of the printed piece, as well as the buildup of toner in the press over time. A low
gloss finish is thus achieved, with less waste. This remarkable EA Toner is
optimized for use across the Versant family of presses, and the toner used in the
Versant 4100 is identical to the toner used in the Versant 180.
Compact Belt The Versant 4100 also makes use of the Xerox Compact Belt Fuser, which aids in
Fuser the production of an offset-like finish for stocks that range in weight all the way
up to 400 gsm. The Compact Belt fuser provides uniform heat and pressure to
the page, which means that a large variety of stocks can be printed using less
heat than traditional roll fusers. Less heat means less toner gloss and better
media handling at higher speeds. This is the same exceptional fuser that is used
in the Versant 180.
The compact belt fuser is also designed for exceptionally long life, with a
460,000-page duty cycle—the best in its class. That means the Versant 4100
is well suited to take on high-volume, short-run work as well as longer variable
data runs.
The Fuser Assembly is designed as a customer replaceable unit for Key Technical
Operators, specially trained by Xerox Service. By training a local operator,
customers can avoid a service call and keep the press productive when fuser
replacement is required.
The Need
“I don’t have the financial or personnel resources to support
the print volume we’re asked to produce. We can’t afford press
down time, and my operators are not color specialists. We’re
doing fifty thousand pieces a month and growing.”
Background
What matters most is production speed and reducing “time to color”
Successful print shops are predicated on high quality, volume production. Every minute the
press is down is a minute lost getting the job out. Xerographic presses are extremely
sophisticated and highly sensitive machines. Like any such device, the press is susceptible to
numerous variables that influence its performance, including environmental factors,
variability in stocks and consumables, and the ordinary passage of time. All presses must be
regularly calibrated to produce optimum, consistent print quality on a wide range of media,
and this has traditionally required a great deal of time and expertise to manage properly.
The Versant 4100 is engineered with a number of technologies designed to minimize time-to-
color, maximize press uptime, and to do so without the need for a highly trained operator
staff. In practice, this means that the press automates many of the adjustment processes
that are needed to maintain optimal performance and superb print quality.
Time management is a predominant theme in all Xerox print production technology, and
thoughtfully built into our presses. We take it seriously, and make it work to help businesses
grow, even in challenging times. The Versant 4100 Press is designed and built with some of
the best of this technology—features that put time to work for your accounts, instead of
against them.
100 Pages per Minute At 100 ppm, the Versant 4100 is faster than both its competitors and
for High-Speed previous generation presses. It also offers the widest media latitude of any
Performance press in its class, supporting stock weights up to 400 gsm for both simplex
and duplex printing. This high performance on a wide range of types and
weights of media is enabled by the press’s Compact Belt Fuser. A full list of
print speeds by stock weight can be found in Section 2.2.2 of this document.
PredictPrint PredictPrint Media Manager allows operators to quickly and accurately use
Media Manager a handheld scanner and on-screen Wizard to program trays with specific

After scanning, print engine setpoints and recommended setups are
instantly downloaded from a Xerox Cloud Server that uses AI (artificial
intelligence) to pinpoint optimum settings. The Cloud Server calculates the
best settings based on a world-wide database of performance data for all
Versant 4100 presses.
Auto Duplexing Duplex printing can be challenging or impossible for heavy-weight stock, but
up to 400 gsm the Versant 4100 automates the process with auto duplexing. This feature
engages an extension to the paper path that automatically reverses the
stock for a second pass through the press. The FWA tool ensures that pages
are perfectly aligned front to back, and the duplex printed page is delivered
to the finishing stage even for heavyweight stocks up to 400 gsm. Since
heavyweight stocks may vary in performance, see the Versant 4100 Tested
Substrate List (TSL) for recommended media.
Mixed Media The Versant 4100 handles mixed media jobs with ease. With multiple pick
Flexibility points, exception page job programming, and wide media latitude of 52 –
400 gsm, the Versant 4100 can easily print on media of different sizes and
weights - within a single job. For example, specify a heavy stock for the
covers, add blank or pre-printed pages, and insert and print on tabs-- all
within a single print job. The Versant 4100 makes short work of complex
jobs. The ability of the Compact Belt Fuser to heat a wide range of stocks
evenly and quickly means that mixed media jobs run more quickly, and
more consistently, than ever before. Less heat in the fuser means faster
warm-up times, better heat consistency across the fuser belt, and better
overall print quality for all jobs including mixed medias runs. Operators can
easily manage mixed-media jobs using Productivity Mode settings control
fuser temperature adjustments for the different weight stocks, and this
maintains the best possible speed for each job.
Auto Sheet Once the press has stopped and reports a jam, the operator only has to remove
Clearing any sheets blocking the paper path. All the other sheets, before and after the jam,
are automatically ejected to top trays. Paper path sensors and motors work with
software controls to locate and move the paper to an output tray. This tool
relieves your operators from having to open all the doors and levers along the
paper path to pick out individual sheets to clear the entire path. This is a great
production time-saver.
Intuitive Controls The Versant 4100 provides flexible, powerful operator control over print options.

registration. Each of the control functions on the Versant 4100 is intuitive and
easy to use. Navigation menus are direct and clear, and simple icons aid the
operator in quickly making selections. Both the print server and the control panel
feature colorful on-screen menu systems that are designed to minimize operator
error and to maximize press productivity.
Customer The Versant 4100 features beautifully engineered replaceable parts for
Replaceable Units consumables and other high-wear items called Customer Replaceable Units
(CRUs) For (CRUs). CRUs are easy to identify and replace, often featuring load-while-run
Runtime capability that helps to keep the press running continuously.
Simplicity Dry Ink Cartridges – These contain EA Toner, which is consumed by the press in
the printing process.
Drum Cartridges – Drum cartridges are light-sensitive photoresistors that attract
toner to a latent image and help transfer the image to each page.
Dry Ink Waste Bottle – A small amount of toner is lost in the printing process as
waste. This accumulates in the dry ink waste bottle, which must be periodically
replaced.
Feed Rolls – The feed rolls assist in feeding stock into the press. Over time, they
will wear down and need to be replaced.
Air Filter – The air filter cleans the air entering the press to remove particulate
matter and keep the press running smoothly.

Compact Belt The Versant 4100’s compact belt roll fuser uses two heat rolls located inside the
Fuser fusing belt. By using a fusing belt with a low heat capacity, the belt can be heated
to Drive High using the minimal amount needed for toner fusing. Also, because of the large area
Speeds on Wide of contact between the heat rolls and the fusing belt, the belt can be efficiently
Range and uniformly heated to the required temperature. After toner fusing is

maintain a constant fusing belt temperature, thus achieving consistent fusing.
This technology makes it possible to print continuously, even on heavy weight
paper, without the fusing temperature falling. The result is consistent image
quality at high printing speeds. This same Compact Belt Fuser is used in the
Versant 80, Versant 2100, and Versant 180 Presses.
With the Versant 4100, your customers will do more with features that deliver high

• 100 pages per minute means high-speed throughput for all kinds of jobs. The press can
average a print volume of up to 250,000 prints a month (AMPV) for on-going
performance, month after month. The Duty Cycle of the Versant 4100 is 1.2 million
images. This means that your customers can provide rapid turnaround on jobs to satisfy
their clients and also take on more printing for more revenue.
• The PredictPrint Wizard dramatically saves setup time using a stock barcode scan
to instantly load tray settings, make optimum print engine adjustments for a stock,
and perform calibration and profiling when needed. You’re assured the best
performance with no decision making while also eliminating operator errors, reducing
associated waste, and delivering consistent results regardless of the press operator.
• The Versant 4100 features a specially designed Compact Belt Fuser that maintains a
low fusing temperature and varies the temperature as needed for different media. The
heating is efficient and consistent to support fast speeds and high image quality. The
consistent results will ensure high customer satisfaction with all types of jobs from short
print runs to complex workflows.
• Performance is enhanced by the Versant 4100’s ability to handle a wide weight range
of 52 to 400 gsm, print on mixed media, and the ability to auto duplex on stocks up
to 400 gsm. The wide media range and ability to handle mixed media means that
customers can take on more types of jobs to expand their offerings. This helps grow
their business.
• Specially designed features save operator time and keep the press running. Change
toner-while-run: Your customers can change any toner cartridge while the system is
running for continuous operation. Printing can also continue while paper is changed
or re-loaded. This provides non-stop operation for maximum utilization.
• Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) for efficient maintenance: Press consumables are
designed so that you can easily replace them. These include Dry Ink Cartridges, Drum
Cartridges, Dry Ink Waste Bottle, Feed Rolls, and an Air Filter. With special training
customers can also replace the Fuser Belt Assembly, These CRUs let operators return
to printing faster when routine maintenance is required.
• Xerox Connect Advantage ensures that your customers receive the most efficient and
satisfactory service for every situation that they might face. This service minimizes
downtime and improves overall productivity.
• With the Versant 4100 intuitive Control Panel, even operators who are not highly skilled
can operate the press and produce beautiful, consistent jobs, day in and day out. This
cuts training time and means fewer errors as well as less waste.
Background
Today’s in-plant and print-for-pay shops feel price pressures like never before, and skilled
operators are not always available or affordable. But when it comes to print quality,
customers are increasingly unforgiving. The ubiquity of high-resolution color screens in
desktop and mobile devices, and the comparative ease with which images can be transferred
to paper have conditioned the public to expect outstanding resolution and color reproduction
as a matter of course. Achieving that for any one particular piece might not be difficult, but
doing so for every piece, and every job, day in and day out—that is the greatest challenge for
any print shop.
High print quality has always been the hallmark of a Xerox press, and the Versant 4100
continues that tradition with technologies that dramatically improve image quality.
Ultra HD for High As it has done so often in the past, Xerox again takes the lead in xerographic
Resolution and imaging quality with a technology that places it head and shoulders above
Superb Detail competitive offerings. This technology is called Ultra HD (HD for “High
Definition”). Ultra HD delivers unrivaled image quality by supporting high
resolution throughout the imaging chain, first at the print server and then at the
print engine. First the print server renders images at 1,200 x 1,200 x up to 10
dpi—quadruple the resolution of previous generation presses. The color depth
from the print servers is a unique Xerox feature that means that files are
rendered at 10 bits per pixel. A dual-cable high speed serial transmission
connection to the print engine, along with print engine color processing, all
support the RIP color depth. The print engine then continues the Ultra HD
processing by imaging the data at 2,400 x 2400 dpi. The result is a remarkable
improvement on the printed page, with smooth, beautiful gradients and tints in
graphic communications pieces. Fine lines and small text print with
unprecedented clarity and accuracy—no more stair-stepped curves on the
printed page or fuzzy inaccurate text at small point sizes.
Ultra HD for High In a special white paper on Versant’s advances in imaging, InfoTrends, the
Resolution and leading market research and consulting firm for document solutions, writes:

data. This sets the bar for all other systems whose print engines currently can
only accept 8-bit data. This is a significant technological advance, and is an
important differentiator for the Versant product family.”

Automated Color Every digital press needs some form of color management, and Xerox’s
Quality System Automated Color Quality Suite (ACQS) is designed to virtually eliminate the
(ACQS) time and error associated with color management—automatically. ACQS
automates the most critical processes of press calibration and destination
profiling with remarkable levels of speed and operator independence. ACQS
ensures accurate and stable color, without the need for a hand-held
spectrophotometer. And ACQS automates the measuring of targets during
destination profiling so that accurate color is custom-mapped onto different
stocks with much less manual effort. For both calibration and profiling, the
operator only needs to click to initiate the process and accept the results.
Full Width Array for The Full Width Array (FWA) enhances the power of the ACQS color
automated management software to improve color stability, accuracy and repeatability.
calibration, profiling, The FWA is placed right along the paper path. This color measurement
and image quality device automatically reads target charts generated during print server
adjustments calibration and destination profiling. The data from the FWA is delivered to
the print server for calculation and color adjustments. FWA reduces time-
consuming manual color maintenance tasks such as manually scanning
targets and makes them operator-initiated functions. The FWA also
eliminates operator errors. By streamlining calibration and profiling tasks,
non-productive printer time is reduced, facilitating quick, on-time job
turnaround.
EA ECO Toner Delivers The Versant family uses a specially formulated Emulsion Aggregation (EA)
Offset-like Look toner that consists of very small, uniform particle sizes. With EA Toner, less
toner is required, less waste is generated, and the toner requires less heat
and energy to fuse to the paper. Also, no messy fuser oil is required.
Moreover, the toner creates prints with finer lines and a higher quality
appearance than conventional toners.
Full Width Array Traditionally, three of the most important and time-consuming press
Image Quality adjustments are Image-to-Media Alignment, Density Uniformity
Adjustments Adjustment, and Image Transfer Adjustment. The Versant 4100 provides
an automated tool for operators to easily perform these adjustments.
Once initiated by an operator from the Tools menu, the entire process is
automatic.
Image to Media Alignment Adjustment ensures that each page image is
properly aligned for registration, perpendicularity, skew, and
magnification. This ensures consistent quality printing from the beginning
of the job to the end. Alignment is especially important for duplex jobs
that later need to be cut down or trimmed. Any mis-registration in this
type of job will lead to costly waste because the cuts will be made in the
wrong place. Density Uniformity Adjustment ensures that ink density
remains consistent from the inboard edge to the outboard edge of every
page. Inconsistent density can result in printed pages that have washed-
out areas or poor color saturation. For example, branded materials, such
as business cards, are most often printed in multi-up fashion, meaning
several identical images are printed on the same physical page. In these
cases, it is critical for the colors in one area of the page to precisely match
the colors in another area of the page. Image Transfer Adjustment
corrects for uneven toner coverage and color shift—issues that can occur
on heavy-weight stocks as well as textured or specialty stocks. Once an
operator selects this tool, the print engine adjustments are automatic and
quick, with the uneven toner and color shift quickly corrected.
Real Time Closed Loop The Versant 4100’s extensive automation makes achieving and
Process Controls for maintaining excellent color as simple as possible. The press continuously
Color Stability monitors itself for variance from reference or centerline values, and makes
corrections in the imaging path automatically, without the need for
operator involvement. This improves print consistency from page to page,
and extends the time needed between operator-initiated procedures.
Automatically Associate Advanced Stock Setup Tool lets operators customize print engine
Print Engine Settings parameters for specific stocks, so that when the stock is selected the
with Selected Stock parameters are automatically applied for a job to achieve the best image
Using Advanced Stock quality. Custom options include adjustments for Alignment, Paper Curl,
Setup Tray Air Assist, Image Transfer, Regi-Loop, Image Transfer for Trail Edge,
Paper Speed at Transfer Module, Fuser Temperature, and Tray Heaters.
A stock can be linked to one or a set of these adjustments. These custom
settings place instant quality control in the hands of the operator with
a simple menu selection for a stock. With the optional PredictPrint Media
Manager, these settings are all automatically maintained using a scan
of a stock’s barcode and an on-screen Wizard.
Digital Press The Versant 4100 is compliant with IDEAlliance Digital Press Certification
Compliance for (DPC). This program certifies commercial production xerographic and
Repeatable, Reliable inkjet devices to meet print standards in areas of colorimetric accuracy,
Color uniformity, repeatability, durability, and registration. DPC considers the
entire system, including the digital front-end, print engine, and paper. The
certification is based on international standards ISO 12647-8, 15311, and
15339. For details on the results of the Versant 4100 certification, see the

The Versant 4100 is also compliant with FOGRA. FOGRA is a German-
based research institute for the graphic arts which is actively involved in
maintaining several ISO standards (ISO TC 130) for color management
and printing. Based on the ISO standards, FOGRA provides certification for
print providers, and the Versant 4100 has been awarded this certification.
The IDEAlliance and FOGRA certifications mean that customers can be
confident that the press meets rigorous industry standards for accurate,
consistent color and overall performance. This is important to some
customers.
• At 1,200 x 1,200 dpi, the Versant 4100’s Ultra HD RIP resolution delivers extraordinary
image quality across a broad range of media sizes and weights.
• Superior print engine resolution of 2400 x 2400 x 1 means new kinds of jobs can be
printed—jobs with extremely fine lines, or very small text. Every detail pops—in black,
white or color.
• Color depth for the EFI print servers has been enhanced to 10 bits or 1,024 color levels—
the best in the digital printing industry.
• The combination of rendering resolution, imaging resolution, and expanded half tone
screens yields a smoother, crisper resolution of objects, improved graphic sweeps, and
delivering vibrant images.
• For graphic communications pieces, gradients and tints are smooth and beautiful, and
soft shadows are realistic. This superb image quality will keep demanding customers
satisfied and drive return business for higher revenues.

files stored in the cloud, mobile devices, and extraordinary personalization—these have

has to stand out from the crowd with new levels of quality, new levels of sophistication,
and new levels of consistency in output.
Versant 4100 comes with an impressive suite of standard features, as well as a choice of print

Understanding Print The Xerox EX-P 4100 Print Server Powered by Fiery is an excellent choice for
Servers for more Graphic Arts and Commercial Printers, especially shops that print a lot of
information about how photos and variable data images. This server features Fiery HyperRIP, an
print servers can help exclusive EFI technology that helps achieve uninterrupted production and
your customers. expands performance with parallel job processing. It provides more power to
cost-effectively handle complex files with multiple layers, transparencies, and
overprints. The EX-P 4100 Print Server is over twice as fast compared to the
EX 4100 Print Server, making it the best choice for demanding production
environments. It is based on EFI’s FS200 software platform, and sets a new
standard for color accuracy and image quality by using a new 10-bit, 1200
dpi processing technology for RIPping. Processing tinted text and graphics at
these resolutions produces sharper edges for an exceptionally crisp, clean
appearance, and Ultra Smooth Gradients that eliminate "stair stepped"
gradient shades that are common in the digital printing of vector images. The
result is higher print quality, less rework, and more satisfied customers. In
addition, this server provides outstanding job control and color management
with sophisticated tools such as Fiery Impose-Compose, Variable Data
Processing, Fiery Color Profiler Suite, and the Fiery Graphic Arts Package,
Premium Edition.
Xerox® EX 4100 Print Server, Powered by Fiery®
The EX 4100 Print Server provides less processing power than the EX-P Print
Server because it does not have the Fiery HyperRIP. However, this server
provides most of the same tools that give operators easy control of color
output and flexible job management using Command Workstation 5.8. This
server comes standard with Fiery Impose-Compose and Fiery Color Profiler
Suite. The Fiery Graphic Arts Premium Edition Package is an option.
Both the EFI servers support Ultra HD Resolution with 10-bit color rendering,
which produces prints with outstanding fine lines, sharp text and very smooth
gradients (branded by EFI as “Ultra Smooth Gradients”. In addition, the EFI
GrayFont technology used in the EX 4100 and EX-P 4100 Print Servers
provides optimized edge thickness and definition for text and graphics.
GrayFont technology also preserves a higher final resolution for fully
saturated images because they can be printed at the full resolution of the
original source image.

Stock Management Operators can quickly select the right stock for each job using the print
server’s Paper Catalog. This tool enables rapid selection from a library of pre-
defined media, as well as easy media maintenance via creating, deleting, and
changing definitions. And when a Custom Paper Profile is created on the
press Control Panel to create and save print engine adjustments for any stock,
the profile is sent to the print server for easy selection from the Paper
Catalog.
Advanced Workflow FreeFlow® Core connects the Versant 4100 to your customer’s entire
Options – FreeFlow® operation with intelligent workflow solutions that help them to do more with
Core less. With FreeFlow Core, they’ll see a more efficient print manufacturing

FreeFlow® Core is a total solution for automated print production, including
JDF/JMF connectivity to external systems and workflows for conversion,

The FreeFlow® Advanced Prepress module provides powerful tools for PDF

Feeding and Finishing With a wide range of options from basic stapling, hole punching and folding
to more advanced booklet making and trimming, the Versant 4100 can
handle whatever workflow your customers require. The line-up of finishing
options is designed for modularity, so that units can be added as needed. The
position of each finishing module in the line-up ensures the most flexible
range of output from the press. For example, the Inserter is placed first in the
line so that inserts can be punched, stapled, stacked, trimmed, and inserted
into booklets. Similarly, the C/Z Folder and Crease and Two-Sided Trimmer
are both designed for placement before the Production Ready Booklet Maker,

Complex print jobs often involve multiple stocks and substrates, and the need to produce low-
volume short-run jobs means that your customers need flexibility on the front end. Long-run
jobs need high-capacity feeders to minimize operator involvement, and robust stackers and
finishers. Modern print shops need to be able to easily handle both.
Feeding is about capacity, transport consistency, and versatility. With three high capacity
options to choose from, the Versant 4100 offers capacity when it’s needed most, and
consistency for a wide range of stocks and job requirements that minimize paper path jams

Standard Three internal paper trays hold 550 sheets each, and feed both coated and
Internal Paper Trays uncoated stocks in sizes ranging from 5.50 × 7.17“ (139.7 × 182.0 mm) up to
13.00 × 19.21“ (330.2 × 488.0 mm), and weights up to 256 gsm.
Standard Used for special stocks, this tray holds up to 250 sheets of paper 52 – 400 gsm.

XLS Vacuum Feeder

holds 250 sheets. All trays use state-of-the-art vacuum-feeding technology
instead of roll or belt-feeding components—this delivers outstanding sheet
separation for reliable performance.
Optional Dual High Two units can be configured together to create a Dual High Capacity XLS
Capacity XLS Vacuum Vacuum Feeder. This provides one XLS Tray and three standard trays. The dual
Feeder configuration must be set up at system installation and cannot be changed later.
Load-While-Run Paper can be loaded while the press is running, saving cycle time and permitting

Finishing is one of the most critical areas where versatility can make a huge difference in the
ability to respond to a range of customer needs. The Versant 4100 supports a wide range of
finishing capabilities that expand the types of jobs that can be produced, and increases the
printer’s capability to satisfy customers. The Versant 4100 features finishing options that
include inserting, stacking, multi-position stapling and hole punching, saddle-stitch booklet
making, sorting, collating, trimming, and folding (tri-fold, z-fold, tabloid z-fold, and square-
fold). The Versant 4100 also offers new Business Ready (BR) Finishing options for customers
with lighter production needs. It’s the widest range of options in the industry.
Inserter Inserts preprinted and blank media into printed documents. Placed up-front in the
finishing line-up to enable other finishing on inserted sheets, such as trimming,
punching, folding, and stapling.
High Capacity The High Capacity Stacker features high volume stacking for long production runs.
Stacker Two stackers can be chained together for double the stacking capacity.
Production The Production Ready Finisher enables coated booklets, brochures and bi-fold
Ready Finisher mailers as well as stacking, stapling, and hole punching. It also includes an
interposer input tray for sheet or cover insertion. Even more versatility can be
obtained with the addition of the optional Folder Module for tri-folds, z-folds and

Maker Finisher
C/Z Folder The Folder Module produces jobs with “Z” fold on large 11 x 17” (A3) stock, and “Z”
Module and “C” fold jobs on letter stock (8.5 x 11” or A4). Refer to Section 3 for a detailed
description of the “Z” and “C” fold options available with the optional Folder
Module.
Punch Module Punches holes in paper sizes up to 11.69 x 16.53” (297.0 x 431.8 mm). The Punch
2/4, 2/3, or can optionally be configured inside all PR Finishers. Options include 2/3 hole, 2/4
Swedish 4-hole hole, and Swedish 4 hole patterns.
Xerox® The SquareFold® Trimmer enhances the power of the Versant 4100 by producing a
SquareFold® square fold on the binding of booklets and face trimming the edges of each
Trimmer booklet. The square fold and trim add value by delivering a more professional
finish. Square Fold flattens the spine of the document creating a document that
looks almost perfect bound in spine appearance. By adjusting the amount of
crease on the spine, documents lay flatter. Face Trimming cuts the face edge of
booklets eliminating a feathered look.
Xerox® Crease This trimmer cuts off the head and foot of sheets (inboard and outboard edges).

printing industry, the term “automation” is frequently used, and we often take it for granted. But
what does it really mean? Put another way, how do your customers value their time? Like most
business owners or managers, they probably know that time management for a company makes the
important difference between mediocre performance and excellence in execution. For a business,
time really is money. It’s a resource to be mindfully managed.
Time management is a predominant theme in all Xerox print production technology, and
thoughtfully built into our presses. We take it seriously, and make it work to help businesses grow,
even in challenging times. Versant presses are designed and built with some of the best of this
technology—features that put time to work for your customers, instead of against them. The
Versant presses will actually help them manage time in their shop without having to be present and
monitor the work.
What are these important automated tools that can help you reach high levels of productivity, and
deliver reliable results? Some are fully automated and working under the covers of the press, while
others require an operator click to initiate a function; but they all span the production workflow from
job submission to finishing, and they all save operator time and preserve up-time for the press.
Without these tools, procedures take much longer, the press is down too long and too often, and
there is more waste and re-printing because of operational errors. In addition, very often operators
simply do not calibrate the press or create profiles for stock because the steps are too complex or
they don’t want to take the time needed for long procedures. The result is unreliable and
inconsistent output that may not satisfy customers.
The automated tools on the Versant presses can help transform a careless print shop culture into an
efficient one that delivers quick job turns with faster setup and the ability to achieve stable,
consistent, and accurate print quality. For example, when operators learn that they can perform
calibrations with two clicks, one to start the process and one to accept the results—and it takes only
two minutes and not twenty minutes—they will do it daily and take pride in the IQ results. They will
gladly profile a new stock because this process also takes only two or three minutes, and requires just
initiation and acceptance at the end of the process. Other built-in tools let the software do the work,
and require no operator intervention, no complex steps, and no difficult decisions.
• PredictPrint Media Manager and Stock Wizard – This powerful and versatile tool provides for
fast and accurate media management in a busy production environment. Operators can simply
scan a stock’s barcode to load stock attributes, load print engine setpoints, and load
recommended setups for a stock. The setpoints and recommended setups are determined by the
Xerox Cloud Server, with access to a world-wide database of fault and performance data. The
intelligent processing of this data delivers the optimum settings for each stock scanned. An easy-
to-follow Wizard guides the operator through all recommended setups. Within PredictPrint
Media Manager, a Stock Library provides for the efficient organization and access of individual
stocks. Also, the operator can create and name special Alignment and Fold Profiles that are
quickly selected for challenging media, such as lightweight or heavyweight stocks. The Advanced
Stock Setup Tool in the Stock Library Manager adjusts print engine parameters for specific
stocks, so that when the stock is selected for a tray the parameters are automatically applied for
the job to achieve the best image quality. Adjustments include Fuser Temperature, Fuser Speed,
Paper Speed at Transfer, Roll Nip Pressure, Primary and Secondary Voltage Transfer, Alignment
Roll Pressure. Using one of these adjustments, operators can perform an Image Transfer
Adjustment which corrects for uneven toner coverage and color shift—issues which can occur on
heavy-weight stocks or textured or specialty stocks. This adjustment, and many other important
settings, let customers easily optimize image quality when needed.
• Automated Sheet Clearing – Once the press has stopped and reports a jam, the operator only
has to remove any sheets blocking the paper path. All the other sheets, before and after the jam,
are automatically ejected to top trays. Paper path sensors and motors work with software
controls to locate and move the paper to an output tray. This tool relieves operators from having
to open all the doors and levers along the paper path to pick out individual sheets to clear the
entire path. This is a great production time-saver.
• Production Accurate Registration (PAR) – This sub-system is a combination of optical and
mechanical technologies that ensures a precise +/- .5 mm front-to-back registration from the
Advanced High Capacity Feeder for stocks up to 300 gsm. PAR uses a registration gate in the
paper path to de-skew the lead edge of the paper and then a Contact Image Sensor to read the
inboard lead edge and adjust the sheet position, as needed.
• Xerox Full Width Array (FWA) – The FWA provides automatic target reads for print server
calibration and destination profiling and hands that data over to color management software.
This ensures stable, accurate, and repeatable color and eliminates the need for operators to use
a time consuming hand-held spectrophotometer. The FWA also baselines the press by
maintaining uniformity in toner density across the page from the inboard side to the outboard
side of the paper (perpendicular to the direction the paper moves through the press). The press
first prints test patters that the FWA measures, and then the print engine automatically adjusts
the print density settings. In addition, this tool automatically adjusts the image alignment on
the paper (X/Y position, perpendicularity, skew, magnification).
2.3.2 Convenient Calibration and Profiling with the Full Width Array
The Automated Color Quality Suite (ACQS) on the Versant 4100 works with the Full Width Array
and the print server to provide unique calibration and profiling capabilities, as follows:
Color Calibration with • Operators initiate the procedure at the print server using the Calibration

Ultra HD Resolution is a precise combination of increased RIP resolution, a proprietary imaging path
through the system, and VCSEL ROS technology (the laser used in the Xerographic printing process).
As a complementary set of core technologies, Ultra HD includes features that optimize RIP
resolution, color depth, halftoning, and print imaging density. Together, these technologies produce
extraordinary new levels of image quality for vector images, fine lines, text, and ultra-smooth
gradients without visible stepping. For customers, there’s no longer a reason to avoid the elements
that used to be a problem for digital print—gradients, thin fonts and vector graphics.
Ultra Smooth Gradients • Large gradients are printed consistently, without visible
stepping.
Line Screen and Object Oriented • A choice of line screens and the size of the halftone cell
Halftoning enable incredibly fine detail, even to the point of rendering
images and text on the same page at different line screens
for optimal results.
Fonts • Sharp and crisp text prints down to the smallest detail.
In a special white paper on Versant’s advances in imaging, InfoTrends, the leading market research
and consulting firm for document solutions, writes: “In the class of cut-sheet color electro-
photographic products with Fiery front ends, no other system provider has a print engine capable of
receiving 10-bit data. This sets the bar for all other systems whose print engines currently can only
accept 8-bit data. This is a significant technological advance, and is an important differentiator for
the Versant product family.”
Between the print server and the print engine, a new Common Device Interface (CDI) cable, with
wide bandwidth, now completes this data transfer. No data is lost, and the result is finer lines, crisper
fonts, and better overall image quality.
In a digital press, images are produced by laser light striking a photo-sensitive drum. Anywhere light
touches the drum, a small spot of ink will result on the printed page. Anywhere light is prevented
from touching the surface, no ink will be deposited. Halftone screening is the process of deciding
where light should, and should not be permitted through to the drum. Screening is needed for each
toner color in the press.
The Versant 4100 offers an expanded array of halftone screens or “dots” that differ in geometry,
resolution, and ink consumption. These halftone dots or “frequencies” are designed to yield either
smoother, crisper resolution of objects or improved uniform tinted areas (smooth, less mottle or
grain). These halftone screens can be selected by the operator according to the needs of the print
job.
FM Screen • FM Stochastic
Not all customers will need this level of detail in controlling the image quality of the press, but if you
are calling on a customer who is concerned about maximizing the IQ of every job, the Versant 4100’s
selectable halftone screens are designed to do just that: maximize flexibility. For example, customers
can select a higher halftone dot frequency to bring out the details and definition in the print images
or use a lower halftone dot frequency to maximize the uniformity of tints across large color areas. A
higher frequency might be used to bring out the detail in text and photos whereas a lower frequency
would be helpful to maintain a uniform appearance for an image with large sweeps of sky, ocean –
or just straight tint. Moreover, the Versant 4100 print server allows the operator to select halftones
on the basis of object types within a printed page. The option to set halftones is not unique to the
Versant 4100, as competitive offerings also have this option. However, some competitors emphasize
the importance of this option, and you should be ready to point out that the Versant 4100 has this
feature.
Important Note: The halftones screens listed above are not the same as the Versant 3100 halftone
options. Improvements have been made for some screens by changing the individual color
frequencies to achieve more stable color. In addition, the 210 Cluster Dot has been added. This new
210 Cluster Dot is closest to the previous Versant 3100 default of 200 Cluster Dot. Therefore, for
matching legacy output from the Versant 3100, accounts should use the new 210 Cluster Dot.
Otherwise they should generally use the 200 Dot default.
Fully saturated colors—that is, colors with no tinting—are printed with tiny toner dots that are
placed directly next to each other, with no white space in between, except as needed to reproduce
Tinted tones, however—lighter colors—are created by mixing with white, or in the case of a
xerographic press, by leaving space in between the toner dots. More space produces a lighter tint.
This is accomplished in a number of ways by controlling the location and size of the toner spots
placed on the page, or by using a lower-resolution screen.
Ultra HD resolution ensures that all source objects are RIPped at a minimum of 1,200 dpi. Fully
saturated objects are then printed without the need for screening at 1,200 dpi, because they are not
tinted. However, Fiery print servers are able to improve upon this for saturated objects by using a
technology called “GreyFont”. GreyFont technology first rips saturated objects at 2,400 dpi. These
objects are then down-sampled to 1,200 dpi for transmission along the image path to the print
engine, but special tags are added that allow the print engine to reconstruct the 2,400 dpi image at
print time. The tag essentially preserves the information that was lost in the down-sampling step.
The result is that the edges of fully saturated objects such as lines, characters, and graphic, are much
crisper than they would otherwise be.
Imaging on Paper
Inside the Versant 4100, the photoreceptor plays a crucial role in the imaging of a printed page.
Photoreceptors are multi-layer thin film devices that convert light into electrostatic images. The
Versant 4100’s photoreceptor receives light from an extraordinary imaging device called the VCSEL
ROS. (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser Raster Output Scanner).
A ROS is a light source. It is a thin beam of light that moves from one side of the photoreceptor to
the other (scanning) to lay down a series of dots. One series of dots is called a line, and the ROS lays
down line after line of dots on the photoreceptor to create an image. The resolution of the image is
a function of the number of dots on a line, and the number of lines on a page.
VCSEL operates by projecting four light beams into the space previously occupied by a single light
beam. Moreover, eight sets of four beams (32 beams in total) can be used in parallel for
simultaneous scanning, thereby enabling the Versant 4100’s rated printing speed of 80 pages per
minute. As a result, the Versant 4100 is able to produce excellent sharpness, detailed shadows, and
bright highlights at high rates of speed.
Note: VCSEL ROS technology is used across the Xerox Versant line and by a number of competitive
presses as well.
As run lengths decrease, reducing setup time is more important than ever, making reliable color a
valuable asset. Your customers need to apply excellent print quality and improved cost effectiveness
to differentiate and build their business. The Automated Color Quality Suite tools built into the
Versant 4100 do precisely that, and are so easy to use that operators can get up to speed with very
little training.
ACQS takes the variability out of the color equation by incorporating standardized color
measurements using the Full Width Array to calibrate color on the press as well as generate accurate
destination profiles for different stocks.
ACQS works in combination with the PredictPrint Media Manager to initiate calibration and/or
destination profiling when a stock’s barcode is scanned for a job. Within the PredictPrint Wizard,
operators only need to start the procedure and then accept the results when all the work is done.
The ACQS software along with the PredictPrint Wizard minimize the time and effort spent on
calibration and profiling, while achieving accurate, consistent results for every print run.

Consistency within a run the Intermediate Belt Transfer (IBT)
When using PredictPrint, operators do not have to make decisions about calibration and profiling,
or know how to perform the procedures—it’s all automatic. However, the procedures can be
performed by operators if needed for stocks outside of PredictPrint. These would be local custom
Color accuracy means that the press will produce precisely the colors on the printed page that have
been defined in the source file. All devices have different color gamuts, white points, and varying
abilities to display colors accurately. For example, computer screens, which are backlit, have a
different color gamut than a press, which prints on media that reflects light. The same image will
look different from one computer screen to the next, or when printed on colored paper, rather than
white paper. In order for colors to be reproduced accurately from device to device, and from stock to
stock, there must be an independent standard against which each device and stock can be
calibrated. To achieve this, the Versant 4100 prints color to GRAcol, Fogra and Pantone references to
achieve the most accurate and consistent color.
The Versant 4100 is also compliant with IDEAlliance Digital Press Certification (DPC), which means
that it meets their print standards for color, print properties and print production. DPC certifies the
entire system, including the digital front-end, print engine, and paper. The Versant 4100 is also
compliant with Fogra. Fogra is a German-based research institute for the graphic arts that is actively
involved in maintaining several ISO standards for color management and printing. Based on the ISO
standards, Fogra provides certification for print providers, and the Versant 4100 has been awarded
this certification.
Compliance with industry standards such as IDEAlliance and Forga means that customers can be
confident in press performance and color accuracy and feel secure that the Versant 4100 meets the
most demanding industry standards. Assurances like these are especially important for customers
who use colors for brand identification or to visually connect a series of materials, such as collateral,
direct mail, and business cards. The Versant 4100 delivers outstanding results every time.
Some customers may be interested in G7 qualification, also issued by IDEAlliance. This certification
is not system-based as with the Digital Press Certification (DPC), but print shop-based, and focused
on a gray-balance process. You can tell interested customers with confidence that the Versant 4100
will easily achieve G7 qualification, because its profiles are already very close to the G7 gray balance
aim. When working for G7 qualification, Versant 4100 customers will need to use the hand-held
spectrophotometer instead of the Full Width Array.
To do so, the Versant 4100 features an internal, automated process that images density patches on
the Intermediate Belt Transport (IBT), as well as internal sensors that constantly monitor the system
and make quality adjustments real time. This continuous or “closed-loop” process maintains color
consistency and color-to-color registration throughout a run. Color patches and registration marks
are placed on the image carrier between every impression. These patches are then continuously
measured during a job, and adjustments are made automatically by the press as required. The result
is higher color quality and consistency with no operator involvement, and a positive impact on your
customer’s productivity.
This is accomplished with sheet-handling mechanisms in both the Advanced High Capacity Feeders
and the Aligner Transport. First, the Nip Release Rollers in the High Capacity Feeders help sheets
remain flat and positioned by preventing them from being pushed and pulled at the same time. The
stock then moves from the feeder to the Aligner Transport Registration Gate. The paper stops at the
gate forming a buckle that helps to de-skew it. Then the gate drops and the sheet moves under a
Contact Image Sensor (CIS) that detects the inboard lead edge corner and provides adjustments to
center the media. The paper is then transported to the Intermediate Belt Transfer (IBT) in the
correct position to meet the image being transferred from the belt.
The Versant 4100’s speed and image quality are achieved by break-through technology in the fusing
system. The Compact Belt Fuser assures that heat and pressure are applied uniformly across a page,
even at the high press speeds of the Versant 4100. The result is that a wide variety of media types
and weights are supported by the press at high speeds. Your customers will see print speeds as high
as 100 images per minute for stock weights as high as 400 gsm.
The Compact Belt Fuser has been designed for long life and reliability as well. This reliability supports
the system’s ability to average from 230,000 prints per month in print volume, and up to 1.2 million
prints in a single duty cycle. The life of the Fuser is 650,000 prints.
Finally, the Compact Belt Fuser fuses the toner to the page at high speed, with consistent, even
heating, even for heavyweight stocks up to 400 gsm. More beautiful prints per hour result, with less
operator involvement, fewer reprints, and less maintenance. That means more productivity for the
press, and a better bottom line for your customer’s business.
The FWA consists of a series of RGB sensors that span the entire width of the paper path. As Xenon
lamps illuminate test patterns or calibration prints moving along the paper path, a CCD Assembly
reads the reflected light from the lamps and measures the red, green, and blue light separately. The
CCD converts the light into analog voltage signals and sends this data to the unit’s processor for
analysis.
In addition to calibration and profiling, the Full Width Array performs two automatic IQ
adjustments:
• Automatic Density Uniformity. This adjustment maintains uniformity in toner density across
the page from the inboard side to the outboard side of the paper (perpendicular to the direction
the paper moves through the press). The press prints test patters that the FWA measures, and
then the print engine automatically adjusts the print density settings. Although the process is
automatic after initiation, the press prints test patterns that the operator can optionally check
visually:
Using the FWA, an operator accomplishes these tasks with a few simple menu selections.
These adjustments previously required a service engineer to complete.
In addition, the Full Width Array can be used to conveniently calibrate your print server and
create destination profiles without having to manually scan targets. Measurements and
adjustments are automatic, once initiated by an operator.
Ultra HD Resolution The Versant 4100 Features 1,200 x 1,200 dpi Raster Image
Processing (RIP) for extremely detailed, lifelike images, fine lines,
and sharp, beautiful text, even in very small point sizes. And with
either of the EFI print servers, the unique 10-bit color depth provides
1,024 color density levels to deliver Ultra Smooth Gradients.
PredictPrint Media Manager An integrated media solution that enables operators to quickly
and accurately use a hand-held scanner and on-screen Wizard to:
• Assign stocks to trays for a job
• Perform print engine adjustments to optimize print
performance for the stock
• Complete Calibration and Profiling for stocks to maximize
image quality and color output
The process is initiated by simply scanning a barcode for the stock
to be used. After scanning, the operator is guided by a Wizard
through a series of setups—many of which are automatic. The
Wizard guides operators painlessly through basic and advanced
setups to optimize printing performance while eliminating errors
and reducing associated waste. (See Section 3.5 for full description.)
Xerox Full Width Array (FWA) The FWA provides automatic target reads for print server calibration
and destination profiling and also performs automatic density
uniformity adjustments and image-to-media alignment
adjustments.
Closed Loop Process Controls Closed Loop Process Controls constantly monitor the system during
each print run to make color quality adjustments real time. This fully
automated process maintains color consistency and color-to-color
registration throughout each print run.
Automated Sheet Clearing A time-saving feature that relieves operators from having to open
all the doors and levers along the paper path to pick out individual
sheets to clear the entire path when a jam occurs.
Compact Belt Fuser The Compact Belt Fuser features a long component life and
supports high press speeds, better image consistency, and the
ability to run heavyweight and mixed media.
Automated Color Quality ACQS simplifies and shortens the process of providing accurate and
System (ACQS) predictable color by automating calibration and destination
profiling on the press. This software facilitates communication
between the print server and the print engine to achieve optimal
results with little operator involvement.
ACQS procedures eliminate the need for an operator to manually
scan target sheets using an external spectrophotometer, thus
improving accuracy, avoiding errors, and saving time. In addition,
since color management is fast and easy with ACQS, operators will
be more disciplined in routinely performing calibrations to maintain
the best color quality.
Predict Print Stock Library Provides for fast media management in a busy production
environment by enabling operators to store a large listing of stock
settings and retrieve them with single click to assign to a press tray.
Also, operators can create and assign special Alignment and Fold
Profiles for challenging media and set custom print engine
parameters for automatic application to specific stocks.
PredictPrint Profiles Function Create custom Alignment Profiles to adjust the position of the print
image on the paper. This includes adjustments for Registration,
Perpendicularity, Skew, and/or Magnification. Also create custom
Fold Adjustment Profiles to adjust the fold and staple positions for
documents. Once created, a profile can be selected by name from
a drop-down menu on the Tray Stock Properties window for
Alignment Profiles or on a stock’s Advanced Setup window for Fold
Adjustment Profiles.
Xerox Connect Advantage A comprehensive suite of support services ensures that customers

transmission of performance data from the press to Xerox as well as
remote call-in help and on-side technical assistance. This means

3 Feeder Tray 5 This tray, also called the Multi-Sheet Inserter or MSI, is typically used for
feeding heavy-weight media, envelopes, and small sizes down to 3.9 x 5.7”
(98 x 146 mm). Also used for printing extra-long sheets up to 26” (660.4 mm).
Tray 5 is located on top of the Advanced High Capacity Feeder.
6 Control Panel with This panel serves as the main control point for making or changing print and
Touch Screen administration settings. It also shows status and error messages, and indicates
when consumables need replacement.
7 Toner Cartridges (Behind Cover) Contains K (Black), C (Cyan), M (Magenta), and Y (Yellow)
toner. The Toner Cartridges are Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) for easy
on-going maintenance. These can be replaced while the press is running.
7 Drum Cartridges (Behind Cover) The Drum Cartridges are key xerographic components and
there is one for each color. In the imaging process, an electrical charge is
placed on each drum and then a laser creates a latent image on the charged
drum. Toner is then attracted to the drum before being transferred to paper by
a revolving belt. The Drum Cartridges are Customer Replaceable Units (CRU)
for easy periodic maintenance.
7 ROS Widow Wand Stored on the inside of the front door, the wand lets operators easily clean the
Raster Output Scanner windows to maintain the best image quality.
7 Fuser Assembly (Behind Cover) Contains components that fix the image to the paper using
heat and pressure. The Versant 4100 Fuser features advanced technology that
supports the high speed of the press and heavyweight papers.
8 Interface Decurler Connects the print engine paper path with optional down-line finishers, and
Module also cools and decurls the paper as it passes through the unit.
9 Optional Finisher The press offers a number of optional finishing modules to satisfy almost any
job requirement. Shown here is the Production Ready Booklet Maker Finisher
—a finisher that decurls sheets, stacks, staples, and creates booklets.
Optional Envelope Support Kit (497K17190) for the Advanced High Capacity Feeder
The Xerox® Versant® 4100 Press features an optional hardware kit that enables a greater quantity of
envelopes to be fed from the Advanced High Capacity Feeder internal trays. This optional kit consists
of two plastic pieces that fit into the bottom of the tray and a bracket that attaches to the side of the
tray. The plastic pieces lift one side of the stack of envelopes to offset the extra thickness of the flaps.
This keeps the stack level for feeding and enables more envelopes to be fed from the tray. The size
and quantity of envelopes that can be loaded depends on the envelope design and media weight.
The kit consists of seven plastic pieces that fit into the tray depending on the type of envelope to be
printed. The components are labeled A, B, C, D, E, F1, and F2. The customer consults the chart below
to see which components need to be inserted based the envelope to be printed:

• The Xerox® EX-P 4100 Print Server Powered by Fiery® is the more
powerful of the two EFI server options. This print server is ideal for
production environments that need more power to cost-effectively
handle complex files with multiple layers, transparencies,
and overprints. With 4 TB data storage, 32 GB system memory,
and Hyper RIP parallel processing, the EX-P 4100 has the capacity
to handle the most challenging production schedules. This server
comes standard with the Fiery Graphic Arts Pro Package,
as well as Fiery Impose-Compose and Fiery Color Profiler Suite.
• The Xerox® EX 4100 Print Server Powered by Fiery® provides less processing power than
the EX-P Print Server because it does not have the Fiery HyperRIP. However, this server provides
the same tools that give operators easy control of color output and flexible job management
using Command Workstation 6.4. It also features Ultra High Definition Resolution with 10 bit
color depth and Fiery Ultra Smooth Gradients. This server comes standard with Fiery Impose-
Compose and Fiery Color Profiler Suite. The Fiery Graphic Arts Pro Package is an option.
In addition to this v1.1 software upgrade, the hardware can also be upgraded from NX Pro Gen II to

Fiery Impose
Impose provides an intuitive tool to automate and streamline prepress tasks. This WYSIWYG tool lets
users preview jobs before they are RIPped, and enables last-minute changes to text and images with
PDF editing tools. Users can create and apply unlimited imposition templates. Impose applies
imposition layouts based on job-defined trim box values and it automatically detects the trim box
and bleed box defined in source documents. With Impose, users can also set imposition for VDP
documents prior to processing. In general, users can cut waste by viewing all jobs as they will print
before starting the print run. They can then use the tool to add or delete pages as well as edit text
or graphics for last minute changes. (Standard for the EX 4100 and EX-P 4100.)
Fiery Compose
Compose provides a WYSIWYG page-view panel for make-ready tasks such as document merging,
media specification, chapterization, tab insertion and document editing. This solution provides
centralized document assembly and reduces labor costs by automating document production,
including multiple finishing requirements in a set based on page numbers. Users can insert tabs
and specify mixed media from a single, integrated visual interface. Users can also easily merge
PDF pages with drag & drop PDF insertion. (Standard for both the EX 4100 and EX-P 4100.)
Fiery JobMaster
JobMaster provides enhanced composition and editing. This tool shows exactly how the output will
look before going to print, and provides tab insertion with a WYSIWYG preview. Users can also apply
page numbering and stamping, merge pages, de-skew and de-speckle scanned documents; and edit
images for brightness, contrast and sharpness. In addition, users can redefine crop and trim box sizes
and mask unwanted content such as pre-existing page numbers. The JobMaster tool includes Adobe
Acrobat Pro and Enfocus PitStop Edit to make last-minute changes to document content without
returning files to customers. (Optional for both the EX 4100 and EX-P 4100.)
In addition, a Filters for Hot Folders feature enhances the Fiery Hot Folder option for users by
enabling quick drag & drop job submission from PCs for these file types: CT/LW, TIFF/IT, EPS, PS, PDF,
DCS2, 1-bit TIFF, PDF2Go, ExportPS, JPEG, PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3 preflight.

The print servers deliver this high resolution data to the print engine using an improved high-speed
serial transmission technology. With the Ultra Smooth Gradient technology, an improved high-speed
image path carries data generated in the print server to the digital press without having to down-
sample the data before the transmission process. Image processing is then performed by the digital
press's image processing circuitry, and the image is finally printed with the VCSEL exposure system at
a resolution of 2400 x 2400 dpi x 1 dpi.
High Speed Serial Transmission from the Fiery Print Servers to the Print Engine. The native 1200 x 1200
RIP at the print server is 10 bits for the Fiery print servers.
To support the speed and image quality of the press, the high-speed serial transmission uses a
transmission speed of 8.5 Gbps (4.25 Gbps x 2 channels) for each color. This allows for an image path
with uncompressed native 1,200 dpi x 10 bit resolution data plus a screen control tag of 4 bits. In
addition to the higher RIP resolution and higher transmission speed, the GrayFont technology used in
the EX 4100 and EX-i 4100 Print Servers provides optimized edge thickness and definition for text and
graphics. The GrayFont technology also preserves a higher final resolution for fully saturated images
because they can be printed at the full resolution of the Raster Output Scanner (2400 x 2400 x 1. (A
fully saturated color is one in which there has been no tinting, shading, or toning. A tint is the mixture
of a color with white. A shade is the mixture of a color with black. A tone is the mixture of a color with
gray, or through both tinting and shading.)
GrayFont first rips saturated objects at 1200 x 1200 x 10 dpi. These objects are then down-sampled
and transmitted along the high-speed image path to the print engine, but special tags are added that
allow the print engine to reconstruct the 2,400 dpi image at print time. The tags essentially preserve
the information that was lost in the down-sampling step. The result is that even fine lines and very
small text retain a sharp, crisp appearance on the printed page.
Ultra HD Resolution reproduces finer detail, both in images and in text. In the close-up view, curved
lines reveal less jaggedness, giving letters and graphics smooth, clean accuracy. Advanced dot screen
and screen technologies provide color images with greater realism, eliminating moir' patterns and
edge distortion. Also, optimized outline processing makes color characters look thinner, cleaner, and

• Quick Access: Contains the most common print settings. Click Customize to add or delete settings
from the other tabs, so that this tab is used most of the time.
Be sure to explain to your customers that the Versant 4100 can maintain an Average Monthly Print
Volume of up to 250,000 prints and supports a Duty Cycle of 1.2 million prints. This productivity is
maintained even for heavy stocks, both coated and uncoated, up to 400 gsm.

The Versant 4100 Paper Path. The path uses over 50 sensors and switches
to intelligently control the paper transport. This path was enhanced and modified
to better transport extra-long sheets to support XLS printing.
The Versant 4100’s Compact Belt Fuser uses two heat rolls located inside the fusing belt. By using a
fusing belt with a low heat capacity, the belt can be heated using the minimum amount necessary for
toner fusing. Also, because of the large area of contact between the heat rolls and the fusing belt, the
The Versant 4100 features a newly-designed fusing pad which is now flat. The flat surface of the
fusing pad results in a larger nip area for contact with the paper during the fusing process. This has a
number of important benefits.
• First, pressure is applied more evenly, over a larger surface area as the toner is fused. As a result,
stress on the paper is reduced, and so is the likelihood of deformation in the paper. This is
particularly important for coated paper, which can sometimes blister in the fusing process.
The design of the Versant 4100’s Fuser Belt Assembly provides uniform heat and pressure, which
makes it possible for your customers to work with a wide variety of stocks up to 400 gsm, and at rated
speeds up to 100 ppm. Like so many of the innovations in the Versant 4100, the Compact Belt Fuser
simultaneously delivers more uptime and more performance while ensuring the image quality that
your customers demand.
If customers elect to switch assemblies for different width media, a Xerox® Customer Service Engineer
or a specially trained Technical Key Operator must perform the replacement procedure and attach a
short jumper cable to the fuser. The jumper cable remains attached to the additional fuser assembly
and helps define the media width to be used with that assembly. There are two jumpers that can be
used, one is Gray and the other is Black. Two additional fuser assemblies can be set up in additional to
the default fuser. In addition to the physical jumpers, there are administration software settings that
define the width range permissible for each jumper, as well as the default fuser with no jumper.
If other Fuser Belt Assemblies are used, in addition to the default assembly that comes with the press,
a System Administrator must change the NVM settings for the new fuser assemblies and their
jumpers when they are switched.
The jumpers and NVM settings have these default values, but they can be re-defined using different
NVM settings:
The default is Optimize for Speed. If customers are not satisfied with the image quality on a mixed
media job, they can change this setting to Optimize for Image Quality. The press will then print
slower, because the fuser makes more automatic temperature adjustments to the different paper
weights to improve the IQ.
The Versant 4100 has a new 3rd setting: Optimize for Speed for Mixed Weight Papers Above 300gsm:
This setting dramatically improves productivity whenever customers have heavyweight paper above
300 gsm in a mixed-media job. This setting prints faster than the Optimize for Speed setting with
mixed stock over 300 gsm, and will improve productivity. In summary, the three options for the
Versant 4100 are:
• Optimize for Speed – Prints mixed media at a fast rate with fewer fuser
temperature adjustments. This is the default setting.
• Optimize for Image Quality – Instructs the fuser to adjust its temperature to
maintain the best image quality when printing with mixed media.
• Optimize for Speed for Mixed Weight Papers Above 300gsm – You would use
this setting when at least some of the mixed stock in a job is above 300 gsm. This
provides the fastest speed when using mixed stock with some paper over 300
gsm.
Drum Cartridges
There is a Drum Cartridge for each toner color (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black). The Drum
Cartridge consists of a Drum, a Bias Charge Roll (BCR), and a Cleaning Assembly. The Bias Charge Roll
applies a uniform negative charge to the Drum.

Xerographic Components
The ROS laser diodes expose (discharge) the areas of the Drums where an image will appear. Toner is
attracted to the areas of the Drum where the ROS exposure occurs.

There are four Toner Cartridge assemblies, one each for yellow, magenta, cyan, and black.
The development system uses trickle development, which means that developer/toner is added at
specific intervals to the Developer Housing. Waste developer/toner is removed by an auger to the
Waste Toner Bottle on a continuous basis to keep the developer at optimum performance. This
increases the life of the developer.
Developer Housings
Each color has a Developer Housing located to the right of the Drum. The Developer Housing contains
a Magnetic Developer Roll and an inlet for developer/toner from the Toner Cartridges. There are two
augers in the Developer Housing; one to mix the material and one to remove the waste toner.

Developer bias voltage is applied to the Magnetic Developer Roll that enables the toner to be
attracted to the latent image on the Drum but not to the background areas.
The 2nd BTR applies a charge and physical pressure to the paper. This transfers the developed image
from the IBT Belt to the paper, and also moves the un-fused print forward to be transported to the
Fuser. The IBT Cleaner Assembly removes any remaining toner from the IBT Belt.
The Advanced Stock Setup tool lets operators quickly assign settings that automatically adjust the 2nd
Bias Transfer Roll for individual stocks. The adjustment corrects for mottle (uneven toner coverage)
and color shift (inconsistent color), and is particularly helpful for heavy-weight papers. Once created
for a stock, the adjustment is saved and can be assigned to the stock for automatic use or selected for
that stock for any tray. This gives the operator precise quality control for all jobs.
Fusing
Fusing is accomplished with a Compact Belt Fuser (see above), which is comprised of a seamless PFA
(polytetrafluoroethylene) Fuser Belt in contact with a traditional Pressure Roll. A Heat Pad, located

eliminating wear marks. There is a different jumper for each fuser so the system can recognize which
fuser has been installed in the press.
Note: The fuser can only be replaced by a specially trained operator. Xerox offers additional training
for customers who want the ability to replace fusers on their own.
With the advent of this new manufacturing process, toner ingredients no longer have to be limited to
materials that will withstand the pulverization step. The desired particle sizes can be controlled
scientifically, and created in higher yield than they could be by the conventional pulverization process.

One of the screening methods used widely in printing presses is Frequency Modulation (FM). FM
screens place halftone dots randomly, which can help prevent moiré patterns (patterns of regular
stripes) from appearing.
In the Versant 4100, the FM screen places halftone dots in a way that is geometrically optimal for
xerography. This placement significantly reduces the grainy appearance of images, and produces
superior overall results when compared to conventional FM screens. The result is smoother tonal
reproduction and more accurate reproduction of image details.

Setup
To check the status of press consumables, users press the Machine Status button and then select the
Supplies tab. The remaining life of the Toner is shown as a percentage.
The first page of the status information displays with the percentage of remaining life
for each consumable:
The Other Consumables window shows the status of Drum Cartridges, Waste Toner Container, Tray 6
and 7 Rolls, as well as consumables for any optional finishers that are configured with the press. Note
that the status of the Fuser and NOHAD Air Filter are not shown, but a message will display when
these items require replacing.
The Versant 4100 features an easy-to-use Control Panel for users to operate, monitor, and maintain
the press, regardless of skill or previous experience. All of the features and functions of the press are
displayed on a color touch screen that is located at the top-front of the print engine. Panel buttons
are clearly labeled and menus are easy-to-use with specially designed screens that are color-coded
and laid out efficiently for fast reading and simple feature selection.
1. Home button The Home button provides quick access to three sets of information: 1.) press
status via a Printer Mimic; 2.) the status of paper loaded in trays; and 3.) the
status of Supplies and Consumables.
2. Tools button Use for a variety of administrative functions including locating press
information, viewing billing meters, checking the status of consumables,
printing reports, and using press support tools.
3. Job Status button Checks the progress of active jobs and shows detailed information about
completed or pending jobs. Also allows user to delete a job (cancel printing)
and to pause jobs.
4. Machine Status Use to check the press configuration, the software version,
button the press billing meter and counter information, and to
access and print job history and error reports.
5. Touch Screen Directly touch the screen to select and set features. Displays
instructional and informational messages, fault
clearance procedures and general press information.
6. Log In/Log Out button Use to log in and out of Administrator Mode with user ID and password.
7. Language button Use to select a different language for the touch screen options.
8. Power Saver button Use this button if the press has been inactive and the touch screen is dark
(system is in Power Saver mode). This button manually returns the system to
normal operating mode. A job arriving from the print server will also
automatically cause the press to exit Power Saver mode.
9. Numeric Key Pad Use to enter alphanumeric data. The ‘C’ button (cancel entry) cancels the
previous entry made on the numeric keypad.
10. Cancel Entry button Use this button to cancel the previous entry made on the numeric keypad.
11. Clear All button Use this button to return all selections to the same state as when the press
was powered on. Press once to clear a current entry and press twice to return
to the default settings.
14. Press Status Lights Three indicator lights that identify that data transmission is in progress, the
press is experiencing an error, and the main power is on.
The upper-right of the Home screen shows users how they are logged on—either as a regular operator
(Guest / Local User) or Administrator. The Administrator logon has access to more options on the
Tools menu for setting system parameters, controlling access, and customizing screens.
Also, a message will display under the mimic to describe the nature of the problem.
If the problem is critical, the mimic displays a red X symbol near the area of the problem:
Trays 1, 2, and 3 are the trays built into the press, while Trays 6 and 7 are in a separate feeder, which
is included in the basic configuration. Tray 5 is the MSI tray, located on top of the separate feeder.
Tray T1 is the tray for the optional Inserter.
Each depiction of a tray shows the relative amount of paper in the tray with black lines. In addition,
the color of the tray indicates if it is empty (red), near empty (yellow), or sufficiently filled (Black).
The operator can touch the Information icon, and then select Other Consumables from the pull-
down menu to see the status of all other Consumables:

The down arrow opens the second page of the display. The Other Consumables window shows the
status of Drum Cartridges, Waste Toner Container, Tray 6 and 7 Rolls, as well as consumables for any
optional finishers that are configured with your press.
The Job Status button displays the status of currently active jobs and completed jobs. The display
shows one line of information for each job. Information includes the user who submitted the job, the
name of the job, the job’s status, and the completed time (if the job finished printing).
By selecting the line of information for a job, operators can see further details for the job such as the
quantity requested, number of pages, and paper tray used. From this job detail window, they can also
print a report of the information about the job.
The Machine Status button displays technical information about the press, as well as fault and billing
information. Operators can also use this screen to send diagnostic data to the Xerox Support Center.
The Maintenance Assistant window lets operators send diagnostic data to the Xerox Support Center.
The press does this automatically on a set schedule, but users may need to manually send this data
for troubleshooting purposes. The operator simply touches Send Smart eSolutions Data to Xerox to
begin the transmission. The process may take a few minutes, and a confirmation sheet will print after
the data is sent. Operators only need to use this option when asked by Xerox Support personnel.
The Faults tab shows a history of the faults that have occurred on the press. The information includes
a 6-digit code that identifies the fault, the date and time the fault occurred, and the image count at
the time of the fault.
Operators may be asked by a Xerox Support person to locate recent faults during problem-solving.
Xerox personnel have access to reference tables with corrective actions for the fault codes.
The Billing Information tab lets users see the total number of Color Impressions, the total number of
Black impressions, and the Total Impressions that have been printed. Total Impressions is the sum of
the Color and Black Impressions. These counts are a complete history from first use.
Touching the Usage Counters button and selecting All Usage Counters displays the details behind
the total counts shown on the top window.
Users access the Tools menu for performing Full Width Array Density Uniformity Adjustment,
Cleaning the Fuser Assembly and changing the Billing Impression Mode. Two of these tools can be
used to easily improve image quality, when issues are identified with images on prints. There are
three options for operators from the Tools menu:
Users that have logged on as Administrators have access to a large number of setup
and control functions for the press. As with the operator, these are accessed by
pressing the Tools button on the Control Panel—however, there are many more
functions for the Administrator. There are four basic categories of functions:
• System Settings
• Setup
• Accounting
(Not used for the Versant 4100 Press)
• Authentication / Security Settings
For each of these main categories, there is a Group of settings, and for each Group there
is an additional set of Features:

PredictPrint Media Manager is an enhanced media solution for Xerox Production Presses—an
integrated media solution that enables operators to quickly and accurately use a hand-held scanner
and on-screen Wizard to:
• Quickly program trays with specific stock properties for a job
• Perform any press adjustments needed to optimize printing for the selected stock
• Complete calibration and profiling for the stock to maximize image quality and color output
The process is initiated by simply scanning a barcode for the stock to be used. After scanning, the
operator is guided by a Wizard through a series of setups—many of which are automatic. The Wizard
guides operators painlessly through basic and advanced setups to optimize printing performance
while eliminating errors and reducing associated waste.
What is the value of PredictPrint Media Manager? The benefits are numerous for both customers
and Xerox. You can emphasize these benefits when selling the Versant 4100:

These three components work in concert to automatically load the stock properties for a job along
with performing any needed press setpoints and setups to tune the print engine to the specific stock
being used. This is all initiated with a simple barcode scan.
The PredictPrint Application and Wizard run on the Fiery Print Server to enable operators to scan
stock barcodes to download stock attributes and stock setups from the Cloud Server. The setup data
for each stock is determined by the Cloud Server using advanced algorithms and a world-wide
database of performance data for all Versant presses.
Following the stock’s barcode scan, the Cloud Server delivers the specific attributes for the stock
to instantly assign the stock to a press tray. In addition, the Cloud Server delivers any important
Setpoints and Setups for print engine settings for the stock.
A Setpoint is a specific print engine setting that delivers the best performance for the scanned stock.
For example it could be a higher fuser temperature, or a change to the Aligner Roll Pressure. When
downloaded after the scan, Setpoints are applied instantly with no operator actions needed, because
the Cloud has determined that these settings are required.
A Setup is a recommendation to determine the best setting for a stock using test prints. In this case
the Cloud intelligence does not want to deliver a specific setpoint, but has determined that it is best
for the operator or the Full Width Array in-line scanner to look as some test prints to possibly adjust a
setting. Setups do have operator actions. The Wizard walks you through the steps.
Both Setpoints and Setup adjustments are made to the Advanced Settings for a stock. This means
that after the Wizard process is complete, an operator can go to the Stock Library to select the stock
and click on the Advanced Setup button to see what values have been changed.
In addition to Stock Attributes, Setpoints and Setups, the Wizard also performs Calibration and
Profiling as needed. Calibration and Profiling data are stored on the Fiery Print Server and not in the
Advanced Settings for a stock.

• Trays – Select Trays to view all currently loaded stocks and assign new stocks to trays when not
using the Wizard.
• Profiles – When not using the Profiles function in the Wizard, you can create custom Alignment
Profiles for stocks using this function. You can also create Fold Adjustment Profiles to
automatically adjust the fold and staple positions for documents.
• Stock Library – This library contains downloads of stocks and their information from the Cloud
Server, as well as local custom stocks not resident in the Cloud. It provides an efficient way to
organize and assign stocks when printing while avoiding redundancy.
• Administration – Select this function to turn On or Off the Wizard and set default parameters
for the guided stock setup process.
• Stock Wizard – Select the Stock Wizard to scan a stock for use with a job or to create a barcode
for a stock for future use.
Note that a stock may have several bar codes, for example, a ream barcode, a box barcode,
and a wrapper barcode. The server database will link all of these barcodes together, so that
if you scan any one of these barcodes the system will know it’s the same stock.
After loading and scanning, the Wizard opens on the Fiery Print Server with instructions
on how to continue. Operators simply follow the steps on the screen.
Often, few setups are required, and the Wizard takes only seconds to complete. For stocks that have
not performed as well as others, there may be more setups, and the process could take a few minutes.
The need for performing Calibration and Profiling is different from the other setups. Calibration for a
stock will automatically occur after 7 days passes from the last time it was performed. The 7-day limit
is set on the Fiery Print Server, and can be changed if another time period if preferred. Profiling for a
stock automatically occurs within the Wizard the first time the stock is setup for use. After that first
setup, it is not performed again within the Wizard, but can be manually performed outside the
Wizard.
There is a useful option to view or print instructions for the Semi-Auto setups. To view them, click the
Get Instructions button, and to print them, right-click on the instructions when they open and select
Print.
In the future, whenever you load a stock for which Manual setups were required by the Wizard, a
yellow caution triangle will display next to the tray in the Trays View. This is a reminder to check that
the printing does not reflect issues associated with the Manual setups that were previously identified.
• Private stock sharing – Create a 4-digit code to be used with other printshops in your company,
so that all locations can share custom stocks and their barcodes.
• Stock wizard timeout – Amount of time after a tray is opened or the Wizard is selected before
the function will automatically close if a stock is not scanned. Can be set to 1, 2, or 5 minutes
or 10, 20, or 30 seconds. The default is 1 minute.
• PredictPrint database – Click Load database from device to browse to the location of files on
a flash drive—files that have been previously downloaded to the drive from the Cloud Server.
This feature enables a set of stock listings to be transferred from the Cloud Server to the local
Stock Library when there is no Internet connection from the local Fiery server to the Cloud Server.
The following settings are on the System tab within PredictPrint Administration:
• Automatic administrator logoff – Turn On or Off and set a time limit for inactivity in
Administration before system will automatically log out of Administration mode.
• Tray stock properties window timeout – Determines if Tray Properties window remains open
until manually closed, or automatically closes after the set amount of time.
• Restrict operator stock library access – Removes the Stock Library function from the main
window
for operator log on.
• Date format – Select date format in the form of mm/dd/yyyy, dd/mm/yyyy or yyyy/mm/dd.
• IP address / host name, Community name, and Port number – These settings are used to
configure the location of the Fiery DFE and should not be changed.
You can change the default setting of 7 days for Calibration, if you want to use more or less time
between stock calibrations. This is done by going to the Control Center and under General,
selecting Tools and Calibrator. Then you must click the small gear icon at the bottom of the
page.
Clicking the gear icon opens a window to set the time passed since the last calibration, before
a new one is required. On a Fiery Server without PredictPrint, this setting will initiate an operator
notification. When PredictPrint is installed, it triggers the process within the Wizard for a selected
stock.
Once created, the PredictPrint Profile will override all other profiles. You don’t need to use other
profiles, but if you want to use another profile, you must open the Paper Catalog after scanning, but
before printing, to create a new link. PredictPrint Profiles always have an MMX extension.
Each stock has a place in the Stock Library where you can set a local evaluation of the performance
of the stock. This subjective valuation for each stock is called “My Ratings”.
This rating lets you set your own valuation for stocks. It is not seen directly by other customers,
and can be seen and changed only by operators at your press.
To Download the Stock List – This is a bulk download of the entire stock list. After requesting a
Download, the user must select the Printer Family (Versant). The next step is to select the location
of the removable media on the computer you are using. This bulk load is generally not recommended,
because individual scans also download to the Stock Library. However, customers can use this feature
in the unlikely event that the Fiery Print Server loses Internet connectivity with the Cloud Server.
To Get a New Barcode – Without Internet connectivity, an operator can get a new barcode assigned
to a custom brown-wrapper stock. The operator starts the process from the Wizard by copying the
Stock File to a thumb drive or other portable media. Then, they upload the Stock File to the Cloud
Server after which the Cloud Server then delivers the setups and Barcode back to the USB for
manually loading back into the Wizard. This workflow should rarely, if ever, have to be used, but it is
built into the Wizard in case it is needed.. For all steps, the operator is guided with easy-to-follow
directions in the Wizard.
The Stock Library contains two primary sections, shown as tables—the All Media list and the Stock
Library list. Operators generally use the Stock Library to create new stocks and to print a stock’s
barcode to use for scanning when setting up jobs.

When working in the library, you generally select a stock first and then click one of the icons used
for the main Stock Library functions, as shown above.
2. In the All Media area, click the Create New (+) icon.
3. Complete the New Stock Setup by entering Name (or accept the default name provided by
system), Media Name of your choice, Size, etc.
4. Optionally select Advanced Setup if you need to make any advanced print engine adjustments
for the stock.
5. Click OK.
7. Click the icon for Add to Stock Library (it is the last button on the right of the icons).

The tray is now programmed with the properties of the new stock and ready to print after the paper
is loaded.
Advanced Stock Setup is accessed from the Stock Properties window for a stock.
Most of the settings and adjustments in Advanced Setup for a stock are automatically maintained
when you scan a stock for printing using the PredictPrint Wizard. However, for stocks that are not
being scanned (not in the Cloud Server database), and for special issues with problem stocks, you may
need to occasionally adjust these settings manually. You may also have to adjust them if they are
listed by the PredictPrint Wizard as a Manual setup that is required.
Advanced Setup lets you set two general parameters for a stock:
• Stock By Name Only turns off automatic selection of a stock by matching a job with the stock’s
properties and requires that the stock be selected by its name. This is useful for preventing
expensive or specialty stocks from being unintentionally used. When this option is unchecked,
stocks are selected from the print server or from a print driver by matching attributes (such as
weight, type, and coating). Stock names also are examined, but are not used exclusively.
• Multifeed Detection instructs the press to detect and report for this stock when multiple sheets
are feed from the trays. Use this option only with the Advanced High Capacity Feeder - Trays 6 and
7 and trays 8 and 9. It does not work with Trays 1-3. When this option is unchecked, the press
ignores any multiple sheets that feed through the paper path. Uncheck this option only as a
temporary measure to allow users to continue their printing until a service representative resolves
the problem.
• Tray Air Assist switches the paper tray fans off and on to eliminate misfeeds and paper jams.
You can also select options to lower the air volume to reduce the fluff effect on the paper.
• Enable Tray Heater turns on a heater in the tray. This option works in conjunction with the Tray
Air Assist setting. The heater maintains the appropriate internal temperature of the paper tray.
Depending on the external temperature and humidity, the heater also sends information to the
tray blowers. The paper tray blowers then switch on and provide the required air to the paper
stack, to prevent multifeeds or misfeeds from occurring.
• Aligner Roll Pressure corrects slipping and skewing of the image. This setting is also used with
some light-weight or heavy-weight paper stocks that require less or more roll pressure to avoid
edge damage. Increasing the roll pressure for some faults, may help you to postpone a service
call. However, you may want to call your service representative as soon as possible in to restore
the machine to its full feeding capabilities. The Aligner Roll Pressure option is used in conjunction
with
the Pre Gate Roll Adjustment option. Before using Aligner Roll Pressure, you must first switch on
the Pre Gate Roll Adjustment.
• Regi-Loop lets you correct skew that may occur in the lead direction of the sheet as it is being fed
through the paper path. Adjusting the loop varies the amount of paper buckle against the
registration gate, and thereby optimizes the correction of lead skew. If the variation of lead skew
is large, then increase the loop amount in the plus (+) direction. If buckling occurs with thin paper
in environments with high temperature and high humidity, then reduce the amount of loop in the
minus (-) direction. Regi-Loop is used in conjunction with Alignment Profile. Before using the Regi-
Loop, first use the Alignment feature. If adjusting the alignment is unsuccessful, then adjust the
Regi-Loop setting.
• Pre-Gate Roll Adjustment lets you adjust the roll nip pressure. You can use the System Default,
turn on custom settings, or turn off the option to use no nip setting.
• Test Print – Use this option to create test prints for visual inspection after making any Advanced
Stock Setup changes.
• Paper Curl Correction adjusts unwanted up or down curl to maintain flat sheets for finishing.
To make an adjustment, select a setting for the side-orientation. For details on making custom
settings, see the Paper Curl Correction section in the Stock Library Manager Guide.
• Fold Adjustment Profile lets you select a pre-set profile for paper folds for a particular stock
when you have an optional Standard or Booklet Maker Finisher with the C/Z Folder Module. If
• Alignment Profile lets you select the system default profile or a specific profile that was created
and saved using the Profiles feature (available from the main window on PredictPrint). Specific
profiles can be created to correct Lead and Side Registration, Perpendicularity, Skew, and
Magnification Height. If you need to make these adjustments to the way the image is oriented
on the page, first create the profile using the Profiles tool, and then assign the profile to the stock
in Advanced Stock Setup.
• Fuser Temperature Adjustment lets you adjust the fuser temperature for specific media types.
Under most conditions, the fuser temperature is adjusted automatically by the press. However,
on infrequent occasions you may need to make small adjustments to the fuser temperature for
specific stock weights or a specific job flow. For example, if the printed output shows signs of
offset or flaking dry ink. This may be caused by the specific media (such as coated or silk media),
and the fuser temperature may be too low or too high. The temperature of the fuser can be
adjusted within a range of -10° to +10° Celsius (14° - 50° Fahrenheit). The default setting is 0
(zero). Changing the default setting should be considered a temporary solution because
environmental conditions vary from day to day. Upon completion of the print job, you should
return the temperature setting to its default setting (0).
• Fuser Speed Adjustment lets you adjust the fuser speed to remedy a smear on the output at 208
mm from the lead edge. The smear is caused by a speed mismatch between the lead edge of the
paper in the nip and the middle of the paper in the Second Transfer nip. Try increasing the speed
by + 2 or 3%.
• Adjustment of Paper Speed at Transfer - In the press, the distance between the Second Transfer
and Fuser is very small. When feeding large paper sizes, the paper is nipped (gripped)
simultaneously by both the Second Transfer and Fuser. Occasionally, the paper is pulled between
the Second Transfer and Fuser, which may cause paper damage or image defect. When you see
this problem, use this setting to make very small adjustments to help feed paper through the
Second Transfer and Fuser areas without damage or defects. The adjustment amounts range
from -0.50% to a maximum of 0.50%. The default is 0 (zero).
• Transfer output adjustment for trail edge lets you correct for a black band that can occur
at the trail edge when printing on heavyweight paper. This option raises or lowers the transfer
voltage timing to the 2nd Bias Transfer Roll. The default setting is 100% Try reducing in 10%
increments to resolve this problem.
• Secondary Voltage Transfer Adjustment corrects for mottle (uneven toner coverage) and
color shift (inconsistent color). Also corrects trail edge deletion and improves image transfer
for textured/linen stocks. For details on making settings, see the Secondary Voltage Transfer
Adjustment section in Module 8 Troubleshooting in this training guide.
• Primary Transfer Current Adjustment corrects for black line smears at the lead edge area of
the output. The smears occur about 10 mm from the lead edge. Black smears are corrected by
increasing the current for the Black setting. Other image quality problems such as ghosting can
be corrected for Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow by adjusting the current for these settings.
• When a profile is selected, the stock will automatically have the settings
in the profile applied to it.
• Profiles are used for stocks that require special handling such
as lightweight or heavyweight papers.
• You can set Alignment Profiles for either an individual stock or a specific tray on the Tray Stock
Properties window.
Applying a pre-set profile to a difficult stock can avoid known problems and ensure optimum image
and output quality. You can create profiles for:
• Image Alignment – This type of profile is the same Alignment profile that is created by the
Wizard, when needed for a stock. In general you should allow the Wizard to manage Alignment
Profiles. However, you will need to use this Profiles function, outside the Wizard, when working
with custom stocks that are not in the Cloud Server. Also, you may want to use it to correct for
a tray issue on a feeder. In this case, you would create the profile and assign it to the tray.
• Fold Adjustment (if an optional Booklet Maker or C/Z Folder Module is configured with the press)
– The Fold Adjustment Profile adjusts the exact location of folds in a document or booklet, and
will also optionally adjust the staple position. The Fold Adjustment Profile can also be used to
adjust trim amounts for Bi-Fold Single Sheet, Bi-Fold Multiple Sheet, and Bi-Fold Multiple Sheets
Stapled—when you have a 2 Sided Trimmer Module.
When the position of the output image on a page is misaligned or skewed, you can create an
Alignment Profile to adjust the image for a particular stock or tray. You only need to do this for
local custom stocks that are not in the Cloud database, and for which the Wizard is not being
used. When the Wizard is used for a stock, this adjustment will automatically be made, if it is
needed.
For Alignment Profiles, you can set up to four types of position adjustments for the print image
on the page:
• Perpendicularity Adjustment
• Skew Adjustment
Image to Media Alignment ensures correct positioning of the print image on paper and is important
for calibrating new media:
• The press runs grid test patterns that are measured by the Full Width Array assembly.
• Full Width Array scans the grid marks on both sides of pages to determine if adjustments are
required.
• Without the Full Width Array, the process involves repeatedly printing targets, physically
measuring them and manually inputting data. The PredictPrint Wizard and the Full Width Array
save time in creating and applying these profiles.
The Fold Adjustment Profile feature is available when the press is connected to an optional finisher
with a booklet maker, or when the press is connected to an optional finisher with a C/Z Folder.
When edges of a fold do not line up evenly for a certain stock, a Fold Adjustment Profile can be
created to correct the fold mis-alignment on that stock when you use it. You can also use this type
of profile to adjust the position of staples that are not correctly positioned on the booklet fold.
A Bi-Fold has one fold that creates two panels to the output. The edges should be even, so when one
side or the other is longer when folding a particular paper, you can create a profile to adjust the
output.
When creating a Bi-Fold profile, you must measure the offset distance A, select which side is longer
and set the distance using up and down arrows for the “A” Length window on the Fold Adjustment
tab.
When creating the Bi-Fold profile for multiple sheets with staples, you must measure the offset
distances A and B, select which side is longer and set the distances using up and down arrows for the
“A” Length window and the “B” Length window on the Fold Adjustment tab.
C-Fold Adjustments
C-Folds have two folds that create three panels to the output.
To create a profile for a C-Fold, measure the offset distances for A and B, and enter the values using
the up and down arrows for the “A” Length window and the “B” Length window on the Fold
Adjustment tab.
Z-Folds have two folds that are folded in opposite directions, resulting in a type of fan fold.
To create a profile for a Z-Fold, measure the offsets for A and B, and enter the values using the up
and down arrows for the “A” Length window and the “B” Length window on the Fold Adjustment tab.
As with a regular Z-Fold, the Z-Fold Half Sheet has two folds in opposite directions. The difference is
that the Z-Fold Half Sheet is not folded in two equal folds. The two folds are unequal and this allows
one side of the Z-Fold Half Sheet to be longer. The longer side is used for stapling or hole punching.
To create a profile for a Z-Fold Half Sheet, measure the distances A and B, and enter the values using
the up and down arrows for the “A” Length window and the “B” Length window on the Fold
Adjustment tab.
Operators first perform adjustments separately for a small set of sheets (Set 1) and again for a large
set of sheets (Set 2). The system then calculate and automatically uses the required adjustments for
booklets that vary in size between Set 1 and Set 2. The paper weight for the booklet stock is
important when creating the profile, because the number of sheets used in these sets will vary based
on the paper weight selected.
Note: This procedure adjusts the staple position horizontally on the paper and ensures that the
booklet staples lie precisely on the fold, and not off the fold. It does not enable you to move the
staples up or down on the fold. A Customer Service Engineer must make vertical adjustments for
staple positions on the fold.
Customers can run 52 - 256 gsm from the three standard paper trays. The MSI (Multi-sheet Inserter)
or Tray 5 extends this range to 400 gsm, and can be used for feeding special sized stocks such as
envelopes and extra-long sheets. The optional Advanced High Capacity Feeder and the optional High
Capacity XLS Vacuum Feeder both support the widest stock range of 52 – 400 gsm (uncoated and
coated).
Note: The Decurler is important for running lighter-weight papers. If output is curled, customers can
make an adjustment with the simple touch of a button on the Interface Module Control Panel.
Printing Extra Long Sheets (XLS) from the optional High Capacity XLS Vacuum Feeder
In addition to using the MSI for printing Extra
Long Sheets (XLS), customers can also print extra-
long sheets from the optional High Capacity XLS
Vacuum Feeder. The High Capacity XLS Vacuum
Feeder is an optional feeding solution like the
Advanced High-Capacity Feeder, except the top
tray is specially-designed to feed extra-long
sheets (XLS) up to 47.2” (1.2 meters) in length.
In addition, all trays use new feeding design
with state-of-the-art vacuum-feeding technology
instead of roll or belt-feeding components.
With the exception of the MSI on top of the unit, each tray features a vacuum Shuttle Head, Air Knife,
and five Blowers that all work together to deliver individual sheets to the press without mis-feeds or
multi-feeds. This technology minimizes friction when picking up and feeding sheets and is much
superior to belt-feed systems.

Envelopes • The press supports Monarch (SEF), #10 (SEF), C4 (SEF or LEF), and C5 (SEF
or LEF) envelopes. Other envelopes can be used, and feeding is determined

• The recommended tray for printing envelopes is the MSI Tray – Tray 5, or
one of the trays in the Advanced High Capacity Feeder using the Tray
Inserter. Also, the optional High Capacity XLS Vacuum Feeder can print
envelopes from its MSI tray and from its standard tray (not the XLS Tray).
Recommended capacity is 30-40 envelopes.
• Capacity may vary based on envelope type and manufacturer, and can be
increased using the optional Envelope Support Kit.
Drilled Stock • Paper with punched holes can be used in all trays.
• Drilled Stock can be loaded either long edge or short edge feed.
Extra-Long • Print XLS up to 13.00 x 26.00” (330.2 x 660.4 mm) from Tray 5 (MSI),
Sheets (XLS) Simplex only, output to a Top Tray. (See caveats listed above in Section
3.8.1.)
• Using the High Capacity XLS Vacuum Feeder, print Duplex up to 34”
(864 mm) and Simplex up to 47.2” (1.2 m). When printing Simplex,
the maximum length depends on the weight of the paper:

Transparencies
When Transparency is selected as a media type, the press automatically changes several parameters
in order to correctly fuse toner onto the transparencies. These settings include the fuser temperature
and the process speed. If the operator neglects to select Transparency for the media, and runs
transparencies, machine damage could occur. To prevent this from happening, the Versant 4100 uses
a Transparency Sensor located just before the Registration Rolls. This sensor will detect the presence
of transparencies and stop the print process if the correct media selection has not been made.
Internal Trays 1, 2, 3
Trays 1, 2, and 3 are identical and can be loaded with the same paper or different paper. Each tray
has a capacity of 550 sheets of 20 lb / 75 gsm paper. Stock can be LEF (Long Edge Feed) or SEF (Short
Edge Feed).
• Three internal paper trays, hold 550 sheets each and feed coated and uncoated stocks,
sizes 5.5" × 7.2“(140 × 182 mm) up to 13.0" × 19.21“ (330.2 × 488 mm); weight up to 256 gsm
• Recommended paper weight range for internal trays is 52 -256 gsm
• Trays contain icons to aid operators in orienting sheets in the right position. In addition, the levers
are easy to move and adjust to the paper size when changing stock
The Paper Trays are all equipped with a positive latching mechanism that secures the trays into
position when closed to prevent accidental opening during operation. A handle on the front of the
tray lifts two latch pawls on either side of the tray so that the tray can be pulled out.
The Paper Trays can be easily adjusted for the various paper sizes by positioning the paper guides in
the trays. The press has built-in intelligence to sense the size and weight of the paper that’s placed in
the tray.
Tray 5 (MSI)
Tray 5 is located on top of the Advanced High Capacity
Feeder (see to right). This tray enables feeding of special
stock such as heavy-weight media, envelopes, and small sizes
down to 3.86 x 5.75” (98 x 146 mm). This tray also handles
standard paper stock and sizes.

When paper is placed in Tray 5, the lead edge is placed against the gate. This actuates the Tray 5
Paper Set Sensor and signals the control logic that paper is present. When the Feeder assembly is
lowered into position, the Tray 5 No Paper Sensor actuator will rest on top of the paper stack and the
sensor is then actuated. This informs the control logic that the tray has paper. When the last sheet of
paper is fed from the tray, the actuator drops through the opening of the tray and de-actuates.
The Tray 5 Size Sensor detects paper width only. Paper length is calculated by timing the lead and
trail edge of the paper as it is fed out of Tray 5. The operator can select Auto Size Detect or input
the paper size manually.
A second Advanced Oversized High Capacity Feeder can optionally be added to the system to extend
the feeding capacities by providing two additional trays. This second, chained feeder is referred to as
Trays 8 and 9, and it features the same capacity as a single unit. The dual configuration provides a
total of 8,000 sheets of 90 gsm paper in 4 trays.

The Versant 4100 supports a wide range of inline finishing options for superior overall print shop

Interface The IDM connects the print engine with other inline finishing units.
Decurler This module controls the exit height of the paper, and enables the
Module press to communicate with the down-line finishing modules. The
(IDM) IDM also contains a Cooling Unit to cool the paper and a Decurler
to ensure flat sheet output.
The Decurler has both upper and lower Decurler rolls that apply
pressure to the media. Based on the paper curl settings, the
Decurler routes the paper to either the up-curl path, or the down-
curl path. Pressure is applied independently to the upward and
downward Decurler arms. From the Decurler, the print media is
cooled and then routed to the optional finishing device next in-line
with the print engine. An easy-to-use panel on the top of the
module lets users adjust de-curl settings, if needed for special
media.

If booklet production is important to a customer, you may be asked questions about the smallest
and largest size booklets that can be produced on the Versant 4100. The customer must load a
certain size paper in the press, and set specific trim amounts at the print server for both the Crease
and Two-Sided Trimmer and the SquareFold Trimmer to create the full bleed.
It’s worth repeating. First, listen. Listening well is one of the hallmarks of Xerox’s reputation, and it is
indispensable to providing a world-class procurement experience for your clients. Listening means
that you aren’t presenting. It means you’re having an open dialog, asking questions and defining

I also want to point out that there are other Full Width Array adjustments that are automated on the
Versant 4100 and not supported by other manufacturers. These other adjustments which keep the
press output at superb quality – and therefore your customers happy -- are Density Uniformity, Image
Alignment, and Image Transfer Adjustment. Density Uniformity adjustments require a service call on
most other machines, and Image Alignment adjustments are not automated after initiation, as they
are on the Versant 4100.”

The Versant 4100 is engineered to appeal to several primary markets including In-Plant Providers and
Commercial or Print for Pay Businesses.
Overview
In-plant print providers and central reprographics shops serve larger commercial, government, and
educational organizations. Their primary customers tend to be internal. Secondary customers are
external recipients of marketing, training, and branded company materials.
• In-plant printing is often thought to be more cost-effective than outsourcing, and the very
existence of the print facility is a function of belt-tightening. In-plant budgets are typically tight,
and there is a great emphasis on cost-cutting, careful forecasting, and operational cost
management. This also has the effect of increasing the focus on the print shop, which is expected
to produce commercial quality results on time, and at lower cost than commercial alternatives.
• In-plant staff will typically consist of 13-15 full and part-time personnel to manage the press,
vendor relationships, and internal shipping and receiving workflows.
• In-plant shops are frequently called upon to produce (and protect) documents with highly
sensitive data. Data security is frequently of paramount importance.
• Older technology can mean higher operational costs and slower turnaround times. The shop must
constantly battle the reputation among customers who are familiar with commercial print shops
that the in-plant press is comparatively slow and expensive.
• Management keeps the print shop on a tight budgetary and oversight leash, and often has little
understanding of the challenges of meeting deadlines and quality expectations with limited
resources. The In-plant shop is not really viewed as strategically relevant to the overall objectives
and goals of the company.
• Xerox may be viewed as expensive, with maintenance arrangements that no longer seem
competitive.
• As a result, the customer may be unfamiliar with current offerings, and may not have an active
relationship with a Xerox account executive.

Overview
The Commercial Print-for Pay business is a high-volume, low-margin enterprise that must be highly
efficient and responsive in order to thrive. Customers submit short-run, quick-turn jobs, and demand
extremely high imaging and finishing quality.
• There is little loyalty in commercial printing—it’s always about price, and it’s always about
turnaround time. There is never a guarantee that one well-done job will bring in another from the
same client.
• Small shops must be highly attentive to financial and operational concerns because margins are
thin, and smaller, short-run jobs are more susceptible to financial irregularities such as non-
payment.
• Staffs are typically small and overworked, with frequent requirements to work nights and
weekends, or double shifts.
Obstacles to Success
• Price pressure is constant. Price is often the only variable to work with in trying to win business.
• Competitive differentiation is extremely difficult. Offset printing will always be cheaper in volume,
and it offers the highest possible image quality. That leaves turnaround time as the most
important differentiator, along with the ability to approximate offset quality.
• Traditional digital printing does not offer the economies of scale and the wide media latitude
enjoyed by an offset press.
• Printers who are heavily focused on the financials and business metrics can sometimes give short
shrift to real differences in presses. Speed and IQ are sometimes thought to represent a
distinction without a difference.
• More Revenue: The press needs to help grow the business in existing markets, and offer
opportunities to enter new markets.
• More Strategic Value: The press isn’t just an expense, it’s an investment. It needs to be a
strategic investment that will deliver profit long term.
• Automated Workflow Solutions: The press needs to be part of an overall business solution that
includes pre-press applications, efficient job routing, web customer interface, internet job
submission and personalized printing with variable data workflows. These web-to-print services

When working with your customers to determine the right press for their business, consider more than
just the price of the machine. You should also fold into your price calculations the click charges for the
presses being considered, as well as the Customer Service plans for each machine. These four factors
– base price, extended price based on system options, click charges, and service plan – all determine
the impact to your customers’ budget.
• PredictPrint Media Manager and Wizard: Enables operators to quickly and accurately use a
handheld scanner to assign paper to trays for a job, perform print engine adjustments to optimize
print performance, and complete Calibration and Profiling for the stock to maximize image
quality and color output. After scanning, print engine setpoints and recommended setups are
instantly downloaded from the Xerox Cloud Server that uses AI (artificial intelligence) to pinpoint

The single most important point to emphasize is that the Versant 4100 is more than just an
extremely capable machine—it is the cornerstone of an entire suite of integrated solutions that are

The Versant 4100 includes a paper Decurler as standard equipment strategically placed in the paper
path right after the fuser in the print engine. This means that paper is decurled before it enters the
duplexer. In addition to the Decurler in the print engine, there are also Decurlers in the Interface
Decurler Module and some of the finishers. These additional Decurlers provide even more control on
the Versant 4100 to deliver perfectly flat sheets for optimum finishing. Customers can easily create
Custom Paper Settings that automatically assign Decurler settings to individual stocks and apply
them automatically whenever the stock is used. Once created, operators can also select or change the
assigned settings right at the print server through the Paper Catalog.
This automated technology delivers a stabilized paper transport, and far fewer curl-induced jams than

File Processing
When a job is released from a queue, it must be first processed by the print server before being sent
to the press. The print server interprets the print job file (for example, PostScript or PCL) and then RIPs
or rasterizes the file. After the data in the file is transformed into raster images, the print server sends
the job to the press for printing.
Job Submission
A print server can receive print files from many different sources. Jobs can be submitted from
computers on the customer’s network, dropped into hot folders on personal computers, submitted
over the internet, or loaded at the print server via a CD or USB drive. In all cases, it is the initial job of
the print server to receive and temporarily store the file to be printed.
Queue Management. A print server routes the submitted jobs to queues. The queue serves to hold
the job while it waits for the printer to become available, or for an operator to release it for printing.
As a job enters a queue, pre-defined properties are applied to the job automatically so that operator
intervention is not required. Properties include, for example, the stock to print on, the layout or
imposition of the images, the finishing to be applied to the printed sets, and the number of copies.
These parameters and many more can be set to be automatically applied to all jobs submitted to a
particular queue. And dozens or even hundreds of queues can be created to manage the workflow in
the print shop.
Increased speed The faster processing speed of a print server moves even the most complex data
to print engines faster, so they seldom need to cycle down. This keeps print
engines continuously running for higher production efficiency and increases the
system’s capacity to produce more jobs, and generate higher profit for your
customer’s business.
Centralized Job In a production environment, operators need capabilities far beyond print driver
Management workflows. With a print server, they have the ability to view and manage the
press status as well as all the jobs in print queues. An intuitive user interface
displays all local or remote presses from a single location.
Job management features give print operators the flexibility to alter aspects of
the workflow. For example, they can quickly change the properties for a job, such
as the stock used, the number of sets to be printed, the layout of the images, or
the color of images. They can also add covers or inserts, and edit and reprint
completed jobs.
The print server manages the large variety of stocks that the press is able to
handle using a Paper Catalog that permits users to define and save media
definitions for each stock. This simplifies media selection at job submission time,
and reduces both the number of manual steps, and material waste from incorrect
media usage.
Automated Production facilities can increase efficiency and reduce errors with workflow-
Workflows automation features. The job submission process can be automated for batch
processing, or for processing work with the same properties using hot folders. By
simply submitting a job to a particular print server queue, the user can
automatically apply dozens of print properties and options. In addition,
properties for certain types of jobs can be saved and reapplied to other similar
jobs.
Control of Color Print servers provide default settings that maximize performance, while offering
and Image Quality the best color quality right out of the box. Print servers also provide manual
controls for all aspects of color management. These include advanced tools to
preview output and troubleshoot digital print jobs, create ICC profiles for more
accurate color transformations and corrections, match spot colors, perform color
quality assurance, and match color across multiple printers or presses. Xerox print
servers include licensed PANTONE PLUS SERIES and PANTONE FASHION + HOME
libraries.
Support for In addition to standard print files, print servers provide support for complex data

Print Perfect PDFs The Versant 4100 print servers support and guarantee full compliance with
PDF/x-4 standard to reproduce transparencies, overprints and multiple color
spaces, preserving the designer’s intent. The print servers can also process jobs
with Adobe PDF Print Engine, which optimizes the output for PDF files.
Make Ready The Versant 4100 print servers include a wide range of make-ready capabilities
Capabilities to prepare a job for printing and enable service providers to offer high-margin
services. Operators can use print server tools to create booklets with one of the
imposition templates included, or create their own imposition templates using
helpful displays. They can also customize the trim and fold marks. Operators can
add or delete pages, include tabs, assign media, add Duplo bar codes and define
finishing options. Users can also clean up scanned pages, mask unwanted marks,
make last-minute text edits, add page numbering and use a simple drag-and-
drop function to merge PDF pages.
Integration with The Versant 4100 print servers seamlessly integrate Xerox FreeFlow Core – a
Xerox Applications suite of workflow enhancements that automates job submission, prepress file
and Finishers preparation, variable data setup for personalized printing, job routing for
optimum press utilization across the shop, and automated booklet finishing.
These options dramatically increase productivity and reduce waste by providing a
total solution for automated print production―a solution that can include web-
to-print efficiency and JDF/JMF connectivity to external systems.
Support for JDF Job Definition Format, or JDF, is a universal job ticket format—a technical
(Job Definition standard developed by the graphic arts industry to help with workflow
Format) implementations and job ticketing. It uses XML to describe print jobs in terms of
their intent, or plan, as well as the processes needed to create them. As a
standard “language” for automated printing workflows, JDF and JMF (Job
Messaging Format) have a strong presence in offset printing shops. This
technology, available on the Xerox print servers, provides for more integrated
workflows with other systems and improved end-user support by passing on print
server information. This also gives Xerox an additional tool to integrate digital
monochrome and full-color printing solutions into offset environments where
customers already have JDF/JMF facilities and workflows.
Options to Grow Software options expand the power of print servers, providing solutions for every
stage in the print production process. These modular products broaden server
functionality for more advanced color management, and automation. Customers
can choose what they need now, and add more to adapt to changing business
demands.
Eco-Friendly Users can also reduce cost and be eco-friendly by reducing paper usage by up to
85% using features that let them easily print multiple pages on one sheet of
paper.
With the EFI print server, the RIP resolution is 1,200 x 1,200 x 10. This means that there are 1,200
dots per inch horizontally by 1,200 dots per inch vertically by 10 bits per dot. The 10 bits per dot is
called #color depth& because it defines the exact shade of each dot in the resolution matrix. If you
multiply out 1,200 x 1,200 x 10, it means that each square inch on a printed piece is represented by
14,000,000 digital bits of information. This is extremely high resolution and extremely high color
depth.
What do 10 bits of color depth represent? In binary, the number of possible values is represented by
the term 2n, where N=number of bits. Therefore, when using bits to indicate color values:

The Versant 4100 uses 4 primary colors: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (C, M, Y, and K). 10 bits of
color depth means that the halftoning algorithms on the press can print each of these primary colors
at the visual equivalent of any one of 1,024 shades, or levels of saturation. 8 bits of color depth would
reduce that number to 256 shades (28=256). Remember that the EFI print servers can deliver 10 bits
of color depth. When explaining the power of the print servers and the press, be sure to emphasize
that the depth of each dot of resolution from the EX 4100 and EX-i 4100 Print Servers produces 1,024
shades of color.
When printed at very small physical size and in close proximity, these four primary colors work
together to fool the eye into seeing the entire color spectrum on the printed page. The color teal, for
example, is produced with a halftone dot that is approximately 80% cyan, 10% magenta, 45%
yellow, and 0% black. Orange is approximately 0% cyan, 50% magenta, 100% yellow, and 0%
black. Various shades and tints of these colors are produced by varying the percentages of the
primary colors.
1,024 possibilities for each primary color provides extremely accurate, lifelike color renditions on the
Versant 4100. In graphic communications, beautiful, smooth gradients are now possible that simply
could not be printed at 8 bits of color depth without noticeable banding.
