Teaching drama in schools

Drama is a form of art not many understand. Since it’s beginnings, in the 5th century, this way of
expressing yourself has been probably the most unique, using a wide variety of techniques that
are difficult to master, therefore, learning them is that much more rewarding.
Teaching drama in schools can be challenging, due to it’s complexity, but with efforts from
teachers and students, it can become a fun, interactive, and maybe even inspiring lesson. One
amazing example of said lesson is my own, personal experience, where alongside my classmates,
we successfully fulfilled the task of recreating scenes from the movie “The dead poets society”.
And if that wasn’t impressive enough, we also had to add a pinch of creativity, to make our
scenes belong to us.
The process of learning drama isn’t a difficult one, if you are taught by the correct person, one
that loves drama dearly, and one that is passionate about teaching.
Starting out, we were presented the basics, a couple of scripts and a bit of history on drama. This
was particularly important to understanding the whole concept, because with this information,
we could now process what drama actually meant, and what it’s purpose is.
Moving on, during class, but also at home, we analyzed a set of plays and scenes, remarking
techniques, body language, and any other key aspects regarding the correct way of playing in a
play.
Finally, it was show time! In groups of 4, we applied all of what we studied and played 7
different scenes, of course after two weeks of practice.
All of this led up to some extraordinarily impressive plays, that were unexpected from a class of
16 year olds. We were all delighted with the way our segments, and even more so, with the
reward of this complex, but interesting lesson.
I strongly suggest that everybody should have this wonderful experience, and I hope that all the
people who get the chance to do drama feel the joy that me and my classmates felt.
