7 Wonders of the World

The Seven Wonders of the World are basically a group of places which are considered to be of great
importance.These are; Colosseum, Petra, Chicken Itza, Taj Mahal, Great wall of China, Christ the
Redeemer and Machu Picchu. Throughout the history, many lists have been made, these were chose
by Herodotus, embarking the most remarkable man-made constructions in art, imagination and of
ancient civilisations.In this article, you will get important information of these 7 wonders of the
world.
1. Colosseum:
Colosseum is located in Rome,Italy . It is 1,900 years old. It was constructed between
70 to 72 CE ,during Flavian dynasty under the order of Emperor Vespasian (69-79
AD). Construction began in 72 and ended in 80 AD. Building of Colosseum was con-
tinued under his son Titus . It was built as the gift to Roman people.Roman citizens
enjoyed this amazing structure. The Colosseum stands as a symbol of power and bru-
tality of Roman people.The amazing sight, that impressed many hearts was destroyed
by an earthquake on September 9, 1349 .

2. Petra :
Petra is located in Jordan. It was founded by Nabataean, who came from Negev
desert (now a part of Israel). It was constructed in 3rd century BC. It is 2,300 years
old. It is a whole city carved in mountains and is currently home to around 800 tombs.
Reddish sandstone cliffs were used in construction. Petra is also known as Al-Batra
in Arabic.It is also known as Rose City. Petra was destroyed as sea trade routes
emerged after an earthquake in A.D 363 .

3. Chichen Itza :
Chichen Itza is also known as temple of Kukulkan . It was built around 600-750 AD.
It is 15,00 years old. It was founded by ancient Maya and was rebuilt by Itza . It is
made of grey Limestone . This Pyramid have four sides with temple on top. All for
sides have 90 steps.There are approximately 365 steps including the final step to reach
the temple. It is located in state of Yucatan, eastern Mexico. It once was home to
around 30,000 people.

4. Taj Mahal :
Taj Mahal is located in Agra, India. Construction of Taj Mahal started in 1632 and
ended on 1648 AD. It took 22 years to built this beautiful site. It is 392 years old. It
was built by the fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan ( 1592 -1666 ) in the memory of
his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal who died in 1631 . Taj Mahal is known as symbol
of love . It means "Crown of Places" and another name of Taj Mahal is Roza-e-Mu-
navvara . Material which was used in the construction includes red sandstones, mar-
ble and work of precious stones.

5. Great wall of China :


It is located in Huairou district,China. It is also known as changcheng which means "
long wall ". Qin Shi Huang ordered the construction of this great wall. The wall was
continuously built from 3rd century BC to 17 century. Many workers died during the
construction. It is said that it was constructed to protect Chinese empire from foreign
traders. There were many other reasons as well.The length of the wall is 21,196 km .
It is famous for being the greatest wall of the world. It is 2,243 years old.

6. Christ the Redeemer :


Construction of Christ the Redeemer started on April 4,1922 and ended on October
12, 1931 . Construction took 9 years. It was designed by French Paul Landowski
while Brazilian heitor da silwa costa was the engineer. It is made of reinforced con-
crete and soapstone . It is located at the top of Corcovado mountain, Tijuca national
park, rio de Janeiro in Brazil . It is a symbol of Christianity . The statue is largest
deco design ever built in history. It is 30 m (98 ft) high. The arms are 28 m (92 ft)
wide. It is 102 years old.

7. Machu Picchu :
Machu Picchu was built around 1450 AD and was discovered by Hiram Bingham in
July 24, 1911. It is a symbol of Ican Empire. It is present in Cusco Region, Peru. It is
located 7,000 feet above the sea level. Another name of Machu Picchu is Huayna Pic-
chu. The Incas used volcanic rock (andesite) to construct the walls of this amazing
site. It have more than 200 buildings.
