As a parent or
teacher, you may have noticed that your Year 6 student struggles with spelling. It can be frustrating
for both the student and the adult trying to help them. However, there are many creative and
effective ways to make spelling homework more engaging and enjoyable for Year 6 students.
1. Word Scramble
One fun way to practice spelling is through word scrambles. Write out a list of words for your
student to unscramble. This activity not only helps with spelling, but also improves critical thinking
and problem-solving skills.
2. Spelling Bee
Organize a spelling bee for your student and their classmates. This can be a fun and competitive way
for them to practice their spelling. You can also make it more challenging by including words that are
commonly misspelled.
3. Memory Game
Create a memory game using index cards or flashcards. Write out a word on one card and its
definition on another. Your student can match the correct word with its definition, helping them to
not only spell the word correctly, but also understand its meaning.
4. Spelling Journal
Encourage your student to keep a spelling journal where they can write down new words they come
across and their correct spelling. This can also be a great way for them to track their progress and see
how their spelling improves over time.
5. Online Resources
There are many online resources available for Year 6 students to practice their spelling. Help them
find interactive games, quizzes, and activities that can make spelling homework more enjoyable and
effective.
