Stud End - The end of a stud that is installed into a threaded hole. Also known as the tap end or set end. 3.2 Nut End - The end ofa stud that a nut is tightened onto. 3.3 Stud-Straight - A continuously threaded bar or a bar threaded from one or both ends. 3.4. Stud-Taperlock - A continuously threaded bar or a bar threaded from both ends. The stud end has a 12.5° taper that, on assembly, wedges into the 12.5° taper formed in an internal thread by the end of a tap. The mating internal threads are tapped to a controlled depth with a standard thread. (Formerly referred to as Type 5.) 3.5. Stud-Interference - A bar that is threaded on both ends. The stud end has interference fit thread that is to be installed into a threaded hole having interference thread. The interference thread fit provides interference fits on pitch diameter of 0.003 to 0.101 mm for 1/4-20 up to 0.003 to 0.151 mm for 1-1/2-12. The nut end has standard threads on which a nut can be tightened. The system to identify stud type is provided in Figure 1 10250 DIMENSIONS - STUD 08 DEC 2010 18 Caterpitar: Confidential Yellow - Reproduction Constitutes an Uncontrolled Document = PAGE 1 OF 13 CATERPILLAR INC. cat’ CORPORATE PRODUCT & PROCESS SPECIFICATION Type # ‘Stud End Interference Thread __| Nut End Thread 1 Coarse. Discontinuity Limits - Workmanship shall meet ISO 6157-1 requirements. 5.2 Body Diameter - For studs that have an unthreaded length, the diameter of the body shall not be less than the specified minimum pitch diameter of the thread. The diameter size limits are provided in Figure 3. Note: Previous to Change 16, only full size body diameters were allowed. Contact A516 Design Control for clarification if there is a question on correct body diameter size. 5.3 Length Tolerance - The length of the stud shall be measured parallel to the axis of the stud from one end to the other end. Tolerances for stud lengths are specified in Figure 2. The nut end thread length is the minimum length of full or complete thread. The tolerance on thread length is plus five threads. The tolerance includes complete and partial threads to the vanish point. 5.4.2. The stud end thread length is to the vanish point of the threads. The tolerance on thread length is minus two threads and includes complete and partial threads to the vanish point. 5.4.3. For studs and that do not have the stud end identified on the drawing, the tolerance on the thread length is plus five threads. The tolerance includes complete and partial threads to the vanish point. Note: Change 16 adopts ISO 225 standard dimensioning for the stud end. Dimensions or thread runout indicated on drawings should be followed. If the stud end shows a transition after the dimension, the tolerance is plus five threads. If cross holes are specified, the angular relationship shall be 90 +10°. Note: A slight, tightly adhering burr is permitted in the cross hole after threading. The hole must accept a plug gauge diameter 0.25 mm less than the minimum hole diameter specified 5.9 Runout Of Body In Relation To Thread - Runout shall be measured in a barrel type gauge that provides a functional check simulating actual assembly conditions. Reference: Tool Design Gauge No. 9001-342871. 5.9.1 Straight Stud and Taperlock Stud Runout 5.9.1.1. Metric studs up to and including M20 must pass through a clearance hole 0.8 mm larger than the nominal thread diameter. The stud threads must then screw freely through a class 6h Go Gauge (ANSIASME 81.16M), mounted at the bottom of and concentric with the clearance hole. After the stud end has engaged the ring gauge completely, the clearance hole shall encase the body to within 12 mm or less of the nut end of the stud. For metric studs over M20, the clearance hole shall be 1.6 mm larger than the nominal stud diameter. 5.9.1.2. Studs with inch thread sizes up to and including 3/4” must pass through a clearance hole 0.79 mm larger than the nominal thread diameter of the stud. The stud end thread must then screw freely through a class 3A GO Gauge (ANSI/ASME B1.2), mounted at the bottom of the concentric with the clearance hole. After the stud has engaged the ring gauge completely, the clearance hole shall encase the stud to within 12.7 mm or less of the nut end of the stud. For studs with inch thread sizes larger than 3/4”, the clearance hole shall be 1.58 mm larger than the nominal thread diameter. 5.9.2 Interference Stud Runout - Use the same method for runout described in Paragraph 5.9.1.2 except the nut end thread of the stud must screw freely through the ring gauge. 6.0 TAPERLOCK TAPER (12.5°) INSPECTION Inspection of the stud end 12.5° taper involves use of a template (like in Figure 7) with an optical comparator at 10X or other suitable magnification. When the projected image of the stud is properly centered within the profile outline of the template, the 12.5° taper angle is acceptable when the high points of the thread crests fall within a tolerance zone bounded by 13.5° and 10.5° angles as shown in Figure 8. The first pitch from the end is excluded from this requirement. Other methods can be used for checking the 12.5° angle. If a disagreement occurs between the methods of checking, the template and comparator method will be used to determine acceptance or rejection. Dimensions for making the templates are in Figure 10. 10250 DIMENSIONS - STUD 08 DEC 2010 18 Caterpitar: Confidential Yellow - Reproduction Constitutes an Uncontrolled Document = PAGE 8 OF 13 CATERPILLAR INC. cat’ CORPORATE PRODUCT & PROCESS SPECIFICATION D MAX 4.546 2 MIN 3546 TOL ZONE FOR LOCATING GAUGE DIA MAJOR DIA 11.968 Aa. 135) GAUGE DIA 11321 CHAMFER ANGLE TOL ZONE CLASS 69 THO Figure 7 - Example Template for M12x1.75 Taperlock Stud Note: The thread crest in the taper area produced by a rolling process will be slightly cupped as compared to the straight surface produced by cutting.
