presence of the SARS COV-2 virus (COVID-19 virus) in the nasopharynx of and individual. The
surface antigen is approved by the South African Health Products Regulating Authority
(SAHPRA) for the use in diagnosing active COVID-19 cases.

A positive test result indicated a high viral load in the nasopharynx of an individual and will
only be positive between day 2 and day 10 after infection.

A negative result needs to be confirmed by means of a SARS COV-2 PCR test if symptoms
persist, this is due to a low viral load in the nasopharynx of an individual. Other causes of a
false negative is due to technique, expired stock, etc.

Results should be correlated clinically.

All results are reported to the National Health Laboratory System (NHLS).
