Essay: The story of Rosario

The story of Rosario is a truthful case study used by Philippine health


groups to explain the health care system. The setting is
the barrio Tanjong, one of the more than 600 slum colonies of Metro
Manila. Some 8,000 people are living in five hectares of land, next to a
polluted river which submerges many houses in rainy season. In summer
stagnant water gives very offensive bad smell.

Different people have different opinion for the reason of Rosario’s death.
She was born under nourished. She had many complications like
constant diarrhea, respiratory infections, pot-bellied from intestinal
parasites, coughing and measles. Her family couldn’t offer those
expensive drugs in dollars and stopped the treatment which lead to
Rosario’s death in one year and half old. The underlying health
determinants that caused the death of Rosario are:

nutrient diets, sanitation awareness, maternal and child health service,
family planning, prevention and control of local endemic. Universal
health care system makes it easier for Patients to seek treatment,
everyone can use the health services they need without risk of financial
ruin or impoverishment, no matter what their socio-economic situation.
