What comes to my mind when I think of the question “Am I Saved?

The question suggests I need to examine whether I have been rescued from some
harm or danger and seeks to identify if I am in a safe position.

Rescued from what? Can I rescue myself or do I need help? Why is this self
examination important?

This lesson seeks to explore these questions in an easy to read manner

Everyone who sins is breaking God’s law, for all sin is contrary to the law of
God. – 1 John 3:4 (NLT)
Everyone who keeps living in sin also practices disobedience. In fact, sin is
disobedience. – 1 John 3:4 (ISV)
What is sin?
Have you ever disobeyed God? 1 Cor. 6:9-10,Gal. 5:19-21, Rev. 22:15

Sin is disobeying God

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard...– Rom.
3:23(NLT)
If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.
– 1 John 1:8 (NLT)
For the wages of sin is death... – Rom. 6:23 (NLT)
The person who sins is the one who will die. The child will not be punished for the
parent’s sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child’s sins. Righteous
people will be rewarded for their own righteous behavior, and wicked people will be
punished for their own wickedness. – Ez. 18:20
What are some of the repercussions or effects of sin?
Who is responsible for the action of my sins?
Sin results in separation from God
1 Listen! The LORD’s arm is not too weak to save you, nor is his ear too deaf to hear
you call.
2 It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Because of your sins, he has turned
away and will not listen anymore – Is. 59:1-2(NLT)
1"See, the LORD's hand is not too short to save, nor are his ears too dull to hear.
2Instead, your iniquities have been barriers between you and your God, and your
sins have concealed his face from you so that he won't listen. – Is. 59:1-2(ISV)
Do you want to be separated from God?
How safe can I feel if I have sin in my life?

Sin results in separation from God

And the LORD God made clothing from
animal skins for Adam and his wife.

Genesis 3:21 perhaps records the first death in the Bible, when God made clothes
for Adam and Eve out of animal skin. Presumably, this would have been shocking
and horrifying to the first couple. It was a graphic demonstration of the nature of
their sin. Because they sinned, they now had to be clothed, or covered. That
covering was only accomplished by the shedding of blood, symbolic for their
spiritual death and a sign of things to come.

God made a “covering” for the first couple, to cover over their nakedness. They
were still sinful, but God had given them a covering. Blood was shed because of
their sin. This would become a recurring theme which we’ll see later.

After leaving the garden, mankind could not live up to the standards of God. They
still sinned before God. They needed a covering. Therefore, God instituted a
temporary sacrifice system.
• Animal sacrifice was a deeply symbolic ritual. Blood, representing life, was
to be drained from the animal, reminding worshippers of death.
• The way animals were prepared for different types of offerings was also
deeply symbolic, as in the case of the “scapegoat,” in which one goat was
slaughtered and another released into the wild, metaphorically carrying
away the sin of Israel (Leviticus 16:1-34).
• The sprinkling of blood around the Tabernacle (and later the temple)
represented life cleansing the death of sin, since blood was a symbol of life
(Leviticus 17:11).
• In fact, according to the law of Moses, nearly everything was purified with
blood. For without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness. – Heb.
9:22 (NLT)
The old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of
the good things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices
under that system were repeated again and again, year after year, but they
were never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship.
If they could have provided perfect cleansing, the sacrifices would have
stopped, for the worshipers would have been purified once for all time, and
their feelings of guilt would have disappeared. But instead, those sacrifices
actually reminded them of their sins year after year. For it is not possible for
the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. – Heb. 10:1-4
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who
commits sin is the slave of sin. – John 8:34

18 For you know that God paid a ransom to save you…19 It was the precious
blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. 20 God chose him as your
ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been
revealed for your sake. – 1 Pet.1:19-20

How do you feel to know God was thinking about us before we even messed up?
Do you want to continue being a captive of sin or do you want to be experience the
freedom God is offering?
God offered to save us
When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us
sinners. – Rom. 5:6
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God
who takes away the sin of the world! – John 1:29 (NLT)
For the Son of Man came to save the lost.“ – Matt. 18:11 (ISV)
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of
God: - Eph. 2:8 (KJV)
Are you happy Jesus came into the world? Why?
Are you happy for the gift of God?
God offered to save us
Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you,
which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are
saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have
believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that
Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was
raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, – 1 Cor. 15:1-2

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings
salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. – Rom. 1:16
How does the Gospel -The Good News of Jesus coming to the world help you?
Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to
cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position
of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form,
he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a
cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave
him the name above all other names that at the name of Jesus every knee
should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue
declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. – Phil. 2:6-11
(NLT)
What have you learnt about Jesus and his love in this passage?
Did Jesus deserve to die a criminal’s death?
He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead
to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed. – 1 Pet. 2:24
(NLT)
At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema
sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned
me?” – Matt. 27:46

What did Christ carry to the cross that made him feel the presence of God abandoned
him?
Do you want sin to remain in your life? Why?
If God abandoned his only son because of sin, how does that make you feel about sin in
your life?
That is why I said that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I
AM who I claim to be, you will die in your sins. – John 8:24 (NLT)
“Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also
acknowledge before my Father in heaven. – Matt. 10:32-33 (NLT)
Not at all! And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to
God. – Luke 13:3 (NLT)
3Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see
the Kingdom of God.” …5Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the
Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. – John 3:4&5

Old Life Raised to a
With Christ New Life
36 “So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus,
whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!”
37 Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other
apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”
38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you
will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit…
41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church
that day—about 3,000 in all. – Acts 2:36-38,41
What three things are highlighted in the passage above, that results from one being
baptized?
Old Life Raised to a
With Christ New Life

• 3 Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in
baptism, we joined him in his death? 4 For we died and were buried with
Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the
glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.
• 5 Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to
life as he was. 6 We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ
so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. –
Rom. 6:3-6 (NLT)

When are we joined with Christ?

Do you want to be joined with Christ?
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and
only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but
have eternal life.
