Topic: Causes and Effects of Depression

According to the World Health Organization, it’s estimated that 15% of the adult
population will experience depression at some point in their lifetime; along with that, it’s
also figured that up to 60% of people who die by suicide have major depression. Those
statistics really raise our awareness of how depression seriously affects our lives. Many
attempts have been made to find out the causes and effects of this issue. In fact, the
reasons for depression depend a lot on people’s relationships and environment, and this
also causes harmful influences on not only individuals but also the whole society.

Depression can stem from a myriad of factors, with familial discord often acting as a
significant trigger. Family issues such as conflicts, dysfunction, or instability can create
emotional turmoil, eroding one's sense of security and belonging. Similarly, the weight of
peer pressure can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt, particularly during
adolescence when the desire for acceptance is paramount. The constant comparison to
peers and societal standards can lead to a distorted self-image and profound feelings of
isolation. Moreover, a toxic environment, whether at home, school, or work, can
perpetuate a cycle of negativity, undermining mental well-being. Exposure to hostility,
abuse, or chronic stress can gradually wear down resilience, leaving individuals
vulnerable to depressive symptoms. Collectively, these factors intertwine, forming a
complex web that ensnares many individuals in the grip of depression, highlighting the
importance of early intervention and holistic support systems to address these underlying
causes effectively.

Depression can lead to many serious problems for oneself, and even cause negative
effects on society. Long-term depression will cause mental instability, causing several
problems such as impaired ability to manage emotions, impaired ability to concentrate,
and prolonged stress. When many people cannot control their behavior, they tend to self-
harm which leads to a series of physical health problems such as alcoholism, drug
addiction and lifestyle problems. self-indulgence, etc. Some people with depression may
turn to alcohol or substance abuse, which can increase instances of unsafe behavior.
People with depression may avoid talking about their feelings or intentionally hide the
problem; they may find themselves preoccupied with thoughts of death or hurting
themselves rather than thinking positively about themselves. Research shows that the risk
of suicide in people with mental disorders such as depression is 5-8%. This is even
scarier if the negative actions of people with severe depression have a certain impact on
society, their actions will affect a large number of followers, leading to a negative
“domino” trend in social life.

To sum up, a person can get depressed due to family issues, peer pressure and a
toxic environment. As a consequence, the depressed are likely to suffer from unstable
mental health and self-harm acts. On a societal scale, depression can also cause
significant problems to the communities that depressed people belong to. All of the
causes and effects above explain the reasons so many people have depression and why it
is such an alarming reality for the world that we are living in. Anyone can be a victim of
depression even yourself so it is important to show some empathy by just small acts, for
example, keep an eye on people around you, offer people help and do not hesitate to ask
for help if you are the one in the situation.
