Mining is the process of extracting valuable materials from the Earth’s surface. The Philippines has been
ranked as the fifth most mineralized country in the world. With the third largest gold deposits, fourth
largest copper deposits, fifth largest nickel deposits, and sixth largest chromite deposits. There are 44
mining companies in the country which 37 are operating mines. Six gold mines, three copper mines and
28 nickel mines, as well as 65 non-metallic mining companies. The country's mineral resource assets are
valued at around $1.32 trillion, but they are largely untapped. Although it provides a high economic value
for the country, we cannot disregard its negative impact to our environment especially those in large scale
ones. There had been petitions to stop mining in the Philippines since some mining processes can cause
some alterations to the environment which includes soil erosion, land deformations, contamination, etc.
With these possible effects the possibility of lifting the current mining ban on open-pit mining could still
happen once the current administration allows it to happen.
