BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 10002] Drawing blood and administering. intravenous ‘medication using medical devices including but nt limited to catheters are common medical procedures, but conven- tional methods to perform these procedures have several limitations. First a vein must be found. Conventional meth- ‘ods of locating an appropriate vein or artery include resrict- ing the blood supply to the location ofthe body’so thatthe blood pressure in that area is greater, which results inthe patient's veins becoming more visible, This is often accom- plished by the use of a temporary tourniquet, whieh can result in extreme discomfort tothe patient Even after the Temporary toumiquet is applied and certain veins are ‘exposed, a medical professional may sill not be able to ind ‘an appropriate vein. This problem can oecur more realy in ‘elderly patients and patients with low blood pressure. Thus, ‘there is 2 need fora non-invasive method for locating veins SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION 10003] The presen invention is directed towards a por lable band:eld medica opparats that ses infrared ight detect veins beneath the skin, then illuminating the postion of the veins on the skin surface diretly above the veins using visible light Whea the apparatus is held a distance above the outer surface of the skin, veins appear vastly diferent than the surounding tissue, and veins tht are otherwise undetectable because oftheir depth inthe tse ‘are safely lated and mapped onthe patient's skin. Vein's will be ascessed more realy and with greater confidence and as such, venipunctures will go moze smoothly while ‘vasculature shows up elealy on the skin's surface, making it easy osolect the best vein to collet blood sample rea or administer medications to.
