Overview of Wilcom ES 2006 release
Welcome to Wilcom ES 2006. The Wilcom ES products are positioned at the
top of the embroidery design market. Amongst professional embroidery
digitizers, the superiority of Wilcom products is based on the stitch quality
of manufactured designs together with ES Designer’s ease-of-use.
Usability has been the main theme of ES 2006 development. The new
release contains major improvements in the design and layout of the
Graphical User Interface (GUI) which offer big productivity benefits.
Foremost among these is the complete re-design of the Object Properties
dialog as a ‘modeless’ dialog. This means that it stays on the design window
as long as you need it, just like the Color-Object List. There are new
toolbars, such as the Arrange toolbar, which make frequently used
functions easily accessible. For more efficient use of screen ‘real estate’, a
new ‘Toolbar Park’ is provided.
In keeping with the ES 2006 focus on usability, ES Designer brings major
improvements in color control with much more accessible tools. Similarly,
pattern selection of Program Splits and Motifs has been improved in the
revised Object Properties dialog with the implementation of new ‘flyout’
pattern libraries. ES Designer also now provides more precise selection of
object outlines or fill stitches and much greater control over both shaping
and reshaping operations.
Apart from interface and usability improvements, the single most important
productivity feature of ES 2006 is the all-new Embroidery Clipart module.
This is a powerful productivity tool which makes whole designs and design
fragments easily available for re-use.
Embroidery monogram and lettering specialists will appreciate the ES 2006
lettering improvements and innovations. ES 2006 provides major
improvements in lettering operations including the all-new user-refined
alphabets, automatic letter kerning, as well as the new Team Names Matrix.
An improved Borders function makes the task of adding attractive crests to
entire designs much easier.
The ES 2006 release also provides a number of useful specialty features.
The new Stippling method creates interesting fills of run stitching within a
border. The improved Offset Object tool lets you quickly create multiple
outlines from selected objects. With the popularity of sequin designs
increasing, ES Designer now provides a dedicated set of Sequin tools which
allow you to digitize sequin designs for compatible machines. Improvements
have also been made to the Schiffli option to service increased market
interest in this area of embroidery.
The Wilcom 2006 release also brings important new developments in Design
Workflow™, Wilcom’s professional embroidery management system. For a

ES 2006 System requirements 6

Security device
Wilcom ES is controlled by a security device
or ‘dongle’ attached to the computer. The
software will not work properly if the dongle
is unplugged from the computer while
Wilcom ES is open. In the event, the
application may hang or crash and any open
files may be corrupted. Each dongle has a
unique serial number and identity code so
your system can be uniquely recognized.
Security codes enable access to features USB Port Dongle
within the software. You need to be able to
identify your system’s access codes, and enter new codes for upgrades.
When updating or upgrading your software, you re-program your dongle by
entering access codes via the software. See the Quick Start Guide for
details.

Warning The dongle is the most important and valuable part of your
system and should be treated with care. Always store it in a safe place when
it is not in use. Wilcom International Pty Ltd guarantees the dongle against
defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service when
properly installed, for a period of 12 months from the date of delivery. If it
is faulty, it may be exchanged. If it is physically damaged, it can be sent to
Wilcom and a replacement purchased for the cost of the dongle alone.
However, in case of loss or theft, you will need to purchase an entire Wilcom
ES replacement system. For this reason, you should consider insuring your
dongle.
All purchases of Wilcom ES 2006, whether new or updates, are shipped with
a USB type dongle. With the release of Wilcom ES 2006, parallel dongles are
no longer provided. When upgrading your software, you may need to do a
brain transplant from a parallel to USB dongle. See the Quick Start Guide
for details.

Color palette improvements

ES Designer brings major improvements in color control with much more
accessible tools. The main components to this are the color toolbar, the
multi-colorway dialog and the color palette editor. The new
dockable/floatable Color Palette Editor makes thread color selection easy.

Quickly set up color palettes

Use Add Color To Palette (Color toolbar) to add a new color slot to the
palette. This can be edited by means of the Color Palette Editor.
Use Color Palette Editor (Color toolbar) to assign thread colors to slots in the
Color Palette.
Use Compact Palette (Color toolbar) to remove all unused colors from
palette. Unused slots appear gray.

When you create a new design, the design contains a single colorway called
‘Colorway 1’ with 15 default colors, unassigned to any thread chart. The
Color Palette Editor displays the same colors. Use the Active Thread Charts
dialog to select a suitable thread chart. All color definitions are transferred
to the Color Palette Editor. Add extra color slots as required. Enter precise
thread codes in the Find Code field or match them automatically to colors
imported from bitmaps.

Note The Compact Palette tool is disabled for machine formats that use
needle addressing—i.e. that have Color Change set as Needle No in the
Machine Format Values dialog. See Setting color change functions for
details.

Create colorways easily

Use Multi-Colorway Box (Color toolbar) to open or close the modeless

Multi-Colorway Box dialog which allows you add and edit colorways.

Creating, editing and deleting colorways is now much easier with a

combination of the revised Color Palette, Color Palette Editor and the new
Multi-Colorway Box. It is often difficult to imagine your designs stitched out
on different fabric colors and textures, using different combinations of
thread colors. ES Designer now makes this process easier by providing
better colorway management. You can define an unlimited number of
colorways for each design.

Split color blocks

Use Multi-Colorway Box (Color toolbar) to open or close the modeless

Multi-Colorway Box dialog which allows you add and edit colorways.
Use Color Palette Editor (Color toolbar) to assign thread colors to slots in the
Color Palette.
Use Split Palette Color (Color toolbar) to create a new color slot with the
same thread specification as the selected slot.

A color block or ‘element’ corresponds to a color stop in the design. It may

be comprised of a single item—e.g. ‘ropes’—or more—e.g. ‘ropes and birds’.
In one colorway you may want to assign the same thread color to both
items, while in another you may want to assign different colors to each. The
Split Palette Color tool makes this easy—simply create a new color slot
with the same thread specification as the selected slot. This is added to the
palettes of all colorways. Selected objects are assigned to the new palette
position.

Improved sequin digitizing

For some time the European market in particular has
seen sales of machines with new sequin capabilities. In
previous releases, digitizers created their sequin
designs using manual stitches. With the popularity of
sequin designs increasing, ES Designer now provides a
dedicated set of Sequin tools which allow you to digitize
sequin designs for compatible machines. A new Sequin
toolbar replaces the limited functionality of the Sequin
Mode tool which used to be located on the Generate
toolbar.

user-defined palette of sequin shapes for the current design.
Use Sequin Palette Editor (Sequin toolbar) to select sequin shapes from a
sequin library.

Quickly create sequin runs

Create sequin runs along digitized lines, either placing sequins manually or
letting the software generate placement positions according to current
settings. You have the choice of exact spacing—for open shapes—or even
spacing—for closed shapes. You can preset sequin type or change at any
stage. Similarly, you can preset fixing stitches or change them after
digitizing. There is an option to ensure that the stitch before the Drop Sequin
function is placed opposite the feeding direction, as recommended by
machine manufacturers.

Convert sequin artwork to Sequin Run

Use Vectors to Sequins (Sequin toolbar) to create a sequin run from a set of
sequin vector objects selected by intersecting line.

Frequently, artwork for sequin designs is independently created by a

specialist designer and supplied to the embroidery digitizer in vector file
format. The Vectors to Sequins tool is available for just this purpose. A
sequin run is automatically created from a set of vector objects representing
sequins selected by intersecting line. The order the line crosses the sequins
determines the sequin order. Fixing stitches are generated automatically
according to current Sequin Run settings.

Digitize individual sequins

Use Manual Sequin (Sequin toolbar) to digitize individual sequins.

The Manual Sequin input method allows you

individual control over sequin placement and fixing
stitches. Create decorative outlines and patterns
manually using sequins from the selection list. To
add a sequin to the stitching sequence, simply
right-click to drop it onto the design, and secure it
with manual stitches. Manual sequin stitching is a
difficult digitizing skill to master and you need to
plan the stitching sequence carefully in order to
minimize unnecessary stitches. Experiment with
your machine and stitch width and spacing settings
to achieve the desired result.

Note See Digitizing individual sequins for details.

Scale and reshape sequin runs

Use Select Object (Pointer toolbar) to resize objects using sizing handles.

Use Reshape Object (Pointer toolbar) to reshape selected Sequin Run

objects.

Sequin editing often requires individual control over sequin positions.

Change sequin shapes and fixing stitch patterns at any stage. You have
complete control over scaling and reshaping Sequin Run objects. Scale and
reshape sequin run lines, as well as remove or add individual sequins. You
can also manually fine-tune sequin spacings. You can even edit individual
fixing stitches.

New Embroidery Clipart

The new Embroidery Clipart feature is a powerful productivity tool which
makes whole designs and design fragments easily available. It allows
digitizers to recycle commonly used design elements and greatly speeds up
the process of creating new designs. You use the clipart library to
permanently store useful embroidery elements and assign keywords to
them. Summary information such as width and height, number of stitches
and colors is automatically recorded. See Embroidery Clipart for details.

to name, keywords, number of colors, or number of stitches. Once a suitable
design element is located, simply drag-and-drop it as ‘embroidery clipart’
into the current project. Automatically find the nearest match between
selected clipart element colors and the current palette.

Note Used in conjunction with Wilcom Design Workflow™, the clipart library
allows multiple users to share embroidery clipart. Available as a cost-option,
Design Workflow™ is an embroidery design centralization and management
solution for businesses that share embroidery files across a network. It can
serve as a central repository for your designs and design elements making
the task of securing, searching for, and managing your assets much more
reliable.

interesting patterns within a border. It can be applied to any closed object
with a fixed stitch angle.

When creating Stipple objects, you need to preset the stitch values. You can,
however, adjust stitch settings of the generated Run object via the Object
Properties dialog. You can even change run stitch type—e.g. Triple Run,
Stemstitch, Backstitch, etc.

Improved object selection and reshaping

ES Designer now provides more precise selection of object outlines or fill
stitches in closed-curve objects. The new Quick Clone feature lets you
quickly duplicate selected objects. The Reshape Object tool now allows
much greater control over reshaping operations.

ES 2006 Wilcom ES Release Notes 35

Point & click selection

Click Select Object (Pointer toolbar) as necessary, and click the object to
select. (The Select Object tool is generally activated by default.)

The simplest way to select objects is by pointing and clicking with the Select
Object tool—the default. Clicking an object outline now selects the object
regardless of whether another object is on top. Closed unfilled objects, such
as drawing objects with no fill color, can only be selected by clicking outlines.
Where you have a mixture of closed-curve objects, you can select object
outlines or fill stitches. Clicking within an object’s extent box but outside its
outline no longer selects it. With low-density stitching and/or at high zooms,
it is actually possible to click between stitches and not select the object. See
Selecting objects with Select Object for details. Click the Go to Previous
View button in Acrobat to return to these Release Notes.

Clicking fill selects the object Clicking fill behind an object Clicking outline of object

Note ES Designer now allows a degree of ‘selection tolerance’ around

stitches and outlines when selecting, as though the lines were thicker.
Selection tolerance does not apply, however, to color or fabric fills.

Object cloning

Use Select Object (Pointer toolbar) to select and clone objects.

The new Quick Clone feature lets you quickly duplicate selected objects by
right-clicking, dragging and releasing at a new position. For more precise
positioning, hold down the Ctrl key while dragging—movement is thereby
constrained to X or Y axes. See Combining objects and designs for details.

Reshaping improvements

Use Reshape Object (Pointer toolbar) to reshape selected objects, edit stitch
angles, and adjust start/end points.
Use Show Reshape Nodes (Reshape toolbar) to toggle reshape node

Use Show Stitch Angles (Reshape toolbar) to toggle stitch angle display
when using the Reshape Object tool.
Use Show Start/End (Reshape toolbar) to toggle start/end point display
when using the Reshape Object tool.

The Reshape Object tool is an important tool in ES Designer. It now

invokes its own Reshape toolbar which allows you to selectively view
reshape nodes, stitch angles, and entry/exit points. Use the Reshape
Object tool whenever you want to change object shapes by adding,
deleting, or moving reshape nodes on the object outline. Edit stitch angles
as well as entry and exit points in Reshape mode.

Lettering improvements
ES Designer provides major improvements in lettering operations including
the all-new user-refined alphabets, automatic letter kerning, as well as the
new Team Names Matrix. There are also improvements to lettering selection
and reshaping operations, as well as improved lettering underlay. Adding
borders to designs is now much easier too.

User-refined alphabets
Sometimes you find that you want to reshape a letter to improve its
appearance, usually to suit a particular lettering height. ES Designer now
lets you save the letter as an alternative version. In fact you can save
multiple versions of the same letter within the same alphabet. Each version
can have a unique height range. When using the letter in a design, the
height setting will automatically determine which version is used. Thereby
you can permanently record fixes to particular lettering problems and
thereafter automatically apply them.

Automatic letter kerning

The new automatic kerning feature allows you to improve lettering
appearance and legibility by fine-tuning spacings between character pairs.
Typically spacing between certain character pairs appears uneven due to the
optical illusion of having straight lines and curves side-by-side. Automatic
kerning is a user-defined option allowing you to customize kerning for each
alphabet.

Note See Automatic letter kerning for details. Click the Go to Previous
View button in Acrobat to return to these Release Notes.

Team Names Matrix

The new Team Names Matrix feature automatically creates a matrix for all
names in a Team Name object together with their corresponding design. You
can minimize the number of color changes created by the matrix operation
for efficient stitchout. The operation also minimizes the number of jumps. A
Team Name object must be present in the design to activate the feature.

Previous View button in Acrobat to return to these Release Notes.

Underlay for lettering

Note The following feature has not made it into the ES 2006 release. It will
be included in a future release.
Lettering appearance and quality depends a lot on underlay which serves as
a foundation for the cover stitching. As well as stabilizing, underlay also
provides ‘loft’, raising cover stitches and preventing them from sinking into
soft fabrics. It can also prepare a napped fabric by flattening it. Most
lettering objects are best served with a single Center Run or Edge Run
underlay. Edge Run underlays for lettering and branched objects now
provide a Weld option. When activated, underlay is applied to each
character as a whole, rather than segment-by-segment. This means there
should be no overlaps where segments join.

Support for the Barudan FDR-II machine

The ES 2006 release provides support for the new Barudan FDR-II machine
format which is a backward-compatible extension of the older FDR format.
The FDR-II format supports all machine types that Barudan produce but is
associated with the control panel rather than a particular machine. Currently
the BED* machine series uses the new DR controller which supports the
FDR-II format. The new FDR-II format is required by Lockstitch machines
with sequin attachments, Chenille with programmable needle height, and
Chenille-combination machines. Older machines interpret the additional
information in FDR-II format as Stop codes.

BEDRH model—FDR-II
format is also supported
by BEDSH and BEDYH
machines

In ES Designer, the new Barudan FDR-II Chenille Combination machine

format—available with the Chenille Option—supports Lockstitch, Chenille,
and Sequin stitching in the one design. It switches from Lockstitch to
Chenille whenever it encounters a Chain or Moss command, and from
Chenille back to Lockstitch whenever it encounters a Lockstitch Needle
command. The new format can combine up to 15 Lockstitch needles and 6
Chenille ‘loopers’.

ES 2006 Support for the Barudan FDR-II machine 48

Two new machine formats
Two new Barudan FDR-II machine formats are now available—‘Lockstitch’
and ‘Chenille Combination’. Lockstitch format is available in all product
levels while Chenille Combination is only available with the Chenille
cost-option. See Support for the Barudan FDR-II machine for details.

Note ZSK1 format is used with older ZSK machines, generally those older
than 1991 which have no more than 7 needles. ZSK2 is for newer ZSK
machines, those characterized by a single top thread trimmer. The trim is
the most significant differentiating factor between the two types. If the ZSK
machine accepts Transport Code Disks, then ZSK TC Machine Format must
be used.

Known limitations in Wilcom ES 2006

The following are known limitations in ES 2006.

ES 2006 Wilcom ES Release Notes 53

Jagged Edge with Fusion Fill™
When you regenerate stitches for some Fusion Fill™ objects with Jagged
Edge applied to one side, the effect may be reversed and applied to the
opposite side. While this is unexpected behavior, it is not technically a
defect. When a Fusion Fill™ object created in ES 9 is restitched in ES 2006,
it is stitched with a new algorithm that includes improved travel runs. A
consequence of this is that the side that includes the Jagged Edge effect may
swap when converting Complex Fill to Fusion Fill™. Note that this problem
does not occur with all Fusion Fill™ objects.

Sequin Run limitation

You cannot make a motif that includes Sequin Run. This limitation also
applies to lettering objects. The Special > Motif > Make menu item is
disabled if the selection contains a Sequin Run object.

Editing ‘ignored’ functions

The Edit Function dialog does not allow you to change the value of an
‘ignored’ function.

Inbro machine does not stop at a Stop Code

By default, Inbro machines automatically change needles without stopping
on a Stop code. This causes a problem for stops that are not color
changes—e.g. at the frame-out point of an auto-applique object. The Inbro
format does not support needle addressing; like Tajima, it has a single Stop
code for both stops and color changes. However, unlike the Tajima machine,
Inbro will not stop even if the machine operator has set the stop sequence
to have two consecutive stops using the same needle. On the Inbro
Operating Box, you can set a number of stitching parameters—e.g. Jumps
for Trim, Max Speed, etc. One of these parameters is Stop Code ON/OFF. By
default, this is OFF. You must turn it ON for the machine to stop at Stop
codes.

Barudan FDR-II Chenille Combination limitations

The Compact Palette tool on the Color toolbar is always disabled when
using the Barudan FDR-II Chenille Combination machine format. See
also Color palette improvements.
Define Stop Sequence is disabled when opening Barudan FDR-II
Chenille Combination designs.

Size limitation when saving JEF format
Designs with a left/right of center extension greater than 70 mm or
up/down of center extension greater than 100 mm cannot be saved in JEF
format. This is so even when the design is smaller than 140 mm x 200 mm
if the left/right start point is greater than 70 mm or up/down start point
greater than > 100 mm. This is because designs greater than this would not
fit in any of the hoops supported by JEF V1.0. The biggest hoop size is ‘Hoop
B (140x200)’.

Note You should always auto-center the design before saving to JEF format.

ES Schiffli 2006 limitations

The following are known limitations in ES Schiffli 2006.

Default installation folder

If Wilcom ES is installed in the default C:\Program Files folder, some Schiffli
Disk Converter (SDC) functionality does not work—e.g. conversion to RCC.
For optimum use with the Schiffli option, Wilcom ES should be installed in a
folder with a valid DOS 8.3 file path—e.g. C:\Wilcom.

Schiffli Disk Converter security

In ES 2006 the Schiffli Disk Converter (SDC) utility requires the dongle to
be present at all times. Currently, however, the program does not display a
warning message if the dongle is missing or timed out. If the program does
not run for any reason, check the dongle first.

Running 16 bit programs under Windows XP

Some non-Wilcom programs that use a ‘rainbow’ security device may install
this DLL and leave the registry corrupted. All file conversions performed by
the Schiffli Disk Converter (SDC) utility use 16-bit DOS sub-programs. If
you happen to have this registry problem, a message box will appear for
every file you convert. You must click ‘ignore’ to run the conversion.
There is a Microsoft support article ‘16 Bit MS-DOS Subsystem Error
Message’ which provides a workaround to fix the problem on your PC. Refer
to the Microsoft Support Site http://support.microsoft.com/ for further
information. Note, however, that Windows Registry fixes are not
recommended for novice PC users.
