German 5

Introduction

Welcome to the Reading Lessons for German 5

—and congratulations for getting this far! Your
German is probably feeling pretty natural now, and
maybe you’ve even started thinking in German.
In the Reading Lessons for this Level you’ll be
reading a short story, Der Ritter (The Knight), which
will provide practice in reading and expand your
vocabulary. We challenge you to go as far as you
can without looking at the translation! You’ll be
surprised at how much you already know or can
guess.

Level 5 Reading Lessons begin at audio lesson 11 and

continue to the end of the course. As in earlier levels,
the words you'll see in the Reading Lesson don't
match up with the vocabulary in the corresponding
audio lesson. And remember, the Reading Lessons
require you to read and speak aloud, so please do
not attempt to do them if your eyes are otherwise
engaged, for example while walking or driving.

It’s important that as you first read through each

lesson, you concentrate only on the recognition and
pronunciation of the German. We recommend you
first read the German text without looking at the
translations. Afterwards, you can review the English
meanings separately to help you add new vocab-
ulary.

Reading Lessons can be done along with the audio

lessons, or done entirely after you finish the rest of
the course. Instructions on how to proceed with the
readings are contained in the audio.
