SOLIDARITY

GROUP 2
WHAT IS IT?
Solidarity comes from the Latin word solidus, a unit of
account in ancient Rome. It then merged into French
to become solidaire referring to interdependence, and
then into English, in which its current definition is an
agreement between, and support for, a group, an
individual, an idea.
WHAT IS IT?
Solidarity is a bond of unity or agreement between
people united around common cause. True to its
original meaning, there is the notion of accountability
at its core.
WHAT IS IT?
Solidarity is fundamental to the
Christian view of social and political
organizations, and is the fabric for all
authentic relationships.
Pope St. John Paul II wrote

This principle is frequently stated by Pope Leo

XIII, who uses the term “friendship”
Pope Pius XI refers to it with the equally
meaningful term “social charity”
Pope Paul VI , speaks of a “civilization of
love.”
The practice of solidarity is a necessary
component of our faith.

As Pope Benedict writes, “Love of

neighbor…consists in the very fact that,
in God and with God, I love even the
person whom I do not like or even
know.

RELIGION
● The Christian teaching principle of solidarity is about recognizing
others as our brothers and sisters and actively working for their
good. In our connected humanity, we are invited to build
relationships to understand what life is like for others who are
different from us.

● The principle of solidarity challenges Christians to treat every

neighbor, regardless of race, religion or nationality, as “another
self.” Christ’s compassion is not limited to any particular group or
country. Christians are those who choose to imitate Jesus by
extending God’s love beyond the literal and figurative walls that
divide the one global human family.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is

neither slave nor free, there is no male

and female, for you are all one in Christ
Jesus.”
