1. What could be considered as a shared disposition among James Joyce, William Faulkner,
and André Breton in the field of arts?
All of them bring the modernism in their works. They introduced new literary style called The
Stream of Consciousness. In the modern literary tradition, especially in novel and short.

2. What is the well-known narrative technique both James Joyce and William Faulkner
developed in their writings which became a distinctive feature of literary modernism?
They are best known for their experiments with the narrative style known as stream-of-
consciousness. When compared to the effects that the events have on the characters' minds, the
narrative is frequently irrelevant because the characters tend to follow their own internal clocks
rather than historical ones. Additionally, they are renowned for their experimental writing styles
that pay meticulous attention to the utterance, diction, and cadence of the characters as well as
their emotions and states of mind.

Breton’s “Manifesto of Surrealism”


1. Who is the theorist Breton was under influence of to develop his own surrealism?
The theorist Breton was under influence of Sigmund Freud's theories to develop his own
surrealism.

2. What is the main idea about the process of artistic creation Breton wanted to present in
his “Manifesto of Surrealism”? What, according to Breton in his “Manifesto”, is the enemy
of /obstacle to artistic creation?
- The main idea about the process of artistic creation Breton wanted present in his "Manifesto of
Surrealism" is the unconscious mind (sought for freedom of mind), unburdening of the
individual from societal norm, and emancipating human desire (sexual emancipation).
-According to Breton in his "Manifesto", the realistic attitude- inspired by positivism is the
enemy of artistic creation. He loathe it, for it is made up of mediocrity, hate, and dull conceit. It
is this attitude which today gives birth to these ridiculous books, these insulting plays
3. What is surrealism according to Breton?
Breton said that surrealism is "psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to
express- verbally, by means of the written word. To unleash the power of the imagination, try to
delve into the unconscious.

Joyce’s “The Dead”


1. What is the event which functions as the context for the whole story to take place in
Joyce’s “The Dead”?
The Morkan family's annual dance event.

2. What is Gabriel Conroy’s occupation?


He is a university professor and writes a literary column every Wednesday in The Daily Express.

3. What are the jobs (minor and main) Mr. Conroy is assigned to do in the event?
What label does Miss Ivors use to accuse Mr. Conroy? Why does she call him that way?
He will have a speech. He was arranged to dance with Miss Ivors. Aunt Kate wants him to slip
down and see Freddy if he’s all right, don’t let him up if he’s screwed, and carve the goose. They
were friends of many years’ standing and their careers had been parallel, first at the University
and then as teachers. Miss Ivors encourage him to spend a summer visiting the Aran Isles, a
bastion of Irish culture and language. Gabriel declines, claiming he intends to tour continental
Europe with some friends. Miss Ivors further ridicules him for this. He told that Irish is not his
language. She called him that a West Briton because he said that he was sick of his own country,
sick of it and he had no answer for that problem.

4. What is the secret story Mrs. Conroy reveals to her husband after the event?
She admits that she is "thinking about that song, The Lass of Aughrim". She admits that it
reminds her of someone, a young man named Michael Furey, who had courted her in her youth
in Galway. He used to sing "The Lass of Aughrim" for her. Furey died at seventeen, early in their
relationship, and she had been very much in love with him. She believes that it was his insistence

Faulkner’s “Barn Burning”
1. What is the setting (time and space) in the beginning of the story? Who is the boy
appearing in the beginning of the story? Who is the protagonist of the story?
"Barn Burning" (set in about 1895) opens in a country store, which is doubling as a Justice of the
Peace .
Court Colonel Sartoris Snopes is the protagonist. He is a tragic hero that goes against his father
wishes and has been force to burn barns with his father and lied about doing the senseless crime,
and he is also the boy appearing in the beginning of the story.

2. What is the relationship between Ab Snopes and Mr. Harris, between Ab Snopes and
Major de Spain?
Mr. Harris is a neighbor of the Snopes family and he was also the owner of Harris's land that the
Snopes were short - term tenants.
Major de Spain is an affluent landowner and the Snopes arrive at the estate of Major de Spain.
Snopes and Sarty are African – American servants

3. What does Sarty do and feel at the end of the story?


After finally escaping his father's grasp at the conclusion of "Barn Burning," Sartoris tries to
warn de Spain before it is too late and the barn catches fire. He understands the value of justice
and the impropriety of his father's actions.
