1.Define FAT.[ Nov/Dec 2013]
File Allocation Table is a variation on linked allocation method. A section of disk at
the beginning of each partition is set aside to contain the table. The table has one entry for each
disk block, and is indexed by block number. The FAT is used much as is a linked list. The
directory entry contains the block number of the first block of the file. The table entry indexed
by that block number then contains the block number of the next block in the file. This chain
continues until the last block, which has a special end-of-file value as the table entry. Unused
blocks are indicated by a 0 table value.
26. Name the entries that make up a File Control Block (FCB). [UQ]
o File permissions
o File dates(create, access, write)
o File owner, group , ACL
o File size
o File data blocks
36. What are the advantages of the variation of linked allocation that uses a FAT to
chain together the blocks of a file?[UQ]
The FAT allocation scheme result in significant number of disk head seeks
Double caching requires caching file-system data twice. First, reading file system from the disk
block and storing them in the buffer cache. Second, the contents of the file in the buffer cache
must be copied into the page cache
42.What is sector sparing?
Low-level formatting also sets aside spare sectors not visible to the
operating system. The controller can be told to replace each bad sector
logically with one of the spare sectors. This scheme is known as sector
sparing or forwarding
43.What is swap space? What is its use?
Swap space in Linux is used when the amount of physical memory (RAM) is
full. If the system needs more memory resources and the RAM is full, inactive pages in
memory are moved to the swap space. The main goal of swap space is to provide best
throughput for virtual memory system.
