17.a) In the offshore base oil drilling operation , methane gas (CH4 ) was found at the bottom of the sea

at 480O C and pressure of 12.8 atm.

i) Calculate the volume of the gas needed to be transferred to a container in the refinery mill with

(b) Explain how electron are filled in the orbitals of a fluorine atom by using Aufbau principle,
Pauli exclusion principle and Hund’s rule. [5]
(c ) The proton number of copper, Cu is 29.
i) Write the electronic configuration for Cu+ and Cu2+. [1]
ii) Based on the electronic configurations, which is more stable, Cu+ or Cu2+. Explain your
answer. [2]

19 (a)The decomposition of trichloroethanoic acid ( CCI3COOH) into carbon dioxide and


trichloromethane follows a first order mechanism with a half-life of 3 hours at 80 oC.

(i) Write the rate equation for the decomposition of trichloroethanoic acid. [1]
(ii) Calculate the fraction of the trichloroethanoic acid remain acid after 12 hours. [2]

(b) In another reaction, A → B, the initial rate is 1.7x10-4 moldm-3s-1 when the
concentration of A is 0.25 moldm-3.
(i) Calculate the rate of reaction when the concentration of A is 0.75 moldm-3 if the
reaction is second order with respect to [A] [4]

(c ) The following data refers to the reaction between hydrogen gas and nitrogen gas to form
ammonia gas with and without catalyst.

20. (a) State Le Chatelier’s principle. [2]


(b) Sulphur dioxide reacts with oxygen to produce sulphur trioxide which is then used to
manufacture sulphuric acid acid. Below is the equation for the reaction :

2SO2(g) + O2(g) 2SO3(g)

The forward reaction is exothermic.


(i) State the effect on the equilibrium if the temperature increase at constant pressure [1]
(ii) State the effect on the equilibrium if an inert gas is added to the reaction at constant
volume. [1]
(iii) What is the effect on this equilibrium if the volume of the reaction vessel is halved [3]

(c) Ethanoic acid is widely used in many industries. Commercially it is used in the
manufacturing esters, vinegar and many polymeric materials. When a 10.00 cm3 of a solution of
ethanoic acid was titrated with 0.050 mol dm-3 of sodium hydroxide solution, the following readings
were obtained.
