Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) (PM-JAY lit. ’Prime Minister’s People’s
Health Scheme’, Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY lit. ’Persevering India Prime Minister’s People’s Health
Scheme’; also referred to as Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Scheme or NHPS) is a national

care for those needing specialist treatment and tertiary health care for those requiring hospitalization. It was
launched in September 2018 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. That ministry later established
the National Health Authority as an organization to administer the program. It is a centrally sponsored
scheme and is jointly funded by both the union government and the states. By offering services to 50 crore

India announced plans for a new naval base off the country’s south-west coast and close to Maldives, as
tensions are running high between Delhi and the island nation. The Indian Navy said it plans to build a base
called INS Jatayu on Minicoy, the southernmost island in the Lakshadweep archipelago. India’s
Lakshadweep islands lie about 130 kilometres (80 miles) north of the Maldives.
“The base will enhance operational reach and facilitate the Indian Navy’s operational effort towards anti-

Indian government launched the Chakshu portal and under the Sanchar Sathi initiative
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) introduced two initiatives, Chakshu and the Digital
Intelligence Platform (DIP), to combat spam and fraud calls through the Sanchar Saathi portal. Chakshu
(meaning eyes) is accessible at sancharsaathi.gov.in/sfc, facilitating citizens to report suspicious communications.
The portal aims to empower subscribers to report suspected fraud calls and messages, as well as instances of
leaked phone numbers by businesses. The platform allows users to report various types of fraud, including
those related to bank accounts, payment wallets, SIM cards, gas and electricity connections, KYC updates,
impersonation, and sextortion. The primary objective of Chakshu is to enable proactive reporting of suspicious
activities, contributing to the prevention and mitigation of telecom-related fraud and spam calls. Telecom
Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is working on developing an app for the Chakshu platform, further
streamlining the reporting process for users.
The new platforms, ‘Chakshu’ and ‘Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP)’, will integrate with the Sanchar
Saathi portal, enabling prompt sharing of intelligence among various stakeholders. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the
Union IT and Communications Minister, emphasized the effectiveness of digital measures in fighting fraud and
crime. Over the past nine months, these measures have resulted in citizens saving approximately Rs. 1,000 crore
and freezing Rs. 1,008 crore in bank accounts linked to fraudulent transactions. Subscribers can utilize the
Chakshu portal to report incidents of leaked mobile numbers, with appropriate action promised against wrongdoers.
The Chakshu portal, part of the Sanchar Saathi initiative, allows citizens to report suspected fraud
communications aimed at defrauding telecom service users. Examples include fraudulent communication related
to bank accounts, payment wallets, SIM cards, and impersonation as government officials or relatives.

UPI payments now accessible for Indians in Nepal
NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), the international arm of NPCI and Fonepay Payment Service
Ltd, Nepal’s largest payment network, announced that Unified Payment Interface (UPI) for cross-border
transactions between India and Nepal is live now. This will increase the convenience and efficiency in
transaction for tourists traveling to Nepal. Both entities are now fully operational and ready to facilitate QR-code-
based person-to-merchant (P2M) UPI transactions between the two countries.
Nepal has 30% of its tourists as Indians, not taking into account religious tourists from India whose footfall
cannot be accounted due to free visit to religious places and free cross-border movement between the two
neighbours. UPI transactions will aid in the ease of travel for Indian tourists headed to Nepal as well as boost the
economy of Nepal.
In its first phase, this partnership will enable Indian consumers to make instant, secure and convenient UPI
payments across various business stores in Nepal by using UPI-enabled Apps. Merchants acquired by the
participating members of Fonepay Network can seamlessly accept UPI payments from Indian customers. This
digital connection serves to reinforce the deep-rooted people-to-people ties between the neighbouring nations.
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an advanced version of Immediate Payment Service (IMPS)- round–the-
clock funds transfer service to make cashless payments faster, easier and smoother. UPI is a system that powers
multiple bank accounts into a single mobile application (of any participating bank), merging several banking

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) operated systems including National Automated Clearing
House (NACH), Immediate Payment Service (IMPS), Aadhaar enabled Payment System (AePS), Bharat Bill
Payment System (BBPS), RuPay etc. The top UPI apps today include PhonePe, Paytm, Google Pay, Amazon
Pay and BHIM, the latter being the Government offering. As part of an agreement, India’s UPI will be linked to

RBI, Bank Indonesia sign MoU to promote use of local currencies for cross-border transactions
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Bank Indonesia (BI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) in Mumbai for establishing a framework to promote the use of local currencies viz. the Indian
Rupee (INR) and the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) for cross-border transactions. The MoU was signed by the
Governor of Reserve Bank of India Mr. Shaktikanta Das and the Governor of Bank Indonesia Mr. Perry Warjiyo.
This collaboration marks a key milestone in strengthening bilateral cooperation between RBI and BI. In a press
release issued, the RBI said the MoU on establishing a framework for cooperation in the area of cross-border
transactions in local currencies between India and Indonesia, aims to promote the use of INR and IDR bilaterally.
It said this will eventually contribute to promoting trade between India and Indonesia as well as deepen
financial integration and strengthen the long historical, cultural and economic relations between India and
Indonesia. The RBI said the MoU covers all current account transactions, permissible capital account
transactions and any other economic and financial transactions as agreed upon by both countries.
It added that this framework would enable exporters and importers to invoice and pay in their respective
domestic currencies, which in turn would enable the development of an INR-IDR foreign exchange market.
The use of local currencies would optimise costs and settlement time for transactions.
The Reserve Bank of India was founded on 1 April 1935 to respond to economic troubles after the First World
War. RBI was conceptualised as per the guidelines, working style and outlook presented by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar
in his book titled “The Problem of the Rupee – Its origin and its solution” and presented to the Hilton Young
Commission. The bank was set up based on the recommendations of the 1926 Royal Commission on Indian
Currency and Finance, also known as the Hilton–Young Commission. In 1969, the Indira Gandhi-headed
government nationalised 14 major commercial banks. Upon Indira Gandhi’s return to power in 1980, a further
six banks were nationalised. The first Governor of the RBI was British banker Osborn Smith and C.D.
Deshmukh was the first Indian Governor of RBI. Shaktikanta Das is the current Governor of RBI.
