“Where are you coming from?" the inquisitive lady guard asked.

"Future Innovations Movement," a name I had coined unexpectedly.

What sent shivers down my spine was the lady’s next move: dialing the landline to
call the CEO’s secretary. Butterflies fluttered my stomach, but I maintained my
composure. I gazed at my friend JB who was standing beside me; his eyes
screamed, "Bro, we are busted!"

An hour ago, JB and I were on our way to the biggest mining firm in our hometown.
We planned of how we were going to meet the CEO and share our MAGNUM OPUS
ideas with the hope collaborating on a project.

“How are we even going to meet the CEO?” JB inquired.

“Google the CEO’s name; we'll figure it out,” I replied confidently ready to put up
an Oscar’s award winning act.

JB and I were ushered onto this spacious wonder green lawn, the scent of freshly
planted flowers fancied our nostrils. The company and national flag swung up high
dancing to the cool breeze. The atmosphere was like an orchestra, teasing our
senses with rhythm and a satisfying scenery.

"We have an appointment with the CEO," I added. "We met at the mall." The lady
guard unwillingly, granted us passage inside after following the clearance
protocols. I will never forget the lady guard peering suspicious look she gave us. As
we navigated the sparkling white tiled corridors, I breathed a sigh of relief, a mix
of joy and disbelief coloring each step; each one echoed the narrative of our
entrance.

My experience above is metaphor of what I share in this book. The border and
boundary is at the receptionist; the future is me meeting the CEO. Imagine how a
simple thought turned into a massive outcome? Your ideas are only a real deal
when acted upon with courage.

ADVERSITY AS A GIFT

I will never forget the day we got robbed in broad daylight. Even as I write, I
remember joking and telling my friend that this story is worth sharing one day.

One afternoon, while chatting with JB at my place an idea flushed through my

mind: what if we could exchange these loitering scrap metals for money. So as
usual, I engaged JB and he was more than willing to join this mission. We picked
the scrap metals and filled them in a sack. I remember Mum and Dad watching
us fill the sack with the last piece of metal and I bet they wondered what I was up
to this time.

As we embarked on our journey, little did we know that the day was yet to unfold
unexpectedly. As we approached a railway crossing, tired of carrying this heavy
sack, we noticed two thugs approaching our way.

As they drew closer, I remember one of them passionately inhaling a cigarette as

he pumped up his chest like a wrestler making his signature entrance in the ring.
It was as if time went into slow motion, the other guy hit his fist on JB’s shoulder,
and he was Usain Bolt in a split second running for his life. I tried to wrestle with
them before escaping for my safety as well.

We stood at distance, defenseless, paralyzed by shock as we watched our treasure

being carried on the shoulders of undeserving strangers. It was a long walk of
shame back home. What was Dad and Mum going to think about us? So, to cover
it up we bought them talk time and they were grateful. ‘If only they knew how my
day had turned out,’ I wondered in silence to myself.

Dear reader, as I reflect on that incident I drew a life lesson: using an adversity as
a gift. The setback in this story, became my teacher; it made me realize that our
ideas and plans will face uncontrollable factors.

The key principle is having growth mindset. A growth mindset is one that
transforms a setback into an opportunity for growth and resilience. If we are going
to create and innovate anything worthwhile, will we need a growth mindset for
setbacks ahead of us.

I can hear you saying “I experienced worse after all”. Yes, you are right. You have
just encountered an adversity; will you turn it into a gift?

INSPIRATION

From history, the future as unfolded its threads of potential opportunities for
those who dare to dream beyond the constraints of their present circumstances.
As I write, I’m thrilled about the emerging trends that are inspiring the future of
innovation. I wonder how these visionaries nurture an idea like a seed until it
sprouts out into reality.

For example, Tafadzwa Munzwa, is a visionary and pioneer of DawaHealth, a

digital health platform reshaping access to maternal health.

Imagine this: Over 810 mothers die daily from preventable pregnancy and
childbirth related complications with 2/3 of them in developing countries of Sub-
Sahara Africa. In Zambia alone, seven mothers lose their lives every day due to
preventable pregnancy complications.

Consequently, this alarming reality inspired Tafadzwa and his team to create a
platform called DawaMom. It is an Artificial Intelligence powered application
aimed at empowering expectant and nursing mothers to receive maternal health.
Imagine an expectant mother receiving weekly updates about her well-being on
her smartphone; that’s what DawaMom is accomplishing.

Tafadzwa, recalls how clinicians had doubts about digital health solutions.
However, after the Covid Pandemic, clinicians are more receptive and
DawaHealth through DawaMom application is dedicated to equip clinicians with
a point of care technology.

You might be wondering if you have to became an inventor as well. Well, the
bottom line is to create and implement new ideas in the problems and challenges
we face every day.

I would like for you think of inspiration as a seed; that can only sprout out if you
nurture it. So, to the seed add two formulas: knowledge and influence. Knowledge
is to the seed what a bridge of belief is to motorists as they navigate from one point
to another. Influence is to a conducive environment for you to thrive in.

COLLABORATION

As we continue into the heart of innovation, we find that collaboration is like a

beautiful painting, that unites diverse minds into beautiful canvas of progress.

My mentor, Dr. Clinton Kadochi once wrote these words:

“Today, our biggest advantage and competition is not a person but in collaborate
efforts...

Let’s imagine that brilliant Zambian software developer who passionate about
renewable energy. He decides to collaborate with a Swedish engineer to harness
the power of renewable energy. Wouldn’t such a collaboration produce innovative
renewable energy but also inspire how a geographical diversity can foster such a
vibrant mutual exchange.

Ever heard of the Maglev train? Which in my opinion is a great example of global
collaborative efforts. It was created in Japan, perfected in Germany and
implemented in China; this high speed train is a product of collective genius
minds from different countries. A testament that innovation has no borders.

For instance, remember during the COVID pandemic the world came to a
standstill as researchers, scientists and policymakers embarked on a quest to
come up with solutions.

Dear reader, the future of innovation is not about yourself on the island of
loneliness trying impress the world with your creations. The future is about the
sweet satisfying company of other like-minded people pouring into you as you
pour into them.

HARNESSS WINDS OF CHANGE

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,
who have been called according to his purpose."
Romans 8:28

Change is not a disruptive force; it’s the very wind that propels the sails of
progress. This chapter explores how the winds of change impact progress.
Imagine standing at the edge of a sailing ship, feeling the gentle breeze slowly
build up into this powerful wind.

Similarly, Organizations are like ships sailing on the stormy sea, they can either
resist or harness this force. It is those that learn to harness the wind of change
embrace transformative power of innovation.

For example, I recall how we used to play and watch music on CDs using the
DVDs. Nowadays, digital streaming platforms like Spotify and YouTube have
changed the music industry. They simply harnessed the winds of change and they
are leaders in their area of influence today.

Examples:

When Netflix was starting out it was only a DVD rental by mail service, the
company expected the winds of change in the entertainment industry. As
streaming became popular, Netflix swiftly adapted with the business model. Who
would have thought that it would be a powerhouse of global streaming?

In the aftermath of war, veterans often face physical and emotional challenges.
The Wounded Warrior Project emerged from the adversity experienced by
wounded veterans, transforming personal struggles into a collective force for
change. This organization not only provides support and resources but has
become a hub for innovative programs and initiatives that empower veterans to
lead fulfilling lives post-service.

Post-World War II, Japan faced economic devastation. Rather than succumb to
adversity, visionary leaders like Akio Morita of Sony and Soichiro Honda of
Honda Motor Co. turned challenges into opportunities. They revolutionized
manufacturing, embraced quality excellence, and sparked an economic miracle
that catapulted Japan onto the global stage as an industrial powerhouse.

Dear reader, each of those nicely knitted stories is a testament to a transformative

power of change. Change is the wind that will either break us or make us and
bounce back. The latter is when the wind of change births resilience, innovation
and the refusal to give up.

CONCLUSION

It is very important that as an individual you test your ideas. It is also vital that
you use adversity as a gift. Let the challenges you face inspire you to create
something new.

You and I must be willing to work with others on worthy ideas that could sprout
into innovation. Remember, the world is constantly evolving and you have to
leverage that to your advantage.

I hope this book has propelled your curiosity to go beyond borders and deep dive
into future innovations.
