INTRODUCTION:
Unemployment can be defined as a situation in which there is a lack of employment
opportunities where a person actively seeks employment but is not able to obtain it. It has
been argued that unemployment is one of the most reliable indicators of an economy's
health (HAYES, 2022). According to the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSTATS,
2022), the number of people unemployed worldwide increased by 33 million, reaching 220
million. In this research, I chose South Africa as my national perspective, however, I will
discuss unemployment in the countries: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), Sultanate of
Oman, and Egypt from a global perspective.
The General Authority for Statistics (GaStat, 2022) of KSA indicated that the rate of
unemployment among Saudi nationals in the third quarter of 2022 reached 9.9%. In fact,
nearly 20.5% of all Saudi Arabian adult females and 4.3 % of Saudi Arabian adult males
are unemployed.
A study held at the National Center for Statics and Information of the Sultanate of Oman
released that the unemployment rate among Omanis during 2021 reached 1.92% with
approximately 5.6% of females are unemployed compared to 1.09% of males (NSI, 2021).
According to the Statistical Observatory Launching data of Egypt, it is shown that the
unemployment rate during 2022 among Egyptians reached 7.4% (CAPMAS, 2022).

Causes of unemployment in South Africa

Due to the strict labor laws, and administrative hurdles, many local companies have been
unable to hire additional employees which lead to the sluggish growth of the economy
(Causes Of Unemployment). There are other factors leading to the persistence of
unemployment in South Africa, Including:
Inadequate education and lack of productivity:
Decreasing in educational level has a big input on unemployment number. If the education
system is not producing enough skills needed, there won’t be any help from citizens since
they weren’t educated well (the five possible reasons).
Low levels of entrepreneurship:
Dynamic entrepreneurship has been shown to be one of the most successful ways to turn
around the economy. When the economy is stagnant, unemployment rates would be high
(Mulvihill, 2022).
Increase in the youthful population:
When the youth population increases, the number of people seeking employment will
increase. Due to not enough policies there will not be enough jobs for the rest people
which leads to an unemployment rate increase. (How does population growth affect
African jobs?, 2015)
Consequences of Unemployment in South Africa:
Unemployment can have long-lasting effects on the economy as well as to the
government and it may also affect the citizens of South Africa. The actual extent of
unemployment is hard to determine, The particular reason for this circumstances is
because of the significant danger of Poverty, hardship, health, and even psychological,
and mental issues which I will discuss below (Macdonald, 1998):
Poverty and Hardship:
There is no doubt that unemployment is the major cause of poverty in South Africa today.
Almost 70 percent of unemployed people in South Africa have incomes, taxes, and unpaid
arrears. (Macdonald, 1998)
Physical health issues:
According to researchers at Penn State, unemployed citizens in South Africa can barely
afford doctor’s visits which leads to serious health problems that mostly lead to death.
(Waltower, 2023)
Mental health issues:
On the authority of the University of Nevada, it turned out that people unemployed have
more risk than others of getting in either depression or stress, and anxiety. (Waltower,
2023)

Course of Action :
To reduce the unemployment rate, the government of South Africa can set a new policy
that would be an advantage for people facing this problem. (Lerman, 2011) As an example
Lower employment taxes to increase labor demand, like a reduction in national insurance
contributions (Unemployment, 2021) .
The government can also promote small businesses as well as educate and train people
in the skills they really need in the workspace (Keveloh, 2015).
Furthermore, Fund direct job creation can help in increasing the rate of employment where
a high rate of job creation will lead to people spending more when there are many benefits
to be had (2019).
The government should also try to expand energy development that will benefit the
environment, where it is possible to create direct jobs through design, project
management, or even distribution. (Agradi)
CONCLUSION
To sum up everything that has been stated so far, this research demonstrated to me that
unemployment is a serious issue that has a huge effect on society all around the world. It
is considered one of the most serious problems that many countries suffer from as it has
very high rates. Not to forget mentioning that governments around the world try their best
to solve this problem by taking significant polices and steps to help stop this problem.

After writing this research, I learned that unemployment is exceedingly common in South
Africa, where 35.5% of citizens face and experience this problem since decades without
any result, but increasing rates. (Saleh, 2023)
