MOODLE 1
The well-preserved remains of an ancient marine reptile, identified as a mosasaur named Wakayama
Soryu or "blue dragon," have been discovered in Japan near the Aridagawa River in Wakayama
Prefecture. The fossil, dating back 72 million years to the late Cretaceous period, was found by Akihiro
Misaki in 2006. Researchers from the University of Cincinnati examined the specimen and identified
unique features, including a shark-like dorsal fin and extra-long rear flippers. The mosasaur, similar in
size to a great white shark, is scientifically designated as Megapterygius wakayamaensis and exhibited
extraordinary swimming capabilities. Its almost binocular vision suggests it was an effective hunter in the
Pacific Ocean during the age of the Tyrannosaurus rex. The discovery challenges existing classifications
of mosasaurs, making it distinct among ancient sea reptiles. The findings were reported in the Journal of
Systematic Palaeontology.
