Antidiabetic Property of Spray-dried Malagoso (Mollugo oppossitofolia L.) using Alpha-
Amylase Inhibition Test

Introduction

Diabetes is a condition that impairs the body’s ability to process blood glucose,

otherwise known as blood sugar. Furthermore, according to the World Health Organization,

Diabetes causes blindness and kidney failure that leads to dialysis and transplants. It destroys

or blocks the blood vessels in the heart, in the brain, and in the legs. It increases the risk of

having a heart attack, a stroke, and a leg amputation. In 2014, the number of people with

diabetes has soared up to 422,000,000 (Global Report on Diabetes, World Health

Organization). According to the Department of Health, one of the leading causes of mortality

in the Philippines is diabetes. In 2017, there were over 3,721,900 cases of diabetes in

Philippines and the prevalence of diabetes in adults is about 6.2% and it is reportedly

increasing. It has also been proven that Diabetes is one of the top 10 leading diseases in the

Philippines afflicting one out of every five Filipinos according to the Philippine diabetes

statistics (Villasenor & Lamadrid, 2006). According to Dr. Joven Cuanang, diabetes is an

epidemic in our country and it continues to be a major problem. There are possible treatment

of diabetes and generally, metformin is the first medication to be prescribed. Malagoso, a

common weed that grows at low and medium altitudes throughout the country has been found

to have plenty of therapeutic value. The plant, belonging to the family Molluginaceae, is a

slender or ascending, smooth, branched, annual herb, with branches 10-40 centimeters long. It

is reported to have analgesic, antidiabetic, anti-hyperlipidemic, antihelminthic, antidiarrhoeal,

diuretic, antimalarial, antiviral, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties (Dr. Martin-Puzon,

J.J. & Dr. Rivera, W.L.). In this study, Malagoso will be used to determine if the plant has

antidiabetic potential. This study intends to find ways to convert Malagoso into an alternative

medicine for diabetes.

In several related literatures reviewed, herbal or medicinal plants and plants that can be

used for medicinal purposes are often identified as the variables. The researchers performed

the studies to investigate and evaluate the hypoglycemic effects, and the antidiabetic effects

and activities. Furthermore, the researchers also performed the study to evaluate their chosen

variable for treatment of diabetes. The common experimental method that the researchers used

are administering the plant extract into the db/db mice and conducting a in vivo and in vitro

studies. The results of the studies are the plant extract showed significant effects, antidiabetic

effects, and hypoglycemic activity. The plants can also be used as a treatment for diabetes.

Methodology

Collection

Malagoso leaves will be gathered and washed with tap water. The Malagoso leaves will be

collected around Pampanga State Agricultural University, Magalang, Pampanga.

Preparation and Extraction

After that, put the leaves on a blender then filter using cheese cloth. The filtrate will be weighed

and water will be added proportionately with a ratio of 1:4. Fifteen percent Maltodextrin (by

weight) will be added to the mixture and it will produce a thick-concentrated extract which will

be diluted with water.

Spray Drying

After producing the thick-concentrated extract, heat the liquid feed and then spray-dry. The

Spray Dryer the finish product—spray-dried powder will be reconstituted with tripodistilled

water and will be used to measure the percent inhibition of Malagoso.

Alpha-Amylase Inhibition Test

An Alpha-Amylase Inhibition kit will be used for the said procedure as recommended. The

results will be observed after the test.

Data Analysis

Appropriate statistical analysis will be used to analyse the data gathered. It will be

submitted to a statistician and ANOVA will be used.
