Chapter 10-17 (Buyo)

Chapter Ten: Sophia is taken from Lockless, leaving Hiram behind with a young boy
and an old man in a cell. Despite being meant for profit, the old man is mistreated by the
low whites for entertainment. He shares his heartbreaking story of familial betrayal with
Hiram. After weeks in jail, Hiram is purchased by a cruel man who enjoys abusing his
slaves.

Chapter Eleven: Hiram is forced to participate in a brutal ritual where slaves are
chased by low-born whites. Despite his efforts, Hiram fails to escape and faces
repeated beatings. He realizes he must learn to master his power of "Conduction" to
truly escape and reunite with his mother's memory.

Chapter Twelve: After breaking his ankle, Hiram has a vision of Lockless from his
childhood. He wakes up in Corrine Quinn's home, where she reveals she purchased
him and knows about his Conduction power. She explains her affiliation with the
Underground Railroad and how she tested Hiram's power by throwing him into the pit.

Chapter Thirteen: Hiram joins Corrine and others for dinner, learning about their
work for the Underground Railroad. He begins training to forge documents and wishes
to master Conduction. He learns about another Conduction user named "Moses" and
asks Corrine to see the Underground in action.

Chapter Fourteen: Corrine tasks Hiram with eliminating a traitor named Georgie
Parks. Afterward, Mr. Fields reveals his true identity as Micajah Bland and assigns
Hiram his first mission to help a man named Parnel Johns escape. Hiram is then
assigned to work in Philadelphia as part of the Underground's operations.

Chapter Fifteen: Hiram arrives in Philadelphia and meets Raymond and Otha White,
members of the Underground. He experiences a Conduction episode triggered by a
memory of Lockless. He learns about the law granting freedom to enslaved individuals
brought to Philadelphia.

Chapter Sixteen: Hiram witnesses the Underground's efforts to help enslaved


individuals gain freedom in Philadelphia. He reflects on the meaning of true freedom
and learns about the White family's history of liberation.

Chapter Seventeen: Hiram's Conduction abilities are triggered more frequently by


memories. He is attacked by man-catchers but is rescued by Bland. Emotional and
guilt-ridden, Hiram confides in Bland about Sophia. Hiram learns that the Underground
has known about Sophia's fate and has a plan to rescue her from Lockless.
