Basic Electrical Engineering

Elementary concepts of electric circuits: Kirchhoff's laws, constant voltage and current

Idea of Basic electrical circuit: Electrical supply and load and its functioning, division of voltage
and current in a parallel and series circuit – simple problems, units of power and energy, solution
of DC circuit with calculation of energy consumption in an installation.

Circuit parameters: Resistance, Capacitance and inductance. AC circuit with R, L, C. Simple


solution of typical AC circuit with resistance, impedance, power and power factor. Electrical
circuit of an installation: Earthing, lightning protection.

Basic Electronics & Communication Engineering

PN Junction diode: Intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, Principle of operation, V-l


characteristics, principle of working of Zener diode, Photo diode, LED and Solar cell. Bipolar
Junction Transistors: PNP and NPN structures, Principle of operation, input and output
characteristics of common emitter configuration ( npn only ).

Rectifiers and power supplies: Block diagram description of a dc power supply, half wave and
full wave (including bridge) rectifier, capacitor filter, working of simple Zener voltage regulator.
Amplifiers and Oscillators : Circuit diagram and working of common emitter amplifier, Block
diagram of public Address system, concepts of feedback, working principles of oscillators, circuit
diagram & working of RC phase shift oscillator.

Radio communication: principle of AM & FM, frequency bands used for various communication
systems, block diagram of super heterodyne receiver. Satellite communication: concept of
geostationary Satellite system.

Mobile communication: basic principles of cellular communications, concepts of cells,


frequency reuse. Optical communication: block diagram of the optical communication system,
principle of light transmission through fibre, advantages of optical communication systems.
Entertainment Electronics Technology: Basic principles and block diagram of cable TV, CCTV, DTH
system.

Active and passive devices – review only. LED – working, applications, comparison of LED
lighting and CFL lighting. Full wave rectifier – diagram and explanation, 5 V power supply – with
bridge rectifier and 7805. SMPS – block diagram and advantages. Integrated circuits. SMDs –
advantages. Static electricity – precautions in handling electronic circuits.

Switches: ON / OFF, push to ON, push to OFF, push to ON / OFF, SPST, SPDT, DPDT. Working and
application of limit switches, proximity switches, relays.

Microcontrollers: Simple block diagram of 8-bit microcontrollers – application. Mobile
technology: CDMA and GSM. Compare – 2G and 3G technologies.

Inverter & UPS: Block diagram. Compare – inverter and UPS. Online and off-line UPS –

Basics of Computer Science Engineering

Computer organization: Central processing unit, input device, output device, secondary storage
device, machine language, assembly language and high-level language.

Computer programming (in C language): Data types, type conversion, simple and compound
statements, usage of standard library, control structures, functions, arrays, Pointers, structure,

Data base systems: Relational Data base Management System, SQL.

Multimedia: Multimedia hardware, sound cards, CD ROMs, full motion digital video.
