Hello everyone!

Helmut Lotti - Umakoti – lyrics

“This is an ancient song Xhosa people proudly sing to this day when we
welcome the new addition to the family – uMakoti (the beautiful new
bride). To translate and summarise, her in-laws sing this song as a sign
of welcoming her into her new family. They are saying uMakoti is ours,
we are happily ululating and dancing … she is coming to take care of
us! uMakoti is ours!”

This old traditional Xhosa song is typically sung by most tribes in South Africa.
Typically sung during lobola proceedings (bride price negotiations) or during the
wedding. It symbolizes acceptance and joy, should be sung with great energy and
in most cases a fast tempo adds to excitement.

I thought it would be great if the song had both an English and Xhosa translation
for variation. Please find attached two links that will showcase the lyrics and
different versions of the song. The first video is an example of how it is typically
sung. The second link is just the lyrics and a simpler demonstration of how the
lyrics are pronounced and it has nice English in it.

I apologize for the delay and lengthy explanation. See everyone next week!
