( )
a) The sum of the first 14 terms 𝑠14 .

b) Given the geometric sequence 5, − 10, 20, ...calculate the fifth term 𝑎5 ( )

2. The market value of a new car is $240 000. If its value depreciates geometrically by 10% per
year, what will be the estimated market value of the car when it is 12 years old?

3. The fourth term of a geometric progression of ratio 4 is 256. What position (𝑛) does the
number 4096 occupy in the progression?

4. In a culture, the number of bacteria doubles every day. If there are one thousand bacteria on
the first day, how many bacteria will there be after seven days?

5. The creators of a new cooking blog compiled the number of visits to the site during the first nine
weeks of operation. The problem is that they lost almost all the information and only have the
following data:

The number of visits was growing in geometric progression.

During the last week, there were a total of 65610 visits.
If we multiply the number of visits of the third and seventh week, we get 656 100.
a) Fill in the table with the number of weekly visits to the blog

Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5

Week 6 Week 7 Week 8 Week 9

65 610

b) Calculate the total number of visits for the nine weeks of activity.

6. On a billboard, you can read this advertisement: "Invest your savings at 5% simple interest for two
years". If you were to accept this offer and invest $32400, how much money would you earn in those
two years in interest?

7. A painting was bought in a gallery for $950 000. After a few months, the owner put it up for sale for
twice the money he bought it for. The new owner waited three more years to sell it again, for double
the price he bought it for. How much did the painting cost the third owner?

8. There are 1000 𝑔 of a certain radioactive substance, which disintegrate so fast that at the end of
each month there are only 2/3 of what was there at the beginning. How much will be left after eight
months?
