Jean D’Ango
Nationality - French
Jean D’Ango was a French ship owner who was born in 1480 and died in
1551. Jean D’Ango provided ships to Francis the first, who was the king of
France at the time, to use against Spain and England. Jean D’Ango took
over his father’s business which was an import and export business. Jean
D’Ango eventually controlled a fleet of 70 ships.
Francois Le Clerc
Nationality - French
Francois Le Clerc – Francois Le Clerc was a French Pirate who was the
nicknamed “Peg Leg” by the Spanish because he had a peg leg after a brutal
injury. Despite his wounds he refused to retire and in 1553 Francois Le
Clerc along with 10 ships pillaged almost every island settlement. They
sacked Santiago de Cuba and left with 80,000 pesos which was worth about
£120,000.
William Hawkins
Nationality - English
William Hawkins – William Hawkins was the father of John Hawkins and
the person who established the triangular trade. This trade involves
forcefully capturing slaves in West Africa and packing them into ships
where they were taking across the Atlantic.
John Hawkins
Nationality - English
John Hawkins – John Hawkins was a naval commander, privateer and the
second son of William Hawkins. He was the first English trader to gain
profit from the triangular trade. He was also known for promoting the
English involvement in the Atlantic slave trade. He is also responsible for
rebuilding ships faster designs for ships to withstand the Spanish armada.
Francis Drake
Nationality – English
Francis Drake is a slave trader and sea captain and one of the survivors of
Hawkins’ last venture. Francis Drake is circumnavigation of the world in a
single expedition which was backed by the queen herself. His famous
expedition caused conflict with the Spanish that was situated at the western
coast of the Americas.
Piet Hein
Nationality – Dutch
Piet Hein was the first and last to capture a treasure fleet belonging to
Spain which was travelling from South America to Spain. The amount of
treasure stolen was so large that it almost resulted in the bankruptcy of
Spain.
