Dear Colleagues,
This is the 2nd Call for Papers for the 7th International Conference on the Roman
Danubian Provinces – Frontier Landscapes along the Danube.
As we have already informed you, this important scientific forum will take place
in Sofia (official opening and Day 1) and in Vidin from 23 to 29 September 2024.
Each presentation should be no longer than 20 minutes, followed by a discussion
panel at the end.
It is our intention to publish papers from the conference, so we kindly ask you to
submit material that can be made freely available for publication.
Considering the busy archaeological season and the point that most research con-
ferences are scheduled in September, we have decided to extend the submission dead-
line for your applications and abstracts.
New submission deadline: 15 May 2024.
This event, like any other conference on the Danubian provinces, is free of regis-
tration fee. You will need only €50 to cover the transport costs from Sofia to Vidin and
back to Sofia and the field trip in the region of Vidin, as this city on the Danube will be
the first host of the DRP meetings that has no airport. This makes it a bit difficult to get
to Vidin from Europe; therefore, the Organizing Committee decided that it would be
better to arrange transport from Sofia to Vidin and back. These minimal travel expens-
es will be paid on arrival in Vidin during the research forum.
The working languages of the conference are:
English, Italian, German and French.
Subject of the Conference
The tentative title of the 7th Conference on the Danubian Provinces of the Roman
Empire is: “Frontier Landscapes along the Danube”
The main idea of the organizers is to respond to the latest developments and re-
search methods in field archaeology. Over the past decades, the excavation, study and
interpretation of a site’s past has always been coupled with a particular research fo-
cusing on a comprehensive study of the entire region, not only on a particular archae-
ological complex.
This is, indeed, the key concept of the conference – to gain insight and awareness
of the past and the processes that have taken place along the Danube frontier of the
Roman Empire, both considering the development of the regions and the settlement
development patterns – a military fort, satellite settlements, the surrounding settle-
ments of the local population, workshops, farms, economy and transport routes.
That is why we also propose four main panel sessions for
the conference:
1. Landscapes along the Danubian frontier of the Roman Empire: relations between
military forts - civilian structures; military forts - local settlements; transport routes;
satellite settlements; the overall model of the military zones of the Roman Empire; the
role of workshops and manufacturing centres, of local industries in the frontier zone -
ceramic and other types of manufacturing centres for household goods, stonemasons’
workshops and quarries, etc.;
2. Religion and religious cults in the landscapes of the Danubian frontier. The ar-
chaeological and epigraphic data from the Danube Limes contain particularly abun-
dant data from religious communities, sanctuaries, and necropolises. The awareness
and interpretation patterns of data from these studies are of interest. Any changes in
the burial practices and rituals are very curious and intriguing;
3. Coin circulation along the Danube Limes - within and beyond the imperial bor-
ders. The dynamics of coin circulation, the connections, contacts and influences it
shows represent a crucial point of research on the frontier zone. Furthermore, they
also provide direct data on the lifestyle and the changes taking place in the barbarian
lands in direct contact with the Limes zone;
4. Data from the latest archaeological excavations, field surveys, various analyses,
interdisciplinary studies and any other researches of the frontier of the Roman Empire
along the Danube.
