1950’s Summary Paper-

“The Cold War isn’t thawing it is burning with a deadly heat. Communism isn’t sleeping;
it is, as always, plotting, scheming, working, fighting.” Perhaps the most famous quote of the
1950’s, it blatantly summarizes the Cold War, and consequently, the 1950’s. The tension between
the two most influential ideologies of the modern age reached a dangerous peak. In this fight, the
contestants – the USA and the Soviet Union – were determined to prove their superiority. Yet, the
consequences were global. Wars, disputes, and poverty would arise from the blood, sweat, and
tears of the cause.
The ripples of the Cold War were the most resounding in Korea. The skipping stone tore
the tranquility of the country. With the end of World War II, Korea was freed from colonial rule
by Japan. However, it was immediately divided between the two giants – the USA and the Soviet
Union. Korea became the boxing ring of two competitors who wanted to prove to the world their
superiority. And they were willing to do anything to knockout their opponent. In 1950, the first
blow was given by the Communist North Korea. No, it wasn’t a blow, it was a kick to the chin.
South Korea and the USA were completely taken aback by the Communist advance. They kept
retreating until the summer of 1950. Yet, they kept their ground and were able to counter-attack.
The war continued until 1951, with both sides taking heavy losses. Finally, an armistice was
proposed. Yet, the war showed the brutal means by which they were willing to prove their
ideology’s ends.
