2022 – 2023 UWC CSC FP MATH POLICIES

These are the policies that will be implemented in the UWC CSC Math Department for
the academic year 2022 – 2023. Your teacher will go over them with you in class. Please
make sure you fully understand them, sign at the bottom of the page, and scan and upload
the entire document in ManageBac. Your teacher will create an assignment for this,
which you can upload. Please refer to these policies throughout the year.

STUDENT TRANSFERS
1. Students register for the mathematics class they believe is best for them after
considering important factors such as skills and interests.

2. Students should be responsible for doing their best in their class and seek support if
necessary, but if, for one reason or another, they are convinced that there is a need to
change their mathematics class, they may do so but should accept the following
conditions:

(a) Their transfer should follow the school policy.

(b) They are responsible for catching up with the lessons and meeting the pending
requirements of the class they are transferring to.

(c) Textbooks from their previous classes should be returned to their teacher if they
transfer to another mathematics class.

(d) At their new teacher s discretion, they may have to take tests on previous topics
covered in their new class. These tests would be different from what had been
given to the class before. This may be the case when the students are transferring
after the tests have already been given in a new class and teachers lack enough
summative assessments to determine a term grade.

3. The Academic Office will guide students transfer.

ASSESSMENTS
1. Formative and Summative Assessments

(a) Assessments will consist of Formative Assessments and Summative

Assessments.
- Formative assessments will consist of quizzes, worksheets, investigations,
presentations, group work, small projects, etc.
- Summative assessments consist of unit tests, the year-end test, and projects if
any. All summative assessments will be departmental.

(b) The dates and deadlines for the summative assessments will be posted in
ManageBac at least two weeks (14 days inclusive of weekends) prior to the test
dates or the deadlines. Content assessed on the summative assessment should be
covered at least one week before the assessment date.

(c) Individual teachers should give at least four formative assessments during a
specific semester, for which (the best) four pieces of work are counted as 𝟎% in
calculating the term grades. Formative assessments can be graded for quality
(including accuracy of responses) and/or effort (based on an assessment rubric).

2. Absence and Lateness during the Summative Assessments

(a) An unexcused absence in a test will be graded with a zero.

(b) If the absence is excused, students are required to make up a missed test. They
need to communicate with their subject teachers and take the make-up test within
2 days after they go back to school. Otherwise, they would get a mark of zero for
it. The student should inform the teacher about the excused absence before
attending the class after their absence and schedule the test with their teacher. The
teacher will confirm the excused absence in ManageBac or with the Academic
Office, if necessary.

(c) A student feeling sick just before a test is required to ask for an excused absence
and (b) above applies. If the student begins the test and then feels unwell, the
assessment will be marked with no special consideration.

(d) Late submission of projects will not be tolerated at all. The deadlines for these
assessments will always be at 8:00 pm of the deadline date. A grade of zero
will be awarded for an unexcused late submission.

ACADEMIC STANDARDS

1. Students are expected to make the best of their abilities and exert the necessary effort
to achieve the highest possible grade in their math classes. This is made possible with
the students being personally responsible in their studies with their teachers support.

2. Teachers upload all summative assessment grades in ManageBac within ten working
days, except for the mini projects.

3. Student of Academic Concern (SOAC)

There will be some indicators (non-submission of assignment, late submission of
assignment, behavior issues, a summative assessment grade below 4, etc.) that will
affect the student s performance in their math class. The following procedures will
be followed:

(a) If the subject teacher discovers these indicators, he/she will inform the student,
who will do some reflection identifying problems and difficulties in the class and
take some concrete steps for improvement. At the same time, the subject teacher
will need to write an email to inform HOD and record it down in ISAMS.

3
(b) A one-month observation period will be applied. If the student fails to improve,
then HOD will write an email to the Academic Office, and further action will be
applied based on the school s SOAC rules.

TEXTBOOKS

1. Students are given either the hardcopy textbooks or eBooks from the departmental
office. Students are responsible for taking good care of the books and remembering
the username and password for eBooks.

2. Damaging, losing, or failing to return the textbook incurs charges to students school
deposit. The charges are based on the current costs of the textbooks.

GDC BORROWING

1. Students can borrow a TI-84 GDC from the department based on availability.

2. Damaging, losing, or failing to return the TI-84 GDC incurs charges to students
school deposit. The charges are based on the current costs of the calculator.
