Heretic Surface was created predominantly using

instruments manipulated and built specifically for

these recordings. These included mostly old reel to reel

machines converted into loopers, an old wire recorder

abandoned on Main Street and circuit-bent tape decks,

plus a generous helping of Prophet ‘08, some vocalis-

ing and my sister’s unwitting piano. Philip Glass and

Yasunori Mitsuda came to say hello but appear here

clandestinely. The finished pieces were constructed out

of improvised recordings using these instruments and

layered live deteriorations of the resulting sessions over

great stretches of gloam and blown-out headphones.

During this process they were put down to quarter

inch tape on top of themselves a few too many times

and came spiralling out pretty much as you hear them,

except that Sean McCann took them afterwards and

did some magic to make them sound pretty. This album

is meant to accompany its sister album, Cloudmarks,

which was recorded during these same sessions. It is

also intended to stand alone if that’s how it’s feeling.

Thank you for letting your attention land here for awhile.

Please enjoy.
