DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURES ‘SPN 609 FMI 19 - DCU not detected on J1939 Fault Overview Fault set when CAN communication link (J1939) between Engine Control Module (ECM) and Doser Control Unit (DCU) is not detected. Lamp Reaction Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will lluminate when this fault is detected during two consecutive drive cycles. Associated Faults None Fault Facts None Drive Cycle to Determine Fault Status Continuous Possible Causes + DCU B+ circuit Open or short to GND + DCU GND circuit Open + SWBAT Open or short to GND + CAN-H circuit Open or short to GND. + CANH circuit short to PWR + CAN-L circuit Open or short to GND + CAN-L circuit short to PWR + CANH circuit short to CAN-L circuit 1. DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURES 413 ‘Stop |__| Check for active or panding fault codes. Decision Use Electronic Service Tool (EST) with ServiceMaxx™ software. Key ON Engine | Yes: Go to Step 2. OFF (KOEO}, check Diagnostic Trouble Code (OTC) Ist for SPN 608 FMI 19, Does EST DTC list show SPN 609 FMI 19 active or pending? No: Go to Intermittent or Inactive Fault Diagnostic Procedure (page 1394), ‘Step 2 | Inspect connections at Doser Control Unit (DCU) Module 63-pin and | Decision 86-pin connectors. ‘A. Key OFF, Yes: Go to Step 3 Disconnect DCU Module connectors, ©. Check DCU Module connectors and terminals for: damaged or pinched wires; moist or corroded terminals; loose, bent, or broken pins; or broken connector housing. ‘Ace DCU Module connectors, hamesses, and terminals clean and undamaged? _| No: Repair connector, hamess, or terminal damage. After repairs are complete, retest for SPN 609 FM 19. Step 3__| Check for PWR and GND fo DCU. Decision ‘A. Key OFF, Yes: Go to Step 5. B. Disconnect DCU Module §3-pin connector. C. Insert applicable terminal test pins from Terminal Test Kit ZTSE4435C, Into DCU $3-pin connector pin, pin-1,pin-7, and pin-2 and leave OCU Module disconnected. D. Use DMM, measure voltage for following: + Between DCU §3-pin connector pin-B and pin-t + Between DCU 53-pin connector pin-7 and pin-t + Between DCU 53-pin connector pin-6 and pin-2 + Between DCU 53-pin connector pin-7 and pin-2 Is voltage B+ + 0.5 volts? Nor Go to Step 4 ‘Step 4 | Check DOU B+ circuit for Open or short to GND. Decision ‘A. Key OFF. ‘Yes: Repair Open in DCU GND circuits. After repairs are complete, retest for SPN 609 FMI C._ Insert applicable terminal test pins from Torminal Test Kit ZTSE4435C, | 19 into DCU 53-pin connector pin-6 and pin-7 and leave DCU Module disconnected. B. Disconnect DCU Module 53-pin connector, D. Use OMM, measure voltage for following: + Between DCU 53-pin connector pin-6 and known good GND, 414 1. DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURES + Between DCU 53-pin connector pin-7 and known good GND. Is voltage B+ + 0.5 volts? ‘No: Repair Open or short to GND in DOU B+ circuits. After repairs are complete, retest for SPN 609 FMI 19, Use DMM, measure voltage between DCU 53-pin connector pin-52 and known good GND. Is voltage B+ + 0.5 volts? ‘Step 5 _| Check DCU SWBAT crroult for Open or short to GND. Decision A Koy OFF, Yos: Go to Stop 6. B. Disconnect DCU Module 63-pin connector. C._ Insert applicable terminal test pins from Terminal Test Kit ZTSE4435C, into DCU Module §3-pin connector pin-52 and leave DCU Module disconnected. D. Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO), 'No: Repair Open or shart to GND in DCU SWBAT circuit. Afer repairs are complete, retest for SPN 609 FMI 19, Use DMM, measure voltage between DCU 53-pin connector pin-14 and known good GND. Is voltage greater than 1 volt? Step 6 _ | Check for CAN-H Open or shart to GND. Dacision A. Key OFF, Yes: Go to Step 7, B. Disconnect DCU Module $3-pin connector. C._ Insert applicable terminal test pins from Terminal Test Kit ZTSE4435C, into DCU Module 83-pin connector pin-14 and leave DCU Module disconnected. D. Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO), No: Repair Open or shart to GND in CAN-H circult. After repairs are complete, retest for SPN 608 FMI 19. 1. DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURES 415 Stop7 | Check for CAN-H short to PWR. Decision A. Key OFF, Yes: Go to Step 8 B. Disconnect DCU Module 53-pin connector. C._ Insert applicable terminal test pins from Terminal Test Kit ZTSE4435C, into DCU Module 53-pin connector pin-14 and leave DCU Module disconnected. D. Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO). E. Use DMM, measure voltage between DCU 53-pin connector pin-14 and known good GND. Is voltage less than 4 volts? No: Repair CAN-H short to PWR. Alter repairs are complete, retest for SPN 609 FMI 19, ‘Stop ® __| Check for CAN-L Open or short to GND. Decision ‘A. Key OFF, Yes: Go to Stop 8, B. Disconnect DCU Module 53-pin connector, C._ Insert applicable terminal test pins from Terminal Test Kit ZTSE4435C, into DCU Module 53-pin connector pin-15 and leave DCU Module disconnected. D. Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO). E_ Use DMM, measure voltage between DCU 53-pin connector pin-18 and known good GND, Is voltage greater than 1 volt? ‘Nor Repair Open or short to GND in CAN-L circuit. After repairs are complete, retest for SPN 609 FMI 19 ‘Step | Check for GAN-L short to PWR Decision ‘A. Key OFF, Yes: Go to Step 10 BL Disconnect DCU Module 53-pin connector. ©. insert applicable terminal test pins from Terminal Test Kit ZTSE4435, into DCU Module 63-pin connector pin-15 and leave DCU Module disconnected D._ Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO}, E._Use DMM, measure voltage between DCU 53:pin connector pin-15 and known good GND, Is voltage less than 4 volts? No: Repair CAN-L short to PWR Ater repairs are complete, retest for SPN 609 FMI 19, 416 1. DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURES Step 10__| Check for short between CAN-H and CAN-L circuits Decision A Key OFF, Yes: End Diagnostics, Retest for B._ Disconnect OCU Module 83-pin connector. SPN 809 FMI 18 ©. Insert applicable terminal test pins from Terminal Test Kit ZTSE4436C, into DCU Madule 83-pin connector pin-1 and pin-14 and leave DCU Module disconnected. D. Use DMM, measure resistance between DCU 53-pin connector pin-15 and pin-14, Is resistance greater than 50 ohms? 'No: Repair Short between CAN-H and CAN-L. After repairs are complete, retest for SPN 609 FMI 13. End Diagnostic Test ‘Afier performing diagnostic steps, f SPN 609 FMI 19 remains, verify each step was completed correctly and proper decision was made, Notily supervisor for further action.
