Assignment 2 problems: Due date 23th April 2023.

1. A helicopter is hovering at an altitude of 1000 m when a panel from its underside breaks
loose and falls to the ground. The mass of the panel is 15000 g, and it hits the ground
with a speed of 45 m/s. Calculate the loss of mechanical energy due to air resistance
during the panel’s descent?

2. A runner of mass 50 kg begins his slide into second base where he is moving at a speed
of 4.0 m/s. The coefficient of kinetic friction between his clothes and Earth is 0.70. He
slides so that his speed is zero just as he reaches the base. (a) Calculate the mechanical
energy of the system? (b) How far does he slide?

3. Starting from rest; a 5.00 kg block slides 2.50 m down a rough 35.0° incline. The
coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the incline is 0.436.

Figure 1

(a) Draw the free body diagram of the block-incline system.

(b) Determine the magnitude of the acceleration of the block.
(c) Calculate the work done by the friction force between block and incline.
(d) Determine the work done by the force of gravity.
(e) Determine the potential energy of the block at the top of the incline.
(f) Use energy methods to determine the speed of the block at the bottom of the incline.

4. A 0.300 kg block on a vertical spring with a spring constant of 5 × 103 N/m is pushed
downward, compressing the spring 0.120 m. When released, the block leaves the spring
and travels upward vertically.
(a) How high does it rise above the point of release?
(b) Determine the velocity of the block as it passes through the equilibrium.
