the events happened. Make your illustration comprehensive.

ANSWER:
Do the Task

Directions: Write a comprehensive essays of the topics presented below. Observe correct structure
in writing an essay.

1. An essay comparing the press during the revolutionary period, during the Martial law, and
the present time. What glaring differences do you see?

ANSWER:

“The Philippine Press from the Revolutionary Period, Martial Law, and the Present Time”

The Philippine press is a long standing fortress of truth and awareness that has been tested
through time before it prevailed its freedom and status in the society today. Its significance has
evolved from the revolutionary period to present. The press during the revolutionary period, martial
law, and the present time has indeed some glaring differences from which its bearing have been
challenged and prevailed by the events that have happen from each period of time.

During the Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines, the press was primarily in courtesy of
Spanish government with the news content heavily depicts events from Spain. Apparently, with the
oppressive conditions of the country, the press became a platform of movement against the
Spanish government with Filipino patriots and journalists or ‘Illustrados’ like Jose Rizal, Graciano
Lopez Jaena, Mariano Ponce, and Antonio Luna pioneering the liberation fight through their writing.
Their writings sought to champion liberalism and democracy and had the most of nationalistic
underpinnings. Eventually, the Americans replaced the Spanish occupation in the country and the
press became more liberated than it is formerly was. The Filipino journalists, authors and writers
have gain place and privilege in the publication industry however when the World War II broke out,
these privileges of the Filipino journalists were again snatched. All publications were filtered allowing
only those that were approved and used by the Japanese to publish. However, Filipinos
nonetheless created an “alternative” media like underground “newspapers” to provide the people
with counter information.

Meanwhile, during the martial law, the press have experienced a drastic breakdown as the
government took over a control of most of the media communication outlets; newspapers,
magazines, radio and television facilities. Only selected papers were allowed to operate. Many
editors and journalists were also captured and subjected to imprisonment. With this suppression,
many journalists learned to practice brinkmanship and even self-censorship to avert direct
confrontation with the regime. On 1980’s, so-called alternative press emerged through pro-
government private media and government’s own media infrastructure. From this alternative press,
the people opted for xerox journalism which is mostly from foreign publications, censored for mass
dissemination by the regime. Articles from these publications were written by Filipinos working for
the foreign news services. Furthermore, the nationalistic fervor was also strongly manifested among
the youth through campus publications which have taken an activist stand on national issues.

In the present time, the press has become more progressive, active, and broad. Given with
the misfits of the past, the Philippine press expresses a narrative of revival in the present time. In
fact its stance in dissemination of information have grown bigger, wider and stronger. There are now
millions of newspaper circulations all over the country and publications in service of the public
information and facts. It’s purpose have also extended from mere transmission of information to
providing a reading fare to public for entertainment such as magazines. Contrary to the past
underpinnings of the press which likely advocates social and political reforms or sometimes
highlights nationalistic values that fights for democracy and liberation, the press nowadays
emphasizes on the developments, trends and the current issues on the economic, political, and
social aspects of the country and of the world. As a matter of fact, it now takes its role as a
watchdog to the government especially that the country had an unfavorable background from the
revolutionary period and the martial law of the Marcos regime. Moreover, along with the
technological and digital revolution, the press continuously gain advantage and well as drawbacks
from the emerging media platforms. Indeed, the press today is becoming digitally and
technologically integrated and has a more significant and purposeful role in the society today.

In conclusion, the press in the country have been challenged many times and prevailed its
purpose and status in the society today. The press from the revolutionary period was a platform of
voicing out the battle cry of the Filipinos for liberty and have served as the center of advocacy for
social and political reforms. Meanwhile during the martial law, it experienced suppression by the
government and has little or no power and voice to the people as most media communication
outlets were controlled. On the other hand, the press nowadays have revamped from the dire
bearing that it had before, in fact it has become more progressive, active and broad as the
information opportunities have widened with the advent of technological and digital age. Despite the
changing stance from the different periods of time that the press have undergone, it remain a
fortress of truth and awareness to the people that it serve.

2. An essay of 350 to 500 words on the issues surrounding the Campus Journalism Act of
the Philippines and research on the issues surrounding it considering that it has been 30
years since it was enacted.

ANSWER:

Like any other implemented or enacted acts and laws of the country, the Campus Journalism
Act have also become a subject to violations. There is a bunch of issues that concerns the welfare
of campus journalism and the student writers and editors from different region of the country.
According to the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) (2020), there are 800 cases of
campus press freedom violations in both high school and college level since 2010. Some of these
cases are relevant to suppression of funds, harassment of students writers and editors, and
administrative intervention that results to compromised editorial independence of school publication.

In the 24th of July 2020, the CEGP have filed a complaint to the Commission on Human
Rights (CHR) to address these concerns. They highlighted the following attacks as forms of violation
against campus press freedom: harassment of student writers and editors; meddling editorial
policies; suspension and expulsion of student editors and writers; filing of libel charges against
students journalists; withholding and looting publication funds; non-collection or non-mandatory
collection of publication fee; and administrative intervention.

Some actual violations, particularly the latter, is present in different school publication such
as the University of Santo Tomas Senior High School’s La Stampa when they were not able to
publish their pioneer issue in 2018 because of an editorial that criticized the university’s policy of
using e-books as primary learning materials (Caling, 2020). The former Editor-in-Chief Mary Joy
Abalos stressed that their principal told them that they would not get published unless the would
change, among many things, their editorial piece.
Moreover, in the Banyuhay school publication of Quezon City Science High School, the
Editor-in-Chief Christianneil Ocampo said that they are forced to rely on a 90-peso fraction from
every 500-peso PTA donation a student gives but the principal handles all this money, including
their allotment and is only used for the printing of the newspaper (Caling, 2020).

Clearly, some of the cited violations are indeed a mistreatment and deprivation of student
journalist’s rights and the independence of campus journalism that has to be addressed. The
Section four of the Campus Journalism Act stipulates that a student publication’s editorial board
shall freely determine its editorial policies as well as the management of its funds. Meanwhile the
Section five specifies that funding of the student publications may come from the school’s
appropriation savings, student subscriptions, and donations among other sources. Neither the
school nor the Department of Education can withhold the funding that is meant for the publication.

These sections of the law are supposed to prevent the two aforementioned actual violations
and the other 800 recorded violations from compromising the freedom and rights of campus
publications but it turned out that they became futile in time. This perhaps is because the law lacks
“tooth” as they say to defend itself and the student journalists from the attacks and violation. For
instance, the act does not impose mandatory collection of publication fees which leaves school
publications to depend on voluntary contributions since there is no school appropriations intended
for them.

For the past 30 years, the law is indeed probably outdated and is no longer sustaining the
changing needs of school publications or campus journalism and the student journalists in terms of
rights and freedom protection. It needs some amendments to promote a safe and strongly protected
rights of the student journalists in the country. With the help of the Campus Press Freedom (CPF)
bill that seeks to amend the Campus Journalism Act, hopefully, these concerns in campus
journalism will be properly addressed and provided with a timely and relevant solution that the
campus journalism is longing for.

ETHICS in the PDF “Mass Media Laws and Regulations in the Philippines” and find 2 violations in
the social media pages of media outlets like RMN, Bombo Radyo, Aksyon Radyo, GMA, etc.

ANSWER:

Violation 1: An Iloilo City radio broadcaster Salvador Alojado Capulo allegedly issued disparaging
commentary against call center agents in his nightly radio program over RMN-Iloilo. He allegedly
described the work of call center agents “as the work of lazy people and people who don’t use their
brain cells”. The voice and video recordings of his comments went viral and earned the ire of the
business processes outsourcing (BPO) agents. They criticized him for his unacceptable remarks.

Violation2: Doris Bigornia, a Filipina journalist, field reporter, and news presenter reported a
tsunami scare in Nasugbu, Batangasand nearby towns for TV Patrol World. She said residents as of
Nasugbu, Lian, and Catalagan towns in the province panicked after an alleged report that a tsunami
could occur in their area. Bigornia quoted residents as saying that the report came from Arnold
Clavio of the GMA-7 network, ABS-CBN’s toughest competitor. However, Bigornia said in her report
that no one had personally seen or heard the supposed GMA-7 report. On the other hand, GMA-7
clarified that it only reported on the evacuation of the residents in Nasugbu and Lian and that it was
not the source of information that there would be tsunami in the area. The GMA-7 also stressed that
they did not air a wrong report. Because of her story, a memorandum was written from ABS-CBN
that Bigornia had manifested her clear bias towards ABS-CBN. According to the memo, her report
dragged the ABS-CBN news organization into a “trivial and demeaning network war with GMA-7,
when her story was not even about ABS-CBN nor GMA-7.”

2. Several English teachers at your city’s junior and senior high schools require their students to
read the controversial book, “The adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” The book was written by Mark
Twain. Critics, including some parents, said last week that the book should be banned from all
schools in the city because it is racist. After considering their complaints and discussing them with
his staff, the superintendent of schools, Gary Hubbard, announced today that teachers will be
allowed to require reading the book in the high school English classes but not in any junior high
school classes. Furthermore, the superintendent said that it will be the responsibility of the high
school teachers who assign the book to assist students in understanding the historical setting of the
book, the characters, being depicted and the social context, including the prejudices which existed
at the time depicted in the book. Although the book can no longer be used in any junior high school
classes, the school superintendent said it will remain available in junior and senior high school
libraries for students who want to read it voluntarily. The book describes the adventures of runaway
Huck Finn and a fugitive slave named Jim as they float on a raft down the Mississippi River.

Answer: How many of the 5W’s and H did the tweets contain? Which of the 5W’s came first
most often?

ANSWER: Almost all of the 5W’s are included in the three tweets that I have collated except for the
second tweet on the list as it lacks the “Why” of the 5W’s. On the other hand, the H or “How” is not
contained in all of the three tweets I have chosen neither it is frequently used in almost all the
tweets. In my observation, essentially basing on the three tweets on the list above, the “Who” of the
5W’s that pertains to the person or group involved in the story is what comes first most often in
tweeter teasers.
DO THE TASK:

Directions: Using your notes from this presentation and any other resources available in the
classroom, create a concept map showing to write a basic news lead, also called a summary lead or
a direct lead.

Your map should:

- define “lead” (the center of the map)
- name each of the 5W’s and H, and when they should be used to start a story (five prongs)
- describe the four-step process of how to write a summary lead (a subcategory with four prongs)

ANSWER:
APPLY YOUR KNOWLEDGE:

A. Directions: Given below are poor written lead. Make it better using the conventions of good news
lead writing.

1. POOR WRITTEN LEAD

Twenty-nine-year-old Matt Thomas was arrested for the shooting death of eighty-nine-year-old Mary
Smith near the Chase Bank on 4505 East Fletcher Avenue at eleven A-M.

BETTER LEAD:

Matt Thomas, 29, was arrested for the shooting of Mary Smith, 89, near the the Chase
Bank on 4505 East Fletcher Ave. at 11 a.m.

2. POOR WRITTEN LEAD

Hoping to reduce a flood over-budget spending that has plague the city government for the six
months of this fiscal year, all five city council members voted last night to add the positions of
purchasing agent and a data processing manager to the city payroll.

BETTER LEAD:

All five city council members voted to hire a purchasing agent and a data processing
manager to reduce over-budget spending.

B. Directions: Write a good lead for the following story.

The Miami Dolphins lost in a 41-14 blowout against the Buffalo Bulls on Sunday. But that
was the least of cornerback Brent Grimes worries.
According to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald, Grime’s wife, Miko, was “arrested on charges of
battery on a police officer” and “resisting arrest with violence.” She “also faces a charge of
disorderly conduct, per Miami-Dade PD, the arresting agency, “Beasley reported.

“Police say Miko Grimes broke through a police barricade and entered (a) restricted area,
head-butted an officer & shouted obscenities, “reported WPLG Local 10 News. CNN provided video
of the incident, which appears to show Miko Grimes being held down by police officers in the
parking lot of Sun Life Stadium.

This is not the first time Miko Grimes has made headlines. Per Jason Lisk of the Big Lead, Grimes
went on a Twitter rant aimed at the NFL in January. After she had emergency oral surgery, her
husband asked head coach Jason Garrett for permission to leave the Pro Bowl. However, according
to Lisk, someone else in the NFL apparently “pulled his paid appearances when he missed
practice.”

This apparently sparked Miko Grimes’ commentary on a variety of topics regarding the NFL
including the league’s issues with domestic violence, Thursday night games, concussion concerns
and franchise tags. Lisk pointed out the Twitter rant was “at 40 tweets and counting.”
The arrest comes as Brent Grimes and his team begin to prepare for a Week 4 showdown with the
New York Jets.

Answer here:

What does it mean to become a Transformational Teacher: Take it from a first

person account

“To become a transformational teacher, it is my major role to help the learners to become
active participants in the learning process rather than focusing on the lesson's content, I need to think
of effective strategies which will motivate the learners to think critically, to be able to set their goals
and make reflections. I should become a great facilitator of learning,” shared Mrs. Fatima N. Hermo,
teacher II at Miagao National High School SHS Department when asked about her role as a
transformative teacher.

Becoming a great facilitator of learning does not convey the half of a teacher’s role in a
teaching profession. In an interview with her, Mrs. Hermo shared her compelling and tough
experiences in fulfilling the job of being a transformational teacher.

Some of the backbreaking challenges that Mrs. Hermo have encountered as teacher-facilitator
was shifting from the traditional role as a lecturer to a facilitator by which she need to maximize all
means to provide resources to encourage learners to be actively engaged.

“Facilitative learning requires learners to perform the tasks most of the time. However, there
are learners, especially TVL learners, who are uncomfortable and not too interested or maybe not too
competent to work on their own. They are not familiar with projects that require them to apply their
knowledge and problem solving skills. I find them quiet frustrated at first. So, I need to exert more
effort to encourage them to be responsible with their learning so they will be able to learn more and
appreciate the lesson.”

Mrs. Hermo is an applied subject teacher. She said she need to find time to coordinate with
her fellow teachers especially those who are handling the specialization of the learners she’s in
charge to get better resources and to engage learners in authentic activities which they could easily
relate.

Bittersweet it is, teaching have merits and demerits like all other things. Despite the daunting
challenges that Mrs. Hermo and the rest of the teachers in whole world share, there are favorable
gains, nonetheless that gives real meaning to becoming a transformational teacher.

In her five years of teaching, Mrs. Hermo articulated the important lessons she have learned
and the discoveries in her self ever since she answered the calling of the teaching vocation. She
stressed that she primarily believed that it is important to successfully teach her lesson by the end of
her one-hour class. However, she gradually realized that she should learn how to shift from being a
traditional teacher to a transformational teacher as she become involved with the school’s operations,
engaged in trainings, collaborated with her senior colleagues, and continuously communicated with
her school heads.
“As I fully comprehend the aim of K12 basic education, a learner-focused classroom leading
to transformative education must be achieved to realize the education’s goal. Being a
transformational teacher positively affects my commitment to the school, to my performance and job
satisfaction, and to my learners. I acquire rational and emotional skills that enable me to reflect
critically and develop new teaching perspectives which offer me clues on learning techniques and
activities I can apply in teaching my lessons.”

Adding to this, Mrs. Hermo states, “ In lesson planning, I am able to design lessons with
open-ended questions and develop engaging activities that promote critical-thinking skills and help
my learners relate new knowledge to their own life experiences. At present, after every class
meeting, more than just delivering my lesson, I care about how successful I am in delivering my
lesson based on how my learners learned as reflected in all forms of assessments, how useful the
information they have gained, and if they will be able to apply their learnings in real life situations.”

As much as how actors learn from the character they portray, teachers like Mrs. Hermo
likewise learn from their profession and the role they play as an educator. “Learning is a never-
ending process” emphasized Mrs. Hermo. “Even those individuals who are already on their chosen
field and are considered successful still opt to continue learning through enrolling in related courses,
attending training, and gaining significant experiences.” she added.

Indeed to be a transformational teacher is an arduous job. It takes a brave soul and a passion
to be in a teaching vocation and to answer the calling of educating young minds. But like Mrs.
Hermo, a passionate and determined teacher can surely defy the odds in the teaching field. Mrs.
Hermo has this to share to aspiring student-teachers who just achieved a huge milestone in
graduating from their education courses: “ Consider teaching as a profession and a vocation. When
you love teaching, everything follows”.

UNIT 5: EDITORIAL/OPINION WRITING

DO THE TASK:
Directions: Look for an editorial on the internet, copy paste on MSWord and explain using the
Review function of MSWord what makes the newspeg good or bad. Highlight the main opinion and
explain if it jibes with the newspeg or not. If not, rewrite that portion so that it ties in with the
newspeg. Assess if it is good or bad editorial. Assessment must be after the editorial and written
only in 150 to 250 words.

Reality T.V. Creates an Alternate Reality

Imagine, you’re cooking dinner with your partner when all of a sudden the clock starts ticking
down. Your children start gasping with anticipation. Will you finish in time and who will create the
most delicious side dish ever tasted?

While this may seem slightly exciting and mildly entertaining, is this reality? Television shows
categorized as ‘reality’ would have us believe so. Reality television boasts real people tackling
challenges or just everyday life, no gimmicks. But, is that true? Of course it’s not! There are still
editors, crews, and production schedules. The popularity of reality television has given society an
image of the real world that isn’t remotely real.

At this point in time, we’ve all been warned on the dangers of media use especially
pertaining to violence and other unacceptable behaviors. Studies by Dr. Bryan Gibson of Central
Michigan University show excessive viewing of reality shows with relational aggression can actually
cause people to be more aggressive in their actual lives. While it might seem like mindless
entertainment, research repeatedly shows that watching these ‘real life’ shows where people treat
others in horrible ways for money or fame actually affect brain chemistry.

As if causing real life aggression weren’t bad enough, reality television also contributes to
skewed societal views on what kinds of behavior are acceptable. The mere fact that our society is
so obsessed with reality television as a form of entertainment proves this point. Why do we find it
entertaining to watch people demean, bully, or physically attack others? Why is watching someone
else’s sexual exploits or narcissism a widely accepted form of entertainment?

Imagine following your best friend around a bar from first flirtation with a stranger all the way
to her actual bedroom, only to have her dive under blankets after killing the lights. Sound creepy?
Sounds like many reality T.V. scenes. This kind of ‘peeping Tom’ behavior wouldn’t be tolerated in
the real world, so why should it be tolerated on reality television?

Perhaps the most disturbing impact of these shows is the notion that anyone can and should
become a celebrity for any reason. While we can all agree people should be applauded for worthy
accomplishments, has society’s standard of a worthy accomplishment been dumbed down? Thanks
to reality T.V. the answer is a resounding ‘yes!’ Society’s obsession with fame has spiraled out of
control thanks to today’s media outlets. There are people famous for literally just being rich
alongside those garnering fame for injuring themselves. Are these people deserving of our collective
attention and praise?

There is an argument that not all reality shows are bad. Some of the profession-based
competition shows actually focus on real skills and acknowledge talent. However, even these shows
rely on extreme behaviors to attain the highest level of ratings. Some might also say that reality
television simply holds a mirror up to the viewer. The problem with this argument is that much of
what we see on T.V. is edited for time or theme. Reality stars are often filmed for hours at a time,
but we only see about a half an hour of footage.
In a world where anyone and everyone can film themselves or be filmed for the world to
watch, it’s time society takes a stand on whether or not we want to watch it. Despite the catchy
name, reality television is far from real. You have to ask yourself, do these shows really sum up
what I believe about my fellow man or woman? Hopefully, the collective response is a quick ‘no.’ If
you agree with these statements, it’s time to take action. If there is no one to watch this alternate
reality television, it will eventually die.

Assessment:

The sample of editorial which I cited from the internet is a good editorial. I would brand it as
an example of a good editorial writing because it has a well-established structure.

In the introduction part, the editorial have stated the topic up front and affirmed its relevance
to who is affected by it. It has a clear word of its opinion and stance. It also stated the main reason
or point -- which is has been highlighted -- on the issue, particularly on reality television. This main
point also jibes with the newspeg as it shares the same underlying subject or theme.
In the body part of the editorial, it supported its position with additional reasons, presented
relevant facts and statistics and included ethical or moral reasons for its stand. It also acknowledged
counter-arguments and opinions and gave an example of what would be the best approach to or
outcome of the situation.
In the concluding portion of the editorial, it basically made an emotional or passionate
statement regarding why its opinion or proposed solution is a better alternative. It tied up the whole
story by clearly restating its stance.

In light of these points and observation, I consider the sample editorial presented as thus
well-written and good as it have successfully expressed the paper’s or publisher’s views to
influence the opinions of the readers. It has included a fair, insightful, and persuasive writing
techniques.

ONE MORE TIME:

Directions: Write your own editorial of 6 paragraphs on the most recent controversial issue. Make
sure you make a clear stand or argument on the second paragraph and proceed to develop the
arguments. TNR 12 font size, short bond, single spaced.

The Threat of Global Food Crisis: Recalibrating Behavior on Excessive Food

Consumption
Hunger and and malnourishment is a century-old problem yet we can barely end it. In Sudan,
swollen-bellied babies are looking for anything to eat. In Yemen, where warring parties have blocked
humanitarian aid, hollow-eyed children and their mothers languish on the brink of death from
starvation. In Ukraine, the elderly are collecting rancid rain runoff for drinking water.

The unforeseen strike of Covid-19 pandemic caused lockdowns, businesses shutdowns, and
travel restrictions which burdened the global economy and caused a sharp rise in poverty and
inequality. This in turn sparked a threat to global food security. In a policy brief on the impact of
COVID-19 on food security, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed “The world is at a
crossroads: an estimated 928 million people are experiencing severe food insecurity and hunger.” We
are in the brink of global food scarcity, billion is already starving and by 2050, the world is expected
to feed a population of about 10 billion people. Hence we should recalibrate our behavior towards
excessive food consumption.

Last February of this year, Russia invaded Ukraine and blockade the country’s Black Sea
ports which intensified the world’s confrontation of starvation.
Ukraine is the world’s fifth largest exporter of wheat and corn, and a leading supplier of vegetable oil
and fertilizer. However, because of the ongoing conflict, the disruption of exports will likely last
until the end of the war which day is absolutely unbeknownst to any of us.There is an estimated 20
wars or conflicts around the world having the Ukraine-Russia conflict only one of them. To think
about it, a single war can already seriously disrupt an access to food and water, how much more that
there are 20 times more of it?

Furthermore, changing weather patterns and extreme events such as hurricanes, floods,
droughts and wildfire continue to pose problems like pollution of the ecosystem, compromised
biodiversity, and destruction of harvests. This significantly impact food production and limit the
accessibility and quality of resources. According to a new NASA study, corn crop yields are
projected to decline by about 24% by 2030 while some other staple crops like rice and wheat is also
projected to decline drastically as a consequence of climate change.

These dire situations around the world have grabbed the attention of many influential
diplomats and enabled them to map out plans for easing global food shortages. The Los Angeles
Times newspaper cited that the Biden administration has committed about $8.5 billion to emergency
food assistance and related programs, focusing initially on the Horn of Africa, Yemen, Lebanon and
Haiti. These efforts and initiatives are indeed helpful to ease the mired situation on global food crisis
however they are equally insufficient to suffice the crises for a long run. With the increasing
population and severing climate condition, it is clear that these plans and initiatives are meager to
solve the predicaments right away. Hence, we need to do our part. Recalibrate our food consumption.

The figures, facts, and records narrow us down to the most relevant problem which we
unconsciously cause ourselves, food waste. Around 1.3 billion tons valued at nearly 1 trillion US
dollars is wasted or lost out of one-third of the total food produced for human consumption every
year. This quantity could feed 3 billion people or nearly 40% of the global population. In light of
these information, do you want to incessantly contribute to the 1.3 billion tons of food waste every
year? Or do you want to contribute to the efforts being done in easing global food crisis? We are
fortunate, we still have the latter as one of our options but who knows tomorrow, we’ll be left with
the only choice of eating a sand.

Assessment:
The sports story presented is a well-written or good sports article. Its first paragraph makes a
good impression as it includes the most essential information or the classic 5 W’s referring to who
won? Against whom? By what score? And when?

It indeed expressed a good lead as the writer opted for a straight-news story, picking a
highlight from the game to complete the first paragraph. Moreover, the sports story above makes a
good sports writing because it stated crucial information in the body part such as the featuring
teams and their standing, the decisive plays, the scores and the top scoring teams, and the
progress of the game event throughout the game series. In addition to what precedes, the sports
article have also included the top performing players and those who were injured to present a
detailed information about the game.

Lastly, what makes the sports article more interesting and well-written is the use of some
sports terms or game descriptions-- which are highlighted through underline-- to make the article
appear lively.

Royals Secure Series Win Vs Tigers

By: Carl Anthony Lumontad

Brady Singer won for the first time in over a month as the Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2 to earn
their first winning homestand in nearly a year. Singer repeatedly escaped trouble to go six innings,
allowing one run on seven hits and five walks.

The Tigers loaded the bases with no outs to start the game but scored only one run via Harold
Castro’s sacrifice fly. Detroit opened the fourth with three consecutive singles, but the rally was
stifled when Jonathan Schoop was thrown out trying to score by right fielder Edward Olivares. With
the bases loaded, Olivares reached on Schoop’s error as two crossed the plate.

Schoop was initially called safe; the call was overturned after a short review.
After a short review and going back to the game, Schoop has an 11-game hitting streak, batting .381
(16 for 42).
Another highlight from the game was when James Candelario flew out to center for another base hit.
The throw comes all the way to the plate along with Candelario swimming his way through MJ
Melendez, tagging him before his hand got down the field.

On the succeeding game highlights, Singer walked the bases full in the sixth, then struck out Spencer
Torkelson and Akil Baddoo to end the threat. Meanwhile, Scott Barlow worked the ninth for his 15th
save.

With series wins against Cleveland and Detroit, the Royals concluded their first winning homestand
since July 23-29 last year. The tigers meanwhile have had their lead off on a lot throughout the game
series despite the royals winning.
