A Nicolas Motte film

LOGLINE
All Sarah wants is sleep, but her nights are plagued with dreams of ecocide.

SYNOPSIS
Sarah’s nights are plagued with dreams of ecocide. Her debilitating insomnia
caused by eco-anxiety impacts her personal and professional life to the point
where she loses her job and her boyfriend leaves her. Sarah’s disposition steadily
worsens until a point of crisis and a final revelation, which prompts her to take
action.

By approaching the subject of Climate Change through a personal lens, Sweet

Dreams gives a voice to the concerns of the young, highlighting a new breed of
mental health issue, all the while encouraging an existentialist
philosophy and the importance of taking action.
DIRECTOR’S
STATEMENT
Narrative films have only recently started to tackle the subject of
climate change. Shorts that do are generally documentaries. There
have been so many they’re losing their impact.

Sweet Dreams takes a different tack. It foregrounds and humanises

climate change through realistic personal drama. All the while
making plain the larger stakes at play, the film makes climate change
personal by exploring a new breed of mental health
problem: eco-anxiety.

Without preaching or reviewing the well-trodden facts, Sweet

Dreams tackles climate change from an emotional perspective with
striking imagery to hopefully bridge an empathy and understanding
gap between activists and their detractors who simply can’t
fathom why some people are prepared to take direct action and risk
arrest to make change, however small the part they play in it.

THE STORY
They say to write what you know. Sweet Dreams draws on the personal
experience of its Writer-Director who was starting to despair in the face of the
nonchalance of family, friends, and other groups he’d approached about climate
change and a climate change themed film.

Written 6 weeks before Extinction Rebellion’s September 2021 protest,

producing Sweet Dreams was a race against the clock. Fortunately, the script
struck a chord with a number of professionals and film and TV amateurs without
whom it couldn’t have been made.

It also attracted a number of partners who were willing to give the self-
funded project assistance, ranging from The Peabody Trust who granted the use
of Holloway Prison, Blind Ltd, who contributed pro-bono VFX work, Wash, who
worked on the grade, Getty Images, and a number of Directors and
Cinematographers from Australia to the United States who contributed or heavily
discounted their work to illustrate climate change in the film.

As much as it is a short film, it is the product of an international team -

something its Writer-Director really didn’t expect.
