reinforces learning and helps students develop important skills such as time management and
responsibility. However, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) recognized that excessive
homework can have negative impacts on students' well-being and academic success. In 2013, the
TDSB implemented a new homework policy to address these concerns.
Amount of homework: The policy recommended that the amount of homework should be
reasonable and appropriate for students' age and grade level. It also stated that homework
should not be assigned on weekends or holidays.
Timeframe for completion: The policy suggested that students should have enough time to
complete their homework, and that teachers should consider students' schedules and
workload when assigning deadlines.
Types of homework: The policy emphasized the importance of varying the types of
homework assigned, such as reading, writing, and hands-on activities, to cater to different
learning styles.
Quality over quantity: The policy stressed that homework should be meaningful and
purposeful, rather than just busy work. It also recommended that teachers provide feedback
on homework to help students improve their learning.
