What is agoraphobia?
Agoraphobia is derived from Greek words
ἀγορά (agorā́), meaning 'place of
assembly' or 'market-place' and -φοβία (-
phobía), meaning 'fear'.
Agoraphobia is a fear of being in situations
where escape might be difficult or that help
wouldn't be available if things go wrong.
Someone with agoraphobia may be scared of

What causes agoraphobia?
Agoraphobia can be caused by:
• Depression;
• Other phobias, such as
claustrophobia;
• Anxiety disorders;
• Substance abuse;
• Genetic;
How does it affect everyday life?
Agoraphobia can severely limit your ability to socialize, work, attend important events and even
manage the details of daily life, such as running errands. If your agoraphobia is severe, you may
not even be able to leave your home. Without treatment, some people become housebound for
years.
