Cuttack city’s silver filigree receives geographical indication tag

 The famous silver filigree (Rupa Tarakasi) of the millennium Cuttack city in Odisha has received the
geographical indication (GI) tag from the Chennai-based Geographical Indications Registry, giving an occasion
for the people of the state to celebrate. Rupa Tarakasi is one of the most exquisite silver crafts. In this work of
craft, silver bricks are transformed into thin fine wires (tara) or foils, from which silver filigree is made with all
designs (kasi). In Odia, ‘Tarakasi’ is a combination of two words — ‘Tara’ (wire) and ‘Kasi’ (design).
During Durga Puja, artisans of Cuttack also create ‘medhas’ (tableaus) with intricate filigree patterns.
A geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific
geographical location or origin (e.g., a town, region, or country). India, as a member of the World Trade
Organization (WTO), enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999
has come into force with effect from 15 September 2003. GIs have been defined under Article 22 (1) of the WTO
Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement as: “Indications which
identify a good as originating in the territory of a member, or a region or a locality in that territory, where a given
quality, reputation or characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographic origin.” The GI tag
ensures that none other than those registered as authorised users (or at least those residing inside the
geographic territory) are allowed to use the popular product name. Darjeeling tea became the first GI tagged
product in India, in 2004–2005. The registration of a geographical indication is valid for a period of 10 years. It
can be renewed from time to time for further period of 10 years each.

She is also a member of the public healthcare initiatives of the Gates Foundation. Murty has established the Murty
Classical Library of India at Harvard University. Sudha Murthy is also known for her novel - ‘Dollar Bahu’ -

The Rajya Sabha, constitutionally the Council of States (informally known as the House of Elders), is the upper
house of the bicameral Parliament of India. As of March 2022 it has a maximum membership of 245, of which
233 are elected by the legislatures of the states and union territories using single transferable votes through
Open Ballot while the President can appoint 12 members for their contributions to art, literature, science, and
social services. The potential seating capacity of the Rajya Sabha is 250 (238 elected, 12 appointed), according to
article 80 of the Indian Constitution. Members sit for staggered terms lasting six years, with about a third of
the 233 designates up for election every two years, in even-numbered years. The Rajya Sabha meets in
continuous sessions, and unlike the Lok Sabha, being the lower house of the Parliament, the Rajya Sabha is not
subjected to dissolution. However, the Rajya Sabha, like the Lok Sabha can be prorogued by the President.

Election Commissioner Arun Goel resigns as Lok Sabha polls approach
 Election Commissioner Arun Goel resigned, days before the expected announcement of the schedule for the
2024 Lok Sabha elections. His tenure was till December 2027. According to a notification by the Law Ministry,
his resignation has been accepted by President Droupadi Murmu with effect from March 9. Mr. Goel’s tenure
was till 2027. With his resignation, the Election Commission has been rendered with just one member —
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar. Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey retired.
The Chief Election Commissioner of India heads the Election Commission of India, a body constitutionally
empowered to conduct free and fair elections to the national and state legislatures and of President and Vice-
President. This power of the Election Commission of India is derived from the Article 324 of the Constitution
of India. Chief Election Commissioner of India is usually a member of the Indian Civil Service and mostly
from the Indian Administrative Service. It is very difficult to remove the authority of the Chief Election
Commissioner once appointed by the president, as two-thirds of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha need to
present and vote against him for disorderly conduct or improper actions. Today, the Election Commission has
been functioning as a multi-member body consisting of three election commissioners. The chief election
commissioner and the two other election commissioners have equal powers and receive equal salary,
allowances and other perquisites, which are similar to those of a judge of the Supreme Court. In case of
difference of opinion amongst the Chief Election Commissioner and/or two other selection commissioners, the
matter is decided by the Commission by majority.

The Ganges river dolphin can only live in freshwater and is essentially blind. They hunt by emitting ultrasonic
sounds, which bounces off of fish and other prey, enabling them to “see” an image in their mind. They are

males and give birth once every two to three years to only one calf. Being a mammal, the Ganges river dolphin cannot
breathe in water and must surface every 30-120 seconds. Because of the sound it produces when breathing, the
animal is popularly referred to as ‘Susu’. They have significant importance because it is a reliable indicator of

RBI, Bank Indonesia sign MoU to promote use of local currencies for cross-border transactions
 The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Bank Indonesia (BI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) in Mumbai for establishing a framework to promote the use of local currencies viz. the Indian
Rupee (INR) and the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) for cross-border transactions. The MoU was signed by the
Governor of Reserve Bank of India Mr. Shaktikanta Das and the Governor of Bank Indonesia Mr. Perry Warjiyo.
This collaboration marks a key milestone in strengthening bilateral cooperation between RBI and BI. In a press
release issued, the RBI said the MoU on establishing a framework for cooperation in the area of cross-border
transactions in local currencies between India and Indonesia, aims to promote the use of INR and IDR bilaterally.
 It said this will eventually contribute to promoting trade between India and Indonesia as well as deepen
financial integration and strengthen the long historical, cultural and economic relations between India and
Indonesia. The RBI said the MoU covers all current account transactions, permissible capital account
transactions and any other economic and financial transactions as agreed upon by both countries.
 It added that this framework would enable exporters and importers to invoice and pay in their respective
domestic currencies, which in turn would enable the development of an INR-IDR foreign exchange market.
The use of local currencies would optimise costs and settlement time for transactions.

Commission. The bank was set up based on the recommendations of the 1926 Royal Commission on Indian
Currency and Finance, also known as the Hilton–Young Commission. In 1969, the Indira Gandhi-headed
government nationalised 14 major commercial banks. Upon Indira Gandhi’s return to power in 1980, a further
six banks were nationalised. The first Governor of the RBI was British banker Osborn Smith and C.D.

Earliest-known ‘dead’ galaxy spotted by Webb telescope
 The James Webb Space Telescope since becoming operational in 2022 has uncovered numerous surprises
about what things were like in the universe’s early stages. We now add one more - observations of a galaxy
that was already “dead” when the universe was only 5% of its current age.
 Scientists said that Webb has spotted a galaxy where star formation had already ceased by roughly 13.1
billion years ago, 700 million years after the Big Bang event that gave rise to the universe. Many dead
galaxies have been detected over the years, but this is the earliest by about 500 million years.
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space telescope developed by NASA with the European Space
Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). The telescope is named after James E. Webb, who was
the administrator of NASA from 1961 to 1968 and played an integral role in the Apollo program. It is intended to
succeed the Hubble Space Telescope as NASA’s flagship mission in astrophysics. JWST was launched on 25
December 2021 on Ariane flight VA256. It is designed to provide improved infrared resolution and sensitivity
over Hubble, and will enable a broad range of investigations across the fields of astronomy and cosmology,
including observations of some of the most distant events and objects in the Universe such as the formation of the
first galaxies, and allowing detailed atmospheric characterization of potentially habitable exoplanets.
