BI ‘The components containing carbonyl group, ie., carbon-oxygen double bond (represented as C=O) are known as carbonyl compounds. Depending upon the atoms or group of atoms attached on either side of the carbonyl group, carboxyl compounds are divided into three classes, i.e. aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids. Aldehydes and Ketones can be reduced to a variety of compounds under different conditions, Aldehydes and Ketones are reduced to primary and secondary alcohols respectively by NaBH,or LiAIH, as well as catalytic hydrogenation. Aldchydes differ from Ketones in their oxidation reactions. Aldchydes are casily oxidized to carboxylic: with different oxidizing agents. Even mild oxidizing agents mainly Totlen’s reagent and Fehling’s solution also oxidize aldehydes. Ketones cannot be oxidised by weak oxidizing agent, Ketones are generally oxidised under vigorous conditions.
