BURNER FOR A HEATER
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention broadly relates wo @ burner
for a heater. The bumer is arranged for combustion of &
hydrocarbon liquid.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
{0002} Traditionally, heating of buildings such as private
homes involves gas, oil, wood and electric heaters. Gener=
ally, wood heaters have the disadvantage that a flue is
roguired for exhaust fumes and that the wood needs to be
stored. In many dvellings such as apartments, units and
townhouses insallation of a flue and storage of the wood
may’ cause problems or may aot be possible at all. Gas
heaters have similar problems as a gas connection is
required. Oil heaters also need to be Med. Flectreal heaters
ate generally rather expensive to operate and require elec-
trical connections
[0003] One interesting and layely environmentally clean
altemative isa heater that is artanged for combustion of &
hydrocarbon liquid such as an alcohol. For example, if
‘ethanol is combusted, the exhaust products are largely
Timited to earbon dioxide and water steam,
[0004] A simple bumer for ethanol has previously been
used {0 provide s heat source for a fireplace. This burner
‘comprises a open tank in which ethanol is combusted
However, as ethanol and other hydrocarbon liguids are
‘easily combustible and may even be explosive i in vapour
orm of mixed with ai, there is @ need for a bumer for 8
hiyrocaron liquid that provides improved safety
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0005] The present invention provides in a fist aspect »
bumer fora heater for combustion ofa hydrocarbon lighi,
the burner comprising:
[0006] s combustion chamber having a combustion zone
Jor combusting the hydrocarbon liquid and at least one tank
portion for coatsining an amount of the bydrocarboa liquid,
the of each tank portion being positioned adjacent the
‘combustion zone and being arranged to feed the hydrocar-
bon liquid inte the combustion zane, the or each tank portion
being at least in part filled wit a filling material having @
plurality of portions that passthrough the interior ofthe or
‘cach tank portion
[0007] A combustible gas over the surface of the hydro=
‘eahon guid typically needs to have a temperature above &
threshold value to ignite. The filling material typically is
arranged for distribution of atleast some of the heat that is
Jn use developed in the combustion zone and diocted into
the or each tank portion whereby local heat maxima in the
tank portion are reduced and thereby likelihood of ignition
inthe tank portion ie redaced. Further, as typically burning
‘of the hydrocarbon liquid inthe tank portion is avoided, el
cellciency is also increased,
[0008] For example the filling material may comprise a
Jarge number, such as more than one hundred or more than
‘one thousand particles which define spaces between them,
Altematively, the filing material may comprise # mesh or
pauze such as a mesh or gaze of wires or fibees or a metallic

‘wool such as ste! wool. The filling material may comprise
metallic material, aplstics material, amineral orany other
‘title material, The stel wool may be stainless stel wool

[0009] The heater may be a heater for heating at least a
portion of building such 38 commercial space or a home.
FFor example, the burner may form a part of fireplace.
[0010] ‘The bumer typically comprises a combustion con-
{rol means for controlling gas exchange ofthe combustion in
the combustion zone
[0011] For example, the contro! means may comprise an
‘pening that allows dilfsion of oxygen into the combustion
chamber and a closure for the opening. This particular
‘arrangement has the advantage that operation ofthe fame of
the bumer may be extinguished at any time by simply
closing the opening and thereby interupting the supply of
‘oxygen requited for the combustion. This feature therefore
provides a further significent safety advantage.
[0012] ‘The contol means may also be arranged to regulate
the oxygen dillon into the combustion chamber so as to
regillate the combustion properties of the bumer. This fea-
ture therefore allows the regulation of the heat and flame
‘wat and ofthe constimption of the hylrcarbon liquid
[0013] For example, the combustion contro! means may
comprise a shutter that is arranged 10 adjust the opening
fndiar close the opening s0 that combustion may be com-
twolled and/or to extinguish aflame in the combustion zone.
‘The combustion chamber may comprise s lid portion in
the opening is positioned and the shutter may be
‘arranged to slide aeross the opening of the lil portion, The
shutter typically is guided by a guide and moveable relative
to the opening iypically in a straight direction. The shuter
‘may also be connected to the combustion chamber by a
hinge that allows the sliding movement. In this case, the
hinge may be arranged for movement about a vertical axis
[0014] Altematvely, the shutter may be moveable relative
to the opening ina direction that his @ Vertical componett
In this case the hinge typically is arranged for movement

[0015] The shutter may be positioned inside dhe combus
‘ion chamber snd may be arrange for sliding across an inner
surface of he lid portion, In a specific embodiment the
shutter and the Tid portion are areanged so that the shurer
‘may not interfere with objects located onthe burner. Further,
‘mechanism that may be associated with the shutter may be
positioned so that it cannot easily be accessed Irom the
‘outside of the combustion chamber which further improves
the safety of the bumer, Fuser, the shuter may comprise
rollers which ane guided by guides in the lid portion and
Whiel improve the smoothness ofthe sliding motion when
the shutter is moved and thereby reduce likelihood of spark
Tormation.
[0016] In order to reduce the likelihood of jamming ofthe
shutter, a portion of the shutter that in use isin contact with
the lid portion may comprise a material that i softer han the
lid portion whieh it contacts. In one specific embodiment the
shutter is arranged so that, when the opening i closed, the
lid portion overlaps the shutter. Because of the overlap, the
likelihood of oxygen diffusion into the combustion chamberUS 2006/0134575 Al
is further reduced
further improves the salty ofthe burner. Further, the
shutter may comprise a handle portion tht in use projects
through a slot of the lid portion and the bumer may be
‘arranged so that movement of the handle portion along the
slot ellcts sliding ofthe shutter across the opening ofthe id
portion. The chamber may be configured such that oxygen
difhsion through the slot is substantially inhibited,
[0017] The combustion chamber may comprise stainless
steel and the softer material may be brass. Spacers may be
Positioned at an extemal portion ofthe bumer arranged for
Positioning between the burner and an item tht support the
bbumer so that direct contact of the bummer with the item is
voided and the item may comprise « combustible material
such asa timber material. For example, the burner with the
spacers may be arminged for positioning in the combustible
material. The burner may aso comprise a tray in which the
bumr is positioned and which is aranged to avoid direct
‘contact with the combustible materia
[0018] The heater typically is arranged for positioning in
‘an item so tht at lewst a portion ofthe burner is positioned
below a surface of the item. For example, the heater may be
‘arranged for positioning in the item so thatthe surface ofthe
top portion of
be arranged for
preloning ins replace or any oer building prion ora
‘furniture item such asa table, The heaer typically does not
have any connections such as fuel ines and typically is
‘arranged for manual refiling. This has the particular avan-
tage that itis relatively easy to install the heater in @
building, Further, typically no flue is required
[0019] The combustion chamber may comprise fuel inlet
‘openiig through whieh the hydrocarbon liquid may be filled
Jno the or each tank portion of the combustion chamber. The
Jue! inlet opening is typically remote from the opening ofthe
‘combustion contro! means.
[0020] Punter, the fuel inlet opening may comprise «|
‘losure, such as a shutter, and the burner may be arranged so
that, when the shutter of the combustion control means is
fully opea, the shutter of the fel inlet opening is closed and
‘only when a least a portion ofthe shutter of the combustion
‘control means is closed the fut inlet opening is fully open.
In a specific embodiment the shutter of tke combustion
‘control means and the shutter of the fuel inlet means are
provided in form of an integral pert
[0021] The fuel inlet opening may also comprise a grid
through which the hydrocarbon liguid i filed into a tank
portion, The grid fictions 10 reduce the likelihood of
formation of air pockets in the hydrocarbon liguid daring
fling and formation of air bubbles when the fel is filled
into the tank portion
[0022] In a specific example the combustion chamber
‘comprises two tank portions between which the combustion
‘zone is positioned. In tis example the combustion zone is
Jocated underneath the opening of the combustion control
‘means. The tank portions are separated from the combustion
‘zone by wall portions that comprise apertures to allow the
fuel to penetrate from the tank portion into the combustion
[0023] The bumer may be seranged forthe combustion of
‘any’ hydrocarbon liguid iaeluding aay type of alcohol. In 3

‘don of elhanol or methylated spirits whieh has the adv
that the combustion is largely enviroamenally friendly
[0024] ‘The present invention provides in a second aspect
‘heater comprising the above-defined burer.
[0025] The present invention provides in thied aspect a
‘beste for combustion ofa hydmearbon liquid the burer
‘comprising
[0026] a combustion chamber having a combustion zone

portion for containing an amount of the hydrocarbon liquid,
the or each tank portion being positioned adjacent the
combustion zane and being arranged to feed the hydrocar-
bon liquid into the combustion zone,
[0027] and fue inet portion having a clos

‘opening of the combustion chamber
[0029] wherein the closure of the fuel inlet opening is
Arranged 30 that filling of the fuel into the or each tank
portion is only possible if the combustion control means
loses atleast a portion of the gas exchange opening of the
‘combustion ebamber
[0030] |The combustion conte! means typically eomprises
‘shutter for controlling the gas exchange through the gas
exchange opening ofthe combustion chamber. The closure
of the fuel inlet opening typically also includes a shutter
“Typically the shuter for controlling gas and the shutter of
the Tue inlet opening are coupled and may also be integrally
ormed,

tembodinien the burner 10 comprises lid portion 12 and a
body portion 14, The lid portion 12 and body portion 14 are
composed of stainless stel. The lid portion 12 has an
‘pening 16 below which the combustion zone 17 of the
bum is locate
[0035] In this embodiment, the combustion zone 17 is
Positioned between two tank portions 13 and 18 of the
‘burner and stainless sel walls 18 and 20 separate the tank
portions 18 and 17 from the combustion zane 17. The walls
18 and 20 have apertures 19 which allow the hydrocarbon
liquid to penetmte fromthe tank portions 1S and 17 ino the
‘combustion zone 17. The tank portions 18 and 17 are filledUS 2006/0134575 Al
With stainless stee! woo! (aot shown) which disteibutes heat

particles such as metal halls. Further the material with which
the tank portions are filled may not necessarily be metalic
but may comprise a noa-metallic material
[0037] _1n this embodiment, the burner 10 is arranged for
the combustion of ethanol or methylated spirits which has
the advantage that the combustion is largely enviroamen-
