- The Colonel gave away Mrs Bixby an expensive mink coat.

- The Colonel's letter said he knew she was fond of mink, so he gave her the mink
coat as a gift
and he told her that they would not be able to see each other anymore for his own
personal reasons.

- She told her husband she travelled to Baltimore once a month so as to see her old
Aunt Maude.

- At the end of the story Mrs Bixby went to her husband's office in order to
receive the coat, but
he gave her a little fur neckpiece. She thought the Pawnbroker had cheated on her
husband, however
as soon as she left the office, she notice the secretary was wearing the coat that
the Colonel had
given away her.
