COC 2 – SETTING UP COMPUTER NETWORKS
Determine Your Network Needs:
Understand what you want to achieve with the network.

• file sharing
• gaming
• basic connectivity
Choose the Right Hardware:
• Ensure all devices have network adapters (wired or
wireless).
• If using Wi-Fi, make sure your devices support the same
Wi-Fi standard (e.g., 802.11ac).
Connect Devices:
Physically connect devices.

• using Ethernet cables and switches


• wirelessly through a router
Assign IP Addresses:
For a small network, you
can assign IP addresses
manually or use DHCP
(Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol) to
assign them automatically.
Configure Workgroup or Homegroup:

On Windows, you can set up


a Workgroup or Homegroup
to easily share files. Right-
click on "Computer" or "This
PC" > Properties > Change
settings > Computer Name >
Workgroup.
Enable File and Printer Sharing:
In your network settings, ensure file and
printer sharing is enabled. This allows
devices to share resources.
Share Folders:
Right-click on the folder
you want to share >
Properties > Sharing >
Share.
Set Permissions:
Configure folder permissions to control who
can access and modify shared files.
Firewall Settings:

Adjust firewall
settings to allow
file and printer
sharing.

Test Connectivity:
Ping other devices to ensure they're reachable.
Troubleshoot if Necessary:
Check network
settings, troubleshoot
connectivity issues,
and ensure firewalls
aren't blocking
connections.
Document Your Network:

Keep a record of IP
addresses, shared folders,
and login credentials for
future reference.
Regular Maintenance:
Periodically review and
update security settings.
Check for software
updates on devices and
the router.
