OVERVIEW OF MACHINE LEARNING

What is Machine Learning?

Machine learning is a branch of Artificial

It is not very different to a human brain, we all were born
Intelligence that focuses on making computers with a few predetermined settings and instructions and
perform specific tasks based on data that was throughout life, we start learning everything that we did
previously given without specifically being given not know when we were born because we see patterns
instructions on the task. and recognising those patterns is what makes us
intelligent, ML is the same as a human, it is given an initial

examples of other similar data to make the
machine perform the outcome without the need to
specifically set the instructions.

OVERVIEW OF MACHINE LEARNING

What is it used for?

Machine learning is used in a wide range of industries because of its

versatility for performing analyses on much bigger sets of data
compared to traditional programming
Some of the applications are:
Pharmaceutical companies for predicting whether a molecule is
going to bind to the correct receptors in the human brain, therefore it
speeds the time for launching a new medicine.
It is also used to prognosticate the probability of a patient surviving
or developing cancer, usually, it is composed of many factors
including age sex and family history, thanks to machine learning, we
are now able to predict in a more accurate and educated way the
possible outcomes of the patient thanks to previous data from other
patients with similar characteristics

BCS CODE OF
CONDUCT
• What is the BCS Code of Conduct?
The BCS Code of Conduct is a series of statements
made by the British Computer Society for the
professionals in the IT industry that are members of
the society and want to remain in the BCS.

• What is its purpose?

The BCS Code of Conduct was created to set a
standard in the ethical aspects of working in the IT
Industry

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MACHINE LEARNING
AND THE BCS CODE OF CONDUCT

What is its relationship?

Machine Learning Relates to the BCS Code of Conduct as it states on

their first key principle, which is to promote equal access to IT and
be virtue for society. Machine Learning makes comply with this his
Principle as ML makes IT more accessible to society and makes
people's lives easier.
Key Principle Nº1
4. Promote equal access to the benefits of IT and seek to promote
the inclusion of all sectors in society wherever opportunities arise.

EXAMPLES OF MACHINE LEARNING
BEING USEFUL FOR SOCIETY
Examples:
Prevention and detection of Credit Fraud

Preventing and Detecting Credit Card fraud is a task which would be very hard
to analyse, but thanks to machine learning and the information of millions of
customers around the world, machine learning considers these settings to be
able to prevent and detect them.

Detection and protection against malware and undesired emails

Mailing services such as Gmail or outlook use machine learning to check mail that
was sent to one of their users contains spam or malware nested in the email.
