Events of play before the song

There is a large party being thrown in India by Mary’s parents. Everyone at the party
contracts cholera and dies, Mary somehow doesn't get cholera so she doesn’t get sick. She is
found alive by Lieutenant Write and Shaw. Write and Shaw takes her and they burn the house
down with all her belongings (except a framed picture we don’t know who is in it yet) to keep the
contamination contained.
We cut to the Library at Misselthwaite Manor where Archibald (Mary’s uncle) and his
brother (Dr.Neville Craven) and the housekeeper (Mrs. Medloc) are deciding if they should let
Mary (Rose, her mom was Archibald’s dead wife’s sister so he is her closest living relative)
come live at the Manor or send her to a boarding school. Archibald decides to let Mary stay to
mourn her loss and then they will decide what to do with her.
Mary is taking this all like a champ. Every person she means says she is showing no
emotions about everyone she knows dying and being moved across the world.
Mary heard crying in the house. Archibald sings about how lost he is without his wife Lily
Mary’s sitting room is the first scene where I (Martha) come in. I wake Martha up and
bring her breakfast. And this is just an introduction scene for the two of us. I give her my jump
rope so she has something to do while I work all day.
Scene Two, Archible is in the ballroom watching the ghost of Lily dance. (it's clear from
the text if he can actually see the ghosts or is just imagining them that's kind of up to the actors
and audience.) In this song, we see how Lily and Archibald fell in love. Lily’s ghost disappears
when Mary enters the ballroom. We find out that the picture Mary brought with her from India is
a picture of Lily. They talk about what happens to people when they die.
The next few scenes are just Mary going around finding parts of the grounds and
meeting different people. She meets My brother Dickon, she makes friends with a bluebird and
she means Ben the gardener.

Lyrics of song
My Thoughts
Beats of the song
Wants

This is a transition from the lines to the song

What you've got to do is
Finish what you have begun,
I am telling her that I am not sure about how to stay strong but that she has to find the strength
I don't know just how,
Telling her to not give up
But it's not over 'til you've won!

(The music makes a big shift here.) This is where I start to use metaphors to explain to this little
girl what she has to do in ways that she will understand. (also storms often symbolize back
things to come I think it is interesting that I am telling her that bad things are coming to her but
she just has to get through it even when the worst of the storm comes by.)
When you see the storm is coming,
This is the worst part of the storm
See the lightning part the skies,
You can not run away from your problems (we leave the metaphors for a moment)
It's too late to run-
You can be scared
There's terror in your eyes!
I am here for you. I can help you.
What you do then is remember
This old thing you heard me say:
Back to the metaphor
"It's the storm, not you,
That's bound to blow away."

Stay strong
Hold on,
Hold on to someone standing by.
Hold on.
Sometimes you don’t know why bad things are happening but you have to stay strong anyway
Don't even ask how long or why!
Don’t let people tell you you are wrong just because they think they are better than you
Child, hold on to what you know is true,
Don’t give up halfway through the fight
Hold on 'til you get through.
Child, oh child!
Hold on!

Back to the heavy metaphors about being afraid and standing strong nun the less.
When you feel your heart is poundin',
The devil could be one of the things here. A metaphor for the bad of the word, or the bad that is
the doctor.
Fear a devil's at your door.
You can not hide from all your fears
There's no place to hide-
You're frozen to the floor!
You might not want to face these things but you still have to
What you do then is you force yourself
To wake up, and you say:
"It's this dream, not me,
that's bound to go away."

The night is just another way of saying the bad things will go away
Hold on,
Hold on, the night will soon be by.
Sometimes the first thing you try doesn’t work and you have to try again.
Hold on,
Until there's nothing left to try.
Angles are the opposite of the devil talked about earlier. Saying there is always good after the
bad if you can get through the bad. It is also saying that there are people out there who want to
help you.
Child, hold on, There's angels on their way!
Hold on and hear them say,
"Child, oh child!"

This is another shift in the music. (This to me says that the last thing I was doing where not
helping Mary so I have to try something else.)
And it doesn't even matter
If the danger and the doom
I am saying that bad things don’t always just come from where and when you are expecting
them they can come from anywhere and you have to be ready to fight them all.
Come from up above or down below,
Or just come flying
At you from across the room!

I think the “man” I am talking about is two men. It’s Archebled and the Doctor.
When you see a man who's raging,
Archebled has an immense fear of his child and making him worse.
And he's jealous and he fears
The walls are the medical care given to Colin.
That you've walked through walls
He's hid behind for years.
Another incense of me telling Mary that she has to keep going even when it is hard
What you do then is you tell yourself to wait it out
And say it's this day, not me,
That's bound to go away.

I am just reinforcing the last thought to finally drive in that plot.

Child, oh hold on.
It's this day, not you,
That's bound to go away!
