1. Answer the following questions. [7]

i) Why is the south-west monsoon important to India? What problems can it create?

Important for growing rice. Too much rain can cause severe flooding, too little mean crop
failure.

ii) How did the Himalayas form?

Two hundred million years ago the plate with India on it was located in southern hemisphere. It
moved northwards and collied with Asia. The impact caused the rocks buckle upwards to form
a high fold mountain.

iii) What is rural to urban migration movement?


Movement of people from countryside to the cities.

2. Rewrite the following paragraph choosing the right word/number from the pair in each
bracket. [4]

The original site of Mumbai was several small (islands). It is on the (west) coast of

India. Now the estimated population of Mumbai is (20) million. Mumbai is one of the top

(ten) financial centers in the world.

3. Give the meaning of each of the following terms: - [5]


i) Trade: Movement/ sale/ exchange of goods between countries is called as trade.

ii) Imports: Goods bought from other countries/ Goods bought by a country that were produced
in other countries.

iii) Exports: Goods sold to other countries/ Goods; services produced in one country that are
sold to other countries.

iv) Trade surplus: When the cost of a country’s imports is more than the cost of its exports.

v) Trade deficit: When a country spends more money on its imports than it earns from its
exports.

10. What are the two main things that a population pyramid shows?
Why are the population pyramids useful? [4]

Population pyramids are useful because they enable comparisons to be made between
countries and help forecast future trends. It helps countries identify problems and plan for the
future.
