The Persistence of Memory

BY: SALVADOR DALI (YEAR 1931)

EXPLANATION (Context of the Art):

“The Persistence of Memory” is one of the recognizable artwork of Salvador Dali, a surrealist
artist, and is now in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The main idea of the painting is to show
how time passess more rapidly wherein the artist uses a clock to symbolize how time in life is just passing
by. It is also said by some that the concept of Dali in making this painting is to illustrate the relationship
of the past, present, and future. However, the clock does not just symbolize life time but also our dreams
wherein some people believe that the time in one’s dream is passing by more slowly than when a person is
awake. In conclusion, this creation of him is also said to be inspired by his fascination with dreams and
the unconscious mind. It depicts the motivation of Dali about the painting, it is to represent how fluid the
reality can be, where it will eventually be empty and fly fast.
