\ = IS (| iss awe to my dea fiend and colleague Robert Garofalo Foreword ‘Audition Etudes is a source book of graduated studies for snare drum, timpani, keyboard percussion and multiple percussion ‘instruments. These studies can be used to measure student progress, as supplementary lesson material, oF as sight-reading or prepared literature for band and orchestra auditions. Regular use of this material will insure that students are systematically {noduced toa variety of percussion instruments, This is especially important forthe accessory instruments such as tiangle, tambourine, and cymbals which are often neglected. ‘Although methods and materials for measuring performance skills are available for brass, woodwind, and string instruments almost noting is pulsed for preusion nsrumens, This grafted colin of ogi ‘tudes was designed to fulfill I sincerely hope that the materials contained in Audition Etudes will assist the instructor in providing their ‘students with an interesting and comprehensive percussion education, aw. The Grteria for each instrument is fundamental and addresses basic elements of performance. Use of the “evaluation Charts” will provide the student with a precise summary of his ability in each performance category. ‘Snare Drum ‘The beginning etudes for snare drum are chythmically simple and require no rolls or embellishments. As the etudes progres, ols and embellishments are added along with expressive dynamics, mixed meters, and complex rhythms. Consider the “performance categories” carefully during the playing of each etude. Pay special attention to tone, especially the uniformity of sound being produced. Carefully observe where the student is playing on the drum head land the consistency of each stroke. Make sure that the quality of all rolls, long or short, are the same; they should be played in a closed orchestral style. Later The beginning etudes for timpani require the use of two drums (Iwenty-cight inch and twentyefive WN), AE studies require three and four drums; add a thirty inch and twenty-three inch drum respectively. “Ger ranter: sticks will suffice for all studies, However, a student who selects a more specialized stick for the Purpose of cal pretation should be given extra credit under the category of “tone”. Make sure that rhythmic figures Ee low pitches are clearly articulated; this requires a staccato technique. The most resonant tone is produced by stk the drum head approximately five inches from the edge. This important aspect of timpani performance shoul carefully evaluated. Accurate tuning is essential. The first is in a major key and the second in the relative minor. Standard major and minor keys through three sharps and three flats are included. “Medium-hard” mallets designed for the type of instrument used will provide a satisfactory sound throughout, Good tone is normally produced by striking the middle of the bar, never over the node (area over the connecting cord).
