MEDICOLEGAL POST-MORTEM REPORT

Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College & Hospital, Puducherry.
1. PRELIMINARY DETAILS:

It is alleged that on 03/02/2020, the deceased Mr. Manochan Thomas, while repairing the electric
meter of the pumpset, accidently had contact with the electric wire and then he fell down. He
was shifted to Raghavendra Hospital and the doctors examined him at 04.30 pm and declared as
brought dead.

2. SCHEDULE OF OBSERVATIONS:

EXTERNAL EXAMINATION:

The following apparels were present over the body.


1) A cream colored half sleeved shirt.
2) A saffron colored dhoti.
3) A purple coloured underwear [“SANTRO XING”written on the label on the elastic band]
4) A yellowish brown colored sacred thread with multiple beads and a cross around the
neck.
All the apparels were removed and handed over to the investigating officer.
Removal of the apparels revealed the body to be of an adult male, moderately built and
nourished, dark in complexion, measuring 163 cm in length and weighing 58 kg.
Body was cold and stiff all over [Preserved in mortuary cold chamber]
Post mortem lividity was present over the back and was not fixed.
Reddish brown fluid was present at both the nostrils.
Conjunctivae were congested bilaterally.
Bluish discoloration of all the fingernails was present.
All other external body orifices were intact and unremarkable.
THE FOLLOWING EXTERNAL INJURIES WERE PRESENT OVER THE BODY
1) Thermal burn injuries, oval in shape with shallow crater having pale base and elevated
margins, with a diameter of 1 cm over the front of left palm, near the base of thumb,
situated 7 cm below the wrist. The surrounding part was elevated over an area measuring
3x3x0.5 cm, which was hardened.
2) Thermal burn injuries, oval in shape with shallow crater having pale base, with a
diameter of 0.5 cm over the outer aspect of left middle finger, situated 8 cm below its
base.
3) Two abrasions, brownish in color, hardened and parchmentised, each measuring 1.3 x1.2
cm and 1.7 x1.0 cm, separated by a distance of 0.9 cm, were present over the front of the
chest on the right side, lower injury being 15 cm above the anterior superior iliac spine
and 11.5 cm away from the midline.
THE AFOREMENTIONED INJURIES WERE ANTEMORTEM IN NATURE.
INTERNAL EXAMINATION:

Cranium: Skull and vertebrae, membranes and brain:


Scalp and skull: Intact and unremarkable.
Dura: Intact.
Brain: Weighed 1370 g; Brain was soft, congested and edematous. There was coning of orbital
part of frontal lobe, uncal part of hippocampal gyrus of temporal lobe and cerebellar tonsils
bilaterally.
Multiple petechial hemorrhages were present in the white matter of brain on cut section.
Spine and neck: Intact and unremarkable.
Walls, ribs and cartilage: Intact and unremarkable.
Right pleura – Intact and unremarkable.
Left pleura – Intact and unremarkable.
Larynx and Trachea: Trachea contained yellowish brown colored frothy fluid. Tracheal
mucosa was congested.
Right lung - Weighed 490 g
Left lung - Weighed 335 g
Both lungs- Were congested, oedematous and blood stained frothy fluid oozed out on cut
section.
Pericardium- Intact and unremarkable.
Heart: Weighed 280 g; Hyperemic area measuring 4x3 cm was present over the posterior
surface of the left ventricle, situated 2 cm above the apex. Thickness of the left ventricular wall
was 1.5 cm and thickness of the right ventricular wall was 0.5 cm. Walls were unremarkable.
Valves were competent. All the coronaries were patent.
Aorta: Multiple atheromatous streaks were present over the intima at several places.
Inferior venacava: Intact and unremarkable.
Abdomen and Gastro-intestinal tract:
Walls: Intact and unremarkable
Peritoneum: Intact and unremarkable
Oesophagus: Oesophagus contained scanty amount of yellowish brown colored semi solid
material. Oesophageal mucosa was congested.
Stomach and its contents: Weighed 500 g. Contained 350 ml of yellowish brown colored fluid
with identifiable rice particles and with no abnormal odor. Mucosa was congested.
Pancreas: Intact and unremarkable.
Small intestines and its contents – Intact and unremarkable.
Large intestines and its contents – Intact and unremarkable.
Adrenals: Both the adrenals were hemorrhagic bilaterally.
Liver: Weighed 1390 g; Congested on cut section.
Spleen: Weighed 200 g; Pulpy on cut section.
Genitourinary system:
Right kidney: Weighed 120 g; Congested on cut section.
Left kidney: Weighed 155 g; Congested on cut section.
Bladder – Empty.
Organs of generation: Intact and unremarkable.
Investigations
Cause of death:
DECEASED DIED DUE TO COMPLICATIONS OF ELECTRICAL BURN INJURIES
SUSTAINED CONSISTENT WITH THE HISTORY PROVIDED.
